Residents of Gbetsile near Michel camp in the Kpone-Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region, have been advised to regularize their land lease agreements with the Gbetsile Stool Lands Secretariat or have themselves to blame.

The advice was given at a news conference by the Divisional Chief of Gbetsile, Nii Teye Kojo Amanquah Sune I, who warned that his outfit will be forced to take legal action against recalcitrant persons.

“It has come to the attention of the Gbetsile Stool that several people have occupied pieces or parcels of Gbetsile Stool lands without legitimate cause. The Gbetsile Stool therefore entreats all residents of Gbetsile who have built on parcels or portions of Gbetsile Stool lands, but do not have documents from the Stool, to report to the Gbetsile Stool immediately for regularization of their interest in the lands.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”LawyQMy6hlk0AzKDPbPyxxqCyOpSIHOG”]“It must be noted that, any person or group of persons who fail to comply, would have themselves to blame when the Stool institutes a Court action against them, and there is an order for demolition of their buildings,” the Chief said at the press conference.

Dealing with land guards

On activities of land guards, the chief called on the police to intervene to bring peace to the area.

“We call on the police and the National Security to come to our aid and intensify their security patrols around the community in order to protect lives and property, and to also prosecute persons who are found culpable,” he added.

Nii Teye Kojo Amanquah Sune I, Divisional Chief of Gbetsile, also rejected claims that he is not the rightful claimant of the Stool.

According to Nii Sune I, he has been gazetted as the Divisional Chief of the area, adding that he together with the Mankrolo, Nii Teye Kojo I, have all been accepted by the National House of Chiefs.

“Nii Teye Kojo Amankwah Sune I, the Divisional Chief of Gbetsile and Nii Teye Kojo I, Gbetsile Mankralo, were duly nominated, elected, confined, installed and outdoored by the legitimate king makers and Elders of Gbetsile with the consultation of the Elders of Kpone. Their installation and outdooring ceremony was held on 26th June, 2015 at Gbetseli, and they later swore the oath of allegiance to the Kpone Paramount Chief which signifies their approval and acceptance into the Kpone Traditional state.”

“As constitution demands, the Chief and the Mankralo have respectively gone through the due process to be approved and accepted by the National House of Chiefs, and their names have been entered into the National Register of Chief, and thereby gazetted as the Divisional Chief of Gbetsile and Sub- chief (Mankralo) of Gbetsile respectively,” he added.

US President Donald Trump says he could announce a replacement for fired FBI Director James Comey by late next week.

He told reporters it was “possible” he could name someone by Friday, before he leaves for his first foreign trip.

Defence lawyer Alice Fisher was the first candidate interviewed at the justice department, US media report.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and two others are also expected to meet Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein on Saturday.

But about 11 people in all are reportedly being considered for the position, which requires confirmation in the Senate.

President Trump has faced a backlash for sacking Mr Comey, who had been investigating alleged Russian meddling in the US election.

He told reporters travelling with him on Air Force One that he wanted to move quickly to find a new FBI director. He said the candidates were “outstanding people” and “very well known”.

Fox News quoted a government source as saying they were moving “quickly and expeditiously” to find a replacement, adding: “We’re doing our due diligence – we are not going to cut any corners.”

One of those being interviewed is Republican Senator John Cornyn, the second highest-ranking member of the Senate and a former Texas Attorney General.

Mr McCabe was the FBI’s deputy director until he stepped up after the abrupt departure of his boss. He appeared to contradict the White House this week when he described the inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the US election as “a highly significant investigation”.

He also cast doubt on White House claims that Mr Comey had lost the confidence of FBI staff.

Ms Fisher was an assistant attorney general for the justice department’s criminal division. She currently works at a law firm.

The other candidate named in the US press is New York Appeals Court Judge Michael Garcia, a former New York prosecutor.

Meanwhile, President Trump is facing growing questions about whether he secretly recorded his conversations with Mr Comey.

Donald Trump addresses the reasons for the sacking in an NBC interview

In a tweet, Mr Trump appeared to issue a thinly veiled threat to Mr Comey, saying he had “better hope there are no tapes” of their conversations.

