A set of jargon-busting guides that teach children about their rights on social media sites has been published.

Children’s Commissioner Anne Longfield said Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and YouTube had “not done enough” to clarify their policies.

She simplified the websites’ terms and conditions with privacy law firm Schillings.

But Instagram said the simplified version of its terms contained “a number of inaccuracies”.

The slimmed-down guides are a response to the Commissioner’s Growing Up Digital report, which found that most children do not understand the agreements they sign when they create social media accounts.

All the sites require children to be over 13 to create an account.

Social media terms

“Children have absolutely no idea that they are giving away the right to privacy or the ownership of their data or the material they post online,” said Ms Longfield.

She is urging the UK government to adopt the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, which requires all companies offering digital services used by children in the EU to simplify their terms and conditions by May 2018.

She said “much more needs to be done” by all of the social media giants to “make them more accountable and transparent”.

‘Inaccuracies’

However, Instagram said there were inaccuracies in the simplified version of its policies.

In a statement, it said: “It is wrong to suggest we share young people’s personal information, contact details or content of direct messages with advertisers without their permission. Nor do we share details of who people are messaging with.”

Hands holding a mobile phone with Facebook displayed

The commissioner had criticised Instagram for its 17-page, 5,000-word terms and conditions.

But Robert Lands, from law firm Howard Kennedy, said shortening terms and conditions can often create confusion rather than clarity.

“There are a number of reasons that terms and conditions are quite long,” he told the BBC.

“It’s not to confuse people, it’s the opposite. When you need to explain difficult concepts, sometimes it takes words to do it.”

A Facebook spokeswoman said the company wanted everyone to feel “safe and secure” when using the platform.

“Our resources – such as our parents portal, privacy basics tool and safety centre – are easy to understand and used every day by young people and parents looking for clear and simple advice,” she said.

Snapchat said its terms and conditions and privacy policy were “as clear and free from unnecessary legalese as possible”.

Katie O’Donovan, public policy manager at YouTube, said the company “is always looking for ways to improve” and will continue working with the commissioner to refine its resources.

WhatsApp could not be reached for comment.

Accra Hearts of Oak have confirmed to Citi Sports their intentions of playing in this year’s Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top 4 tournament slated for the 20th of August.

GHALCA boss Alhaji Ali Raji told Citi Sports on Wednesday that the tournament, contested between the four highest-placed clubs from the last league campaign,  would be taking place this year after a two-year absence and Hearts of Oak have revealed their willingness to be part even though the discussions are yet to be fully finalised by the clubs and the organisers.

“We commit ourselves, in principle, to play in the tournament but we know that some rough edges have to be smoothened and we will all be fine with the arrangements. The meeting was a preliminary one and all those gathered were satisfied with what was said.,” said Muheeb Saeed, Hearts of Oak’s Public Relations Officer to Citi Sports on Thursday.

He went on highlight the benefits of the tournament to the club and said the competitive nature of the matches would help new coach Herbert Addo make better judgements on the team.

“It will certainly be of immense help to the team. It will enable the coaches to assess the preparedness of the players for the First Capital Plus Premier League.”

Hearts will know their order of matches when the draw is made at the launch next week but it has been confirmed by GHALCA that the Phobians will use their home ground of the Accra Sports Stadium during the tournament.

Hearts will play against Asante Kotoko, Heart of Lions and AshantiGold in the tournament.

New Hearts of Oak coach Herbert Addo has revealed that the expectations surrounding his new job are so heaby that losses will not be permitted by the fans.

Addo returns to the Phobians for a second spell in charge after leading the team to a league title in 2002 but he admits pressure from the fans will be so much and they will want good results throughout the season.

“I had sleepless nights after I was approached by the Board because the fans kept calling me to remind of what I had done for the club in the past. Their expectations are such that I have to win sixty games out of sixty games. I cannot afford to lose any match here. I have to do better than the two losses I recorded in sixty league matches in my last spell here,”Addo told those present at the unveiling which was done at the premises of Metro TV in Labone, Accra.

After missing out on the league last season, fans have called on the management to bring in players to make the coming season a better experience and Addo, responded to these calls by saying he would need to assess the squad first before deciding on recruiting new players.

