Tema-based Delhi Public School International (DPSI) has organized the 2017 edition of its Special Christmas Assembly.

The Assembly, which is an annual ritual, is an occasion where all students and pupils of the school are brought together to learn about the significance of the Christmas festivities.

Headmaster of DPSI, David Raj speaking during the Assembly held on the school’s campus on Wednesday, December 13, said the Christmas Assembly has been instituted by DPSI as another way of educating children on subjects like history and geography.

Pupils and students from the various classes were brought together to learn about Christmas; a Christian celebration which marks the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to him, “This day, we call it a Special Assembly; basically, we have named it as our Christmas Assembly where we bring the significance of these words: Carols, Christmas, and all those things and how important they are.

“And then we encourage children class-wise to sing some carols, just to create a general awareness of different celebrations and functions that we have,” he added.

Mr. Raj explained that “so we try to bring out the importance of this particular day and there are many more things we do in our school to create awareness among the children. Like today, when we talk to them, they know what is a Carol, what they mean by Christmas’ Eve, what Christmas celebration is all about and that’s all.

“The children learn a lot of things through the Assembly and it is one way of educating them about history and geography,” the Headmaster stated.

After a busy month in which shoppers and revelers were dazzled with fun games, musical shows and heavy discounts, Achimota Retail Centre has announced it is closing the year with a string of enchanting entertainment gigs while it continues to offer customers rock-bottom seasonal shopping deals.

During the past one month, patrons of Achimota Mall have been blessed with a series of loyalty promotions and exciting fun games in a rare shopping ambience spiced up by one rousing entertainment show after the other.

Mall management announced today that Achimota is stepping up the tempo with an intriguing line up of shows and concerts, some of which will call big stars and celebrities like MzVee, KiDi and Kuame Eugene into action.

On Friday December 22, Achimota mall will be the venue for the highly fancied ‘Sky Girls Concert’ – a star-studded musical concert targeting teen girls of 13 years and above and structured to empower especially young ladies from Senior High Schools.

‘Sky Girls is an anti-tobacco initiative championed by Good Business UK and is a project fully funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This concert is more like an end-of-year party for teenaged girls. Besides the musical performances, the bill includes variety fun activities and refreshment for the audience,’ Mr. Anthony Asamoah, Achimota Retail Centre’s Marketing Manager told to reporters.

However, it does appear that Achimota mall’s most highly anticipated attraction, ahead of Christmas, is the ‘Heritage Fashion Show’ slated for December 23.
The Heritage Fashion show is the brainchild of Javon Effects Limited and has been put together to inspire mass appeal and appreciation among Ghanaians for local Ghanaian fashion as reflected in Ghanaian fabrics, creative designs, accessories and craft.

Said Mr. Asamoah: ‘This fashion show is unlike any other you might have seen elsewhere. The runway will showcase the most ingenious application and adaptation of our local prints, craft and traditional fashion accessories in a way that would win over every fashion aficionado.’

The marketing manager said the show will feature as many as seven models who will do up creations by six celebrated fashion designers in an electrifying ambience invoked by performances from Dancehall artiste Tsooboi, Josh Black, Nii Ashaley, and the acoustic maestro, Ebo Yankful.

He disclosed that the main highlight of entertainment at Achimota Mall on Christmas day itself will be the ‘Aseda Fest’ – a marathon musical concert of praise and thanksgiving to God for his kindness and faithfulness throughout the year. About eight gospel music performers, including Beckie Ray, John Edem, Celestine Donkor and Akesse Brempong, are billed to mount the stage.

He said the ‘Aseda Fest’ Concert is a fundraiser in which spot offering and gifts from the show would be donated to the Reverend John Special School in Winneba and other deprived communities.

Apart from the over 14, 200 police officers that will be on the alert to ensure law and order over the Christmas holidays, the Director of Operations of the Police Service, COP George Akuffo- Dampare, has noted eight key changes Ghanaians can expect from his outfit.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PysR9SqjpYMRpvei4roXLpiU9ysLYd7E”]”We know as a people that during this period, there is heightened activity from the movement which accompanies socio-economic activity that brings people from all walks of life to and from cities and towns across the country,” COP Dampare said on the Citi Breakfast Show.

“When you put all this together, it calls for increased policing in a way to take care of this heavy human and vehicular traffic across the country, and to do that calls for the mustering of all the resources that we have at our disposal to bring comfort to the good people of the country.”