The BBC’s Laura Bicker in Washington says Mr Trump was referring to a private White House dinner in January during which the president claims Mr Comey assured him he was not being investigated over alleged links to Russia.

Mr Trump seemed to be suggesting that he would release recordings if Mr Comey gave his own version of events, she adds.

In an interview with Fox News Mr Trump said that he didn’t want to discuss the matter and that all he wanted was for Mr Comey to be honest.

President Trump has previously told NBC News that Mr Comey requested the one-on-one dinner, but the former FBI director reportedly maintains it was the president who invited him.

Mr Comey had said he was “uneasy” before the dinner, according to former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

On Friday, the White House denied reports that President Trump had also asked Mr Comey to pledge loyalty to him.

According to a report in the New York Times, Mr Comey said he would offer the president honesty, but not loyalty.

Mr Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer has rejected the report.

Echoes of Watergate

Mr Trump’s behaviour has provoked fresh comparisons between his administration and that of disgraced President Richard Nixon, who famously recorded conversations, speeding his downfall during the Watergate scandal.

Senior Democrats on the House judiciary and oversight committees wrote to the White House on Friday demanding copies of any recordings.

John Conyers and Elijah Cummings’ letter noted “it is a crime to intimidate or threaten any potential witness with the intent to influence, delay or prevent their official testimony”.

Tour guides at the Kintampo waterfall site were sacked by some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), when the party came into office, the Chief of Kyeremankoma, the town where the deadly Kintampo waterfall disaster occurred, has revealed.

Nana Effah Guarkuro believes the absence of these tour guides might have contributed to the accident, which claimed the lives of about 18 students of both Wenchi Senior High School and University of Energy and Natural Resources.

[contextly_sidebar id=”nsIdLRbmEjFenFVe12p1DxjUCxVClmpY”]Many have since the accident raised questions about safety measures at such tourist sites.

Responding to these concerns on the Citi Breakfast Show, Nana Effah Guarkuro said the site was effectively being managed by some chiefs in the area until some NPP foot soldiers illegally took over.

“It was initially managed by the Chiefs, but after the elections, some members of the NPP claimed that their government is in power and went and took over the place. The case was reported to the Police, the Regional Commander of Police was also here and I reported to him. But nobody has been there since December till this time. NPP foot soldiers have driven out the people who managed the place,” the Chief said.

“When people come, they drive them to different places and told them what to do and what not to do. They have all been driven away. Nobody is there, I was only there with some press men.”

Meanwhile the Minister of Tourism, Catherine Afeku, is expected to visit the site to ascertain the situation.

How the incident occurred

Reports indicate that, the accident occurred at about 4.30pm on Sunday [March 19, 2017], when a huge tree run off the top of the water fall, descending on the dozens of revelers who were swimming beneath the fall.

An eyewitness, Awudu Isahaku who spoke to Citi News said, “There was a heavy wind in the Kintampo area earlier today… So the huge tree fell at the top and descended onto the people who were swimming in the river beneath the fall. It has killed about 16 people. We are down here with chainsaw machines cutting the trees in attempt to save the many others trapped under the water. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and even some traditional leaders are here.”

The Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Annor Adjaye III, has said he was not part of other members of the Nzemamanle Council, who opposed the appointment of Dr. Ben Asante, as the CEO of Ghana National Gas Company Limited.

According to him, the opposition against Dr. Asante’s appointment on tribal lines, is not in the best interest of the country.

paramount-chief-3

Awulae Annor Adjaye III made these comments at Benyin in the Jomoro District of the Western Region, when Dr. Ben Asante paid a courtesy call on him.

Awulae Annor Adjaye III thus declared his support for Dr. Ben Asante, and wished him well in his new appointment. He urged him to consider employing qualified Nzema sons when the opportunity comes, as well as making his administration open to all.

Dr. Asante in his response pledged to work to the satisfaction of all, and to support Nzema youth as part of the corporate social responsibility of Ghana Gas.

Dr. Ben Asante had in sometime last week visited the Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Amehere Kpanyinli III, who also declared his support for his appointment.