“I just started working with the group this week. We had a physical session today (Thurday) with a touch of technical work and I noticed that some of them were below expectation. But it is not time to start changing things. There are some very good players in the team and by the fifth week, I will know who will be in my team and who will not.”

Addo, who is a five-time league winner with Hearts, Kotoko Aduana ad AshGold, will be assisted by Stephen Abugri and former Black Stars goalie Edward Ansah will be the goalkeeper’s trainer. Sabahn Quaye will be deployed as the team manager.

Spokesperson of Accra Hearts of Oak, Muheeb Saaed, has told Citi Sports that the club will soon state its position in relation  to issues that resulted in the interdiction of former managing director of the club Neil Armstrong Mortagbe.

He says the three man committee that was set up by the club’s Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, have concluded their investigations.

Armstrong-Mortagbe who had been in office for close to 10 months was asked  take a back seat due to several allegations leveled against him, including alleged Visa racketeering and embezzlement of some monies meant for club captain Moro Aboubakar.

According to Muheeb, the club have taken time to thoroughly scrutinize the issues and are dealing with a number of minor concerns that have emerged.

“Investigations have been concluded and the report has been sent to the board chairman,i guess there are a few outstanding issue to be cleared and then we will hear pretty soon from the club what has become of the issue concerning Neil Armstrong.

“We will announce this hopefully before the commencement of the upcoming league season,” he said.

The Phobians are also expected to come out with a decision concerning the appointment of a new head coach.

Public Relations Officer of Accra Hearts of Oak Muheeb Saeed has told Citi Sports that the club are likely to name their new head coach by the close of day on Tuesday.

This comes on the back of the club’s refusal to award  former coach Mohammed Polo a contract extension after his deal run out at the end of last season.

Polo, who was appointed November last year, managed to better the team’s fifth place finish in the 2012/2013 season but his efforts were not enough secure him a permanent deal after he had been brought on as interim coach.

According to Saeed, certain key members of the Hearts of Oak board have been tasked with finding a suitable successor to take charge of the team ahead of the new league season.

“What I can confirm is that we have some members of the board who have been commissioned to head hunt for a coach and they are very confident that by middle of the week and even possibly by close of today we should be announcing the new Hearts of Oak Coach,”he said.

He added that the successor to Mohammed Polo must have the pedigree required to lead a team of Hearts of Oak’s stature.

“We certainly are looking for a coach that everyone will agree has got what it takes to coach a top flight club like Accra Hearts of Oak and has a credible record.

Former coach of Ebusua Dwarfs Professor J.K Mintah has been heavily linked with the job in the past few months.

Management of Asante Kotoko are urging the fans of the club to refrain from engaging in violent conduct and any form of misbehaviour that will hinder the progress of the club in their upcoming game against rivals Hearts of Oak.

Some irate fans of the club  who were disgusted by referee  E.R Biney’s handling of proceedings when the team played Hearts of Lions in a First Capital Plus  Premier  league encounter on March 26.

The incident, which occurred at the Baba Yara Stadium, saw fans hurl missiles at the match officials during and after the game. The unruly behaviour attracted an indefinite ban on the use of the venue by the  Executive committee of the Ghana Football Association pending hearing by the FA’s disciplinary committee.
The team have since been slapped with a two match ban by the disciplinary committee which the club has already served which means that they get to play their second leg encounter against old rivals  Hearts of Oak in front of their home fans on June 1.

Being a fixture that holds vivid images and memories  of the repercussions of crowd violence on May 9, 2001, Operations Manager George Kennedy says the ban has had hard hitting effects on  and off the pitch.

“We are playing our next game against Hearts of Oak at Baba Yara so we are just appealing to them not to repeat the conduct that has cost us to play home matches away.

“During the duration of the ban it cost us not less than 5000 Ghana Cedis we have had to move all over the place, it has stretched our financial resources and physically it has created a lot of fatigue in the team which has resulted our three consecutive defeats.

“I am pleading with the supporters of the club to refrain from such acts and rather leave the handling of such issues to club  management in future to enable the proper processes to be implemented in addressing such situations,” he told Citi Sports.

The Porcupine Warriors won the first leg against the Phobians by a lone goal at the Accra Sports Stadium and need a win from their remaining three games to defend their league crown.
