Staff of former banks; UT bank and Capital bank will undergo skills assessment requirements to qualify for employment at the GCB bank.

This was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GCB, Raymond Sowah on Tuesday during a press conference.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AFJEvTwCN1RpEhWkiaa5m8ezYB8dp6Vm”]“…We shall conduct a skills assessment as part of integration process we need to know that we can bring everyone onboard or not. This is an expanded institution and as we go through the integration we should know what jobs to close down and what jobs to retain,” he added.

He made the comment on the back of GCB’s force takeover of UT and Capital banks on Monday.

GCB bank was given the opportunity to assume ownership of the two banks because according to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) they have “severe impairment of their capital.”

BoG also revoked the licenses of the two banks while the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) also suspended the listing status of UT Bank.

Citi News understands that the staff of the two banks who are a little over a thousand will be under probation for about six months under GCB before termination of their contracts.

It is believed that following the probation at least a quarter of workers of both banks will be absorbed while the remaining are likely to lose their jobs.

Mr. Sowah at the press conference also explained that the decision to acquire the two banks was not an easy task.

“GCB was the most profitable bank last year. We must be doing something right to have gotten ourselves to that position. Banks go through some cycles, some good some bad. We are aware of the needs of the customer base that we have and I also want to assure you that we did not take the decision to assume the management of these two banks lightly. We recognize that there are certain things that we can learn from them and as well as certain things that they can learn from us. And that is why we will ensure that we integrate with these institutions seamlessly so that they can bring whatever good they have to deal with their customers.”

The GCB CEO also assured that deposits of customers of both banks will not be lost following the takeover.

“We will take this opportunity to assure all depositors of the two erstwhile banks that their deposits are protected. You can go to the branches that you have used from time immemorial and you will be served,” he added.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from Ethiopia will be the next director general of the World Health Organization (WHO).

He will be the first African to head up the UN agency, after winning the most votes from 186 member states.

He replaces Margaret Chan, who will step down from her 10-year post at the end of June.

During her tenure, the WHO’s response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa was criticised for being too slow.

The agency was accused of missing key warning signs about the severity of the outbreak that began in December 2013 and ultimately killed more than 11,000 people.

Addressing the World Health Assembly shortly before the vote, Dr Tedros promised to respond to future emergencies “rapidly and effectively”.

He also promised to stand up for the rights of the poor.

“All roads should lead to universal health coverage. I will not rest until we have met this.”

Who is Dr Tedros?

Age: 52

Family life: Married, with five children and lives in Ethiopia

Previous jobs: Ethiopian minister of health and foreign affairs, chairman of the board of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria

Qualifications: Internationally recognised malaria researcher, with a PhD in community health

His election was not without controversy.

He has recently been accused of covering up three cholera epidemics in Ethiopia, but his supports say this is untrue.

Ethiopian opposition groups are also critical of Dr Tedros. They accuse the government of human rights abuses and believe that Dr Tedros’ candidacy is an attempt to raise the country’s diplomatic profile.

Dr Tedros said his vision as the new director general was of “a world in which everyone can lead health and productive lives, regardless of who they are or where they live”.

He told delegates at the World General Assembly: “I promise I will get up every day, determined to make a difference… I am ready to serve.”

His top five priorities in his new job are:

  • Advancing universal health coverage
  • Ensuring WHO responds rapidly and effectively to disease outbreaks and emergencies
  • Putting the wellbeing of women, children and adolescents at the centre of global health and development
  • Helping nations address the effects of climate change on health
  • Making the agency transparent and accountable

The Group Chief Executive of CDH Financial Holdings Limited, Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, has won the prestigious and coveted Group Chief Executive Officer of the Year Award for 2016, at the 7th Ghana Entrepreneurs and Corporate Executives Awards (GECEA) held in Accra.

The Awards was organised by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana (EFG), with the endorsement of the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Business Development.

The purpose of the Awards was to identify, recognise and award leading entrepreneurs and corporate executives who have demonstrated vision and business excellence in a manner that has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Ghanaian economy and raised the standard and quality of life in Ghana.

The Group CEO of the Year Award was one of the top three awards among 40 awards presented.

It was a befitting, crowning moment for a business leader whose leadership has turned an ailing financial services company in 2004 into a diversified group of companies.

Speaking to journalists after receiving the award, Mr. Adu-Sarkodee attributed the recognition to the grace of God and the power of vision.

“We have a vision that keeps us focused. It’s a vision that transcends time, economic windstorms and business challenges. It keeps us on the track of success, and God is at the centre of that vision,” Mr. Adu-Sarkodee said.

The CDH boss dedicated the award to the management and staff of the CDH Group.

“I dedicate this award to the industrious, dedicated and efficient team I’m working with across the CDH Group. They have resiliently partnered me to move CDH from an intensive care unit in 2004 to a successful group of companies today,” the business leader added.

He also said “…the journey has been long, and we give all the glory to God for prospering the CDH Group in many ways, but we believe our best days are yet to come.”

In the year under review, the able and prudent leadership of Mr. Adu-Sarkodee led to the winning of a number of awards and recognitions by some of the companies in the CDH Group.