For now, it is becoming evident that the earlier opposition declared by the Paramount Chief of the Nsein Traditional Area, Awuale Agyefi Kwame, and Awulae Angamatu Agyan II, Paramount Chief of Bamianko, was not the position of all the seven chiefs on the Nzemamanle Council.

Dr Ben K. D Asante, a Renowned Engineer, was on January 30, appointed as the Caretaker Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas).

His caretaker position means he will act as the CEO of Ghana Gas until a substantive one is approved. In his acting role, he is also not permitted to take decisions that have policy implications.

About Dr Ben K. D Asante

Dr. Ben Asante has over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He was the technical Director of Ghana’s first Gas Infrastructure project and also developed the gas infrastructure master plan for Ghana in 2008.

He has also served as a consultant to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and provided engineering services, project management and technical support for various projects across the world including UAE, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Mexico, Russia, Thailand and USA.

He has worked for major companies including Nova/TransCanada and Enron and Jacobs Engineering.

Dr. Ben Asante is a product of Mfantsipim school and holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering (KNUST, Ghana), and an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada.

He also has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, London /University of Calgary and has taught gas processing and pipeline engineering at Imperial College, UK and KNUST, Ghana.

Even before the Nana Akufo-Addo government begins work on the creation of new regions, an influential Paramount Chief in the Volta Region, is proposing how the demarcation of the region should be done.

According to the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional area, Togbega Gabusu, the proposed creation of a new region out of the Volta Region should begin from Asikuma Junction.

Making a strong case for his proposal, Togbega said “when coming to the Volta Region and you enter from Accra, you will see that when you get to Asikuma you will realize that all regions have been laid out perfectly well. Veering through the right, you will be going to Southern Volta and veering through Asikuma and Peki and the others, will give you another region.”

Asked whether Peki and Hohoe should be in this new region, he said “that is what it should be, for convenience.”

This according to him, will provide a fair division between the North and South.

He said residents in the region will be willing to support this intervention, saying “I have contacted my people in Kpando and others before, and I know they will be most willing to form a region in Akatsi and not only in Hohoe alone…”

Asked whether he will lobby for Hohoe to be the capital of the new region, he said: “It depends; to create a regional capital a lot of things should be taken into account. Accessibility to all the other parts of the region and the country at large. The existence of adequate lands for the construction of the regional offices. Another is the availability of ancillary facilities such as schools, hospital, potable water and so on.”

Akufo Addo’s gov’t likely to create 4 new regions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership, is likely to create at least four new regions out of some existing ones.

This will be a major agenda for the newly created Ministry for Regional Reorganisation and Development, likely to be led by Dan Botwe as the Minister if he’s approved by Parliament.

While introducing his nominee for the new ministry, Nana Akufo-Addo said although the constitution allows for the creation of new regions, the processes are stringent and cumbersome.

“The process of devolution of power will require that we look again at the regional structures of our country all with the aim of trying to promote rapid development of Ghana…But the constitutional requirements for being able to create a region are very stringent and not easy.”

He noted that, the process includes a referendum that requires at least 80% of residents in the affected region to approve of the split.

“…That is the certification that the Electoral Commission has to make and when the 50% come out to vote, 80% of them must approve the demand for the creation of the region. We are now talking about a major exercise of political mobilization to be able to create a region…” Akufo-Addo said.

He noted that, the regions that were to see the split include the Northern Region, Western Region, Volta Region and the Brong-Ahafo Region.

NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo, has been installed the Development Chief of the Afife Traditional area in the Ketu North constituency of the Volta Region.

His stool name is Togbe Dunenyo Dzigbordi the 1st.

Nana Addo in his acceptance speech gave the assurance that he will take his new role very seriously and deliver as expected.

“I want to assure them that I will take my responsibility very seriously and I will do everything to uphold the diginity of this office and I will not let them down in any undertakings that I have to do on their behalf. I want to thank them very much,” he said.

His installation comes hours after some Ghanaian voters believed to be resident in Togo, reportedly set up protest banners ahead of a visit by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, to the Ketu South Constituency of the Volta Region.

The protests appear to be in response to the NPP’s claims that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has plans to bring in Togolese to vote in the 2016 elections.