The police are thus engaging in the following proactive measures:

  • Traffic management policing – Beyond the MTTD personnel on the roads, there are operational police personnel in major points of all the major cities nationwide to ensure the regular flow of vehicular and human traffic.
  • Escalating highway patrols – The police are ensuring highway patrols to protect commuters between rural and urban areas travel safely.
  • Policing of commercial and entertainment centres – Ensuring uniformed and undercover police presence in major leisure spots to prevent crime.
  • Residential area policing – Strengthening policing both in the day and night time within residential areas.
  • Anti-land guard policing – Ensuring landowners have their peace of mind.
  • Vital installation policing – Policing utilities to ensure activities of citizens are not disrupted.
  • Criminal hideout policing – Acting on police intel to keep watch on known criminal hideouts.
  • Community engagement – Ensuring the support and cooperation of the public through dialogue with communities and making use of social media reach.

At least 14, 200 police officers will be across the country to enforce law and order during this festive season.

Director General of Operations, COP Dr. George Dampare at a media briefing on Thursday, said some 18,000 officers will continue to perform traditional policing duties to ensure an incident-free festive season.

“We are deploying over 14,200 personnel across the country directly, and specifically for the Christmas and New Year operational duties. At the National operational level, we are putting across 1,200 from the National Operational department, the Counter-terrorism unit, the SWAT unit, RDF, FPU, special protection unit and another specialized unit of the service to go across the country and support all the regional commands and ensure that we bring sanity to our communities,” he said.

“In addition to the 14,200, additional 18,000 police officers across the country will be performing traditional policing functions which are indirectly related to this festive period duties,” he added.

Reports from the police service indicate that the Christmas season sees an increase in crime especially due to the many public outdoor events.

This makes it imperative for heightened police presence and operation, especially during the period.

But COP Dampare believes the police is adequately prepared to provide maximum security and guarantee the safety of citizens this Christmas.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Delese Darko, says measures are being put in place to prevent expired goods from getting onto the market ahead of the Christmas festivities.

Fears over the safety of food products on the Ghanaian market have grown in recent weeks after a string of seizure of  unwholesome goods by the FDA.

[contextly_sidebar id=”XORFz0kkAZOtIhQuBTs7cZgdSwCqSJ8U”]The FDA  impounded a container loaded with about 2,800 cartons of chicken at a private warehouse over suspicions that they were unwholesome.

The regulator had earlier destroyed 4,500 cartons of unwholesome canned fish that were said to be on transit to Togo, but had been diverted onto the Ghanaian market.

Hoewver speaking to Citi News following a clean-up exercise organized at the Agbogbloshie Market as part of the FDA’s food safety sensitization program, the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Delese Darko, said her outfit had intensified their checks at the markets and ports, to ensure that expired goods are prevented from flooding the Ghanaian market ahead of the holidays.

“We’re talking to them about not selling expired products. We’re also at the ports, we have port officers who are doing what they can to ensure that things that are coming in are safe,” she said

“Our port officers are on alert, it’s not just now we do it throughout the year, but we intensify post-market surveillance and port operations at this time of the year to make sure that [expired goods] don’t come in. They’ll not bring it December, they’ll bring them in way before then.”

She also advised the public to check the labels of packaged foods before they purchase them in order to avoid consuming expired products.

“We’re also doing public education, we’ve been on the radio with small messages around this period to tell people that they should make sure they look on labels before they buy the goods to ensure that they aren’t expired,” Delese Darko added.

‘Market sanitation paramount’

The FDA also indicated its commitment to ensuring that the best sanitary practices are adhered to in the various markets in Accra.

The Deputy Chief Executive of the FDA in charge of Food Inspectorate Division, Isabella Mansa Agra, said her outfit will meet with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and the representatives of the traders in the next few weeks, to find solutions to the sanitation problems in the capital city’s markets.

Her call comes on the back of agitations from some of the traders who bemoaned the absence of proper sanitation facilities at the markets, despite the fact that they are forced to pay hundreds of cedis in market fees each year.

Also speaking at the clean-up exercise, Mrs. Agra acknowledged the concerns of the traders, and stated that, the health and safety regulator would liaise with the Metropolitan Assembly to address them.

“These are issues we have to discuss with the Assembly and the Environmental office. We have agreed that we’ll have a round-table discussion with the market queens, and we will forge a strategy to see how to resolve these things,” she told Citi News.