For instance, after leading a successful change management and rebranding of the Accra City Hotel, it won three awards in one year: Best 4-Star Hotel in Greater Accra Region (by Ghana Tourism Board), the Best 4-Star Hotel in Ghana (Ghana Hotels Association) and the Gold Star Award in Customer Service.

Currently, the Hotel is the first and only ISO Certified hotel in Ghana, and one of the few in West Africa.

Under his excellent leadership, Ivory Finance Company (now CDH Savings and Loans Limited) was recapitalised and repositioned as a savings and loans company (a 2nd tier financial institution) in Ghana.

CDH Savings and Loans Limited, in 2016, received an award for contributing to the development of the financial services sector at the 9th Ghana Business and Financial Services Excellence Awards in 2016. The savings and loans company has been a consistent member of the prestigious Ghana Club 100.

Still in 2016, the CDH Balanced Fund – managed by CDH Asset Management Limited, was adjudged the top-performing balanced fund in Ghana by a self-reported data by peers in the mutual fund industry.

Several companies including the Phoenix Life Assurance Limited, CDH Engineering Solutions Limited, CDH Balanced Fund Limited, Global Cinemas and Gilead Medical Centre have been established under the leadership of Mr. Adu-Sarkodee.

Through his efficient and effective leadership, all the subsidiaries and associated companies of CDH Group made profits in 2016.

The CDH Group directly employees close to 800 people.

The CDH Group is a truly diversified group of companies with several subsidiaries and associated businesses: CDH Savings and Loans Limited, CDH Asset Management Limited, CDH Securities Limited, CDH Quarry Limited, CDH Commodities Limited and CDH Engineering Solutions Limited.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Prosper Akambong, appears to have abandoned his duty post.

His office has been under lock and key since Tuesday February 21, by a popular vigilante group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Kandahar Boys group.

The group’s action was in protest against the CEO’s alleged mismanagement of the facility. Whiles some paramedical staff of the hospital are upbeat about the incident, others are apprehensive.

[contextly_sidebar id=”qVfrKbs1TOOhb5fL7rMpUCY7tnYx9nwh”]The hospital’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Fareed, told Citi News the action troopers were civil in their conduct. According to him, they did not vandalize any property or attack any staff.

He also disclosed another vigilante group’s intention to picket at the hospital premises at an unknown date. Ahmed Fareed called for maximum restraint and advised those agitated persons to use the right channel to address their grievances.

He said the incident has been reported to the police and the Ministers of Health and Interior.

Kandahar Boys Secretary

The group’s Secretary, Iddris Abdul Hack, explained that the action was to safeguard the hospital. He revealed that some staff of the hospital connived with other NPP youth groups to demonstrate against the CEO, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

He said the group’s action foiled some NPP youth group’s intention to picket at the hospital premises on Wednesday February 22. Iddris Abdul Hack reaffirmed the Kandahar Boys’ commitment to zealously protect the hospital.

He however supported calls for Dr. Akambong’s dismissal as the CEO.

Northern Young Patriots demand

The Northern Young Patriots earlier at a news conference, demanded the immediate dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

The group’s Chairman, Bashiru Baba, insinuated that Dr. Akambong was superintending over corruption, nepotism and abuse of human rights of staff.

He further claimed Dr. Prosper Akambong reduced the major referral health facility to a death trap.

Bashiru Baba called for forensic audit of the hospital’s accounts, and the establishment of a bipartisan committee to investigate the allegations leveled against the CEO and his surrogates.

A group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as the Northern Young Patriots, has demanded the immediate dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

The group’s Chairman, Bashiru Baba at a news conference in Tamale, accused Dr. Akambong of superintending over corruption, nepotism and abuse of human rights of staff.

He also claimed that Dr. Prosper Akambong has reduced the major referral health facility to a death trap.

He cited the hospital’s Deputy Director of Human Resource, Misbaw Mohammed and Acting Director of Pharmacy, Hamid Abdulai, as Dr. Akambong’s surrogates who should be relieved of their positions.

“The CEO, Dr. Prosper Akambong, Misbaw Mohammed and Hamid Abdulai notoriously known as the “Trinity”, are virtually running the day to day activities of the hospital.

Bashiru Baba served notice of the group’s intention to demonstrate against the TTH CEO if the appointing authority does not dismiss him.

“We are giving the CEO and his two colleagues a- week’s ultimatum to step down, failure to do so, we will advise ourselves.”

He pinpointed the freezing of staff salaries, lack of essential medicines and consumables, partisan recruitment of some paramedical staff and award of contracts to Haskay Company Limited owned by the Acting Director of Pharmacy, Hamid Abdulai, as some of the gross misconduct of the hospital authority.

He revealed that, “Patients are asked to purchase very basic items such as hand gloves, syringes and all items needed for their care, which are supposed to be catered for by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).”

“Another interesting occurrence is the maltreatment of persons by the Trinity. It is said that appointment to the hospital has taken a partisan dimension. Qualified persons perceived to be coming from a certain political party are denied appointment. Temporal staff also perceived to be members of that same political lineage are denied permanent status”, he added.

Bashiru Baba called for forensic audit of the hospital’s accounts and the establishment of a bipartisan committee, to investigate the allegations leveled against the CEO and his surrogates.
