President of the Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi, Professor Sam Afrane, has debunked assertions that granting autonomy to private universities will lead to the proliferation of universities in the country.

Professor Sam Afrane also described the current mentorship system for private universities as cumbersome, indicating that it slows the growth of private institutions in terms of innovation and advancement.

He spoke to Citi News at a matriculation ceremony to admit 414 students to pursue various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the school.

The students comprise 263 males representing 64%, and 151 females also representing 36%.

329 representing 79%, were admitted to pursue Undergraduate programmes, and 85 of them representing 21% to pursue Postgraduate programmes.

Professor Afrane called on government to redesign the functions of the regulatory institutions such as the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and Affiliate institutions to ensure their roles do not overlap.

He indicated that the current system makes it difficult and expensive for private universities since there is duplication of functions between affiliate institutions and the Accreditation Board.

The CSUC President also appealed to Government to properly review the process of making private universities autonomous to enable institutions who qualify to charter and award their own degrees.

He said private universities who are given the chance to charter will still submit themselves to standards and re-assessment by the Accreditation Board and other regulatory bodies.

“Autonomy does not mean freedom forever. We will continue to work with the Accreditation Board and the Ministry of Education. The current mentorship system is so cumbersome and so long, it takes you more than one year to develop a new course. These things, I think must be done away with so that we can move forward in a manner that helps tertiary education development in our country.”

He advised the matriculants to work hard and be determined since the CSUC has committed and dedicated lecturers who will help them to understand the core concepts of programmes they opted to pursue.

He said the institution will soon establish E-Learning Centers in other towns within the country to enroll students who cannot make it for the regular programmes because of their difficult work schedules and destinations.

The Management of the Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi will contribute towards the fight against corruption in Ghana using among other things public lectures to shape society.

The institution is of the firm belief that many Ghanaians are concerned about corruption, and want to see it tacked effectively.

The Akufo-Addo  administration has said it is adopting several measures to boost the fight against corruption.

Government says it has initiated steps including a pledge to pass the Independent Prosecutor Bill, and the Right to Information Bill (RTI), as part of efforts to ensure accountability and transparency, which will ultimately curb corruption.

The President of the CSUC, Professor Sam Afrane, speaking at a press briefing ahead of a Public Lecture on the Corruption menace in Ghana, said the institution will also support the national fight.

The lecture, slated for Friday, October 13, 2017, is on the theme: “Institutional Corruption in Ghana: Causes and Effects”.

It will be delivered by the former moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group, Ken Ashigbey, and will be chaired by General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Opuni Frimpong.

Professor Martey will speak on “Institutional Corruption in Ghana: The Realities, Causes and Effects”, while Mr. Ashigbey will focus on “The Efficacy of Anti-corruption measures in Ghana: What is missing and the way Forward.”

Professor Afrane emphasized that fighting corruption in the country must not be left in the hands of Government alone.

He called on the citizenry to make inputs and support the Government to nip corrupt practices in the bud.

Stanbic Bank Ghana has introduced the Stanbic MoneyWallet Multi-Currency Card, the first of its kind in Ghana. The new MasterCard-branded card offers a safer and more convenient alternative to foreign currency notes and allows both customers and non-customers of the Stanbic Bank to load and have access to up to four foreign currencies on a single card.

By using the Stanbic MoneyWallet Multi-Currency Card, travelers can avoid forex and cross currency fluctuation costs and concerns especially when travelling and trading between the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and South Africa.

The card, a product of Stanbic Bank’s collaboration with MasterCard, can be reloaded as often as one desires. It is also enabled for ecommerce transactions, and can be used for Point of Sale (POS) purchases and ATM cash withdrawals at more than 36.9 million locations in over 210 countries where MasterCard is accepted. Cardholders can load the British pound, US dollar, the South African rand and the Euro. The value of foreign exchange is locked in upon purchase, protecting the cardholder against foreign exchange rate swings and attendant loses.

Speaking at the press launch Nana Dwemoh Benneh, Head, Personal and Business Banking Stanbic Bank Ghana said: “We are in the market to provide state of the art solutions for our customers to help improve their lives. The introduction of MoneyWallet is one of the many interventions that we will roll out this year to continually advance the business of customers.

“With Stanbic MoneyWallet it is no longer necessary for our customers to worry about carrying cash during their travels. The global accessibility of this card will ensure that our customers will always have a convenient way of doing their financial transactions with a card in their hands.”

Nii Odartey Lamptey, Manager, Transactional Products explained that everyone, customers and non-customers alike, can get a Stanbic MoneyWallet Multi-Currency Card with ease from any Stanbic Bank branch. “We are keen on encouraging all to use cards a lot more and to use cash a lot less as that serves our customers, our clients and our country better.”  Odartey noted the card is a precursor to a corporate travel card solution and other card offerings due to be rolled out by the end of 2014.

Stanbic MoneyWallet is issued and activated instantly upon purchase and has a five-year life span.  When used for POS payments and e-commerce there are no transactional fees.

Being a smart card, it automatically detects which currency to use depending on the location of the user. It can also decide which currency to use when there is insufficient local currency on the card at any location. In addition, cardholders can stick to their budget by only spending the amount loaded onto the card.

“The Multi-Currency Card represents the future of travel prepaid cards. Not only is it incredibly convenient for frequent travelers and those who cross multiple borders on the same trip, it also provides travelers with a safer and more secure alternative to carrying cash,” said Obi Okwuegbunam, Director: Account Management for MasterCard in West Africa. “In collaboration with Stanbic, the roll out of this innovative solution will help to make our vision of a world beyond cash a reality.”

Users of the Stanbic Money Wallet Multi-Currency Card have access to 24-hour customer service and support no matter which part of the world they may find themselves. In the event of a lost, damaged or stolen card, emergency cash can be sent to the cardholder.

Whether attending a business meeting or a conference, going to the beach or the great outdoors, shopping, or traveling to one destination or to many, the Stanbic MoneyWallet Multi-Currency Card is the smart choice.

One card, four currencies, what could be simpler!

Stanbic Bancassurance will provide cutting edge solutions at affordable cost while ensuring that claims are dealt with promptly.’’

Customers and participants have the ability to pay premiums as and when they have the funds and to transact business where ever you are.  There is also an option of monthly premiums for monthly cover under the auto and home insurances.

‘’The insurance can be arranged through e-mail or a phone call, the customer will only come in to sign, pay the premium and collect documents. Trained consults are always available to provide any information needed and to assist in completion of the proposal forms,’’ he noted.

Mr Dwemoh Benneh furthered stated that the spread in insurance coverage generally correlates with positive economic growth around the globe, but awareness of insurance lags behind those of banking and capital markets in Ghana.

The insurance market in Ghana is just about 1% of GDP while the size of the industry is between 10% and 8.5% in the more advanced markets.
