The 55th anniversary celebration of the National Investment Bank (NIB) was launched at the Swiss Spirit Alisa Hotel last Monday.

The anniversary LOGO was unveiled by the Special Guest of Honour, Vice President, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,  assisted by the Board Chairman of NIB, Togbe Afede XIV.

Other dignitaries including the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, MDs and CEOs of various organizations, key customers and ex-staff were present to witness the launch.

The anniversary will be under the theme “55 Years of Growing Ghanaian Businesses.”

In his welcome address, Chief Executive Officer of the Bank, Dr. John Kweku Asamoah said the bank has undergone institutional, managerial and financial restructuring and transformation which has made the bank very formidable in the industry.

Board Chair of the Bank, Togbe Afede XIV.

He added that NIB has chalked significant successes since the outdooring of the three (3) year Strategic Plan (2015–2017) which has fast-tracked the growth of the Bank, making it more competitive and meeting customer expectations.

On his part, the Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV paid glowing tribute to former staff, board and management of the Bank saying, NIB would not have been where it is today but for their immense contributions.

Commenting on the Bank of Ghana’s recent directive for Banks to recapitalize to GHC400million by the end of 2018, Togbe Afede XIV assured customers and stakeholders that “efforts are underway to meet this requirement, and it will be met.”

He further said that, the recent Supreme Court’s unanimous decision of 7-0 dismissing a review application filed by the Dominion Corporate Trustees Limited against NIB, “brings finality to an eight-year old case in which Dominion Corporate Trustees Limited was claiming over $120 million in judgement debt from the Bank.

He thanked all stakeholders of the Bank for making the launch of the 55th Anniversary possible.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lauded the bank for the remarkable gains made over the 55-year period, supporting the sustenance and growth of the economy.

He was especially pleased with the Bank’s efforts at keeping with the time as it opens its 55th Branch at Teshie. Dr. Bawumia congratulated the Board, Management and the Legal team of NIB for the recent victory at the Supreme Court saying it was a major milestone “as it threatened the very existence of the Bank.”

He also commended the bank for remaining resolute and growing steadily over the years inspite of the challenging nature of the Ghanaian economy.

He however, expressed hope that the challenges faced by the economy would soon be addressed to bring relief to the financial sector and its customers.

President Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the upcoming 60th-anniversary celebration in March this year, will be modest, saying the country is not in good financial standing to allow for an elaborate ceremony.

The President gave the assurance when he inaugurated a 30-member committee on Thursday, to oversee the country’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.

Ghana will on 6th March 2017, celebrate its Diamond Jubilee after gaining independence from Britain in 1957.

The committee, chaired by Ken Amankwa will supervise all events and planning processes leading to the celebration.

Other members of the committee include Historians, Professor Irene Odotei and Professor JH Nketiah, Senior Lecturer at the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo and a lawyer, Kweku Asirifi.

Ghanaians have been questioning the high number of committee members for the celebration, fearing this could put pressure on the public purse.

Others also believe the event should not be celebrated in order to save the country money for other important national assignments, considering that the new government has promised to strenghten the economy and make life better for all.

But President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the inauguration at the Flagstaff House, gave the strongest assurance that the celebration will be modest.

“I think all of us are in agreement that the financial and economic circumstances of our country are not what we would like it to be. We have to recognize it; we don’t have the money that we ought to have. Therefore our celebration of this milestone should be modest. We should take into account our financial circumstances.”

The President, however, noted that “It [the celebration] should also be elegant and appropriate; it should leave us with a good feeling about ourselves. It’s an occasion that we all come together to celebrate our unity, no matter the diversity of our opinions, origin, belief or religion. We are all members of the Ghana project. These celebrations should enhance that sense of unity among us.”

Ghana at 50 saga

The last time a similar committee was inaugurated was in 2007 by President John Agyekum Kufuor, to organize the celebration of Ghana’s 50th anniversary.
It emerged after the celebration that there was a gross misappropriation of funds by the committee that operated as a secretariat.

Dr. Wereko-Brobbey and Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani, Chairman of the National Planning Committee for Ghana@50 in August 2010, were discharged by an Accra Fast Track High Court of charges of willfully causing financial loss to the State.

They were accused of financial malfeasance and recommended for prosecution by a 3-member committee set up by the then President John Atta-Mills to investigate the celebrations.

They pleaded not guilty and were subsequently discharged by a Court of Appeal on the grounds that the charges leveled against them were instituted in breach of their fundamental human rights.
