A Deputy Executive Secretary of the Microfinance and Small Loan Center (MASLOC), Afia Akoto, who is the third defendant in a GH¢ 8 million defamation lawsuit, has apologized and retracted comments she reechoed accusing Senyo Hosi, CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors of offering a $1 million bribe to the CEO of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) Alfred Obeng.

In a letter dated January 22, 2018, and addressed to Senyo Hosi’s lawyers, Afia Akoto said she admits her comment was without basis and apologized for it.

“I write to sincerely and unreservedly apologize, retract wholly my comments about your client which led to me being 3rd defendant in the above-mentioned defamation lawsuit. .. I admit that even though I did not originate the allegations of wrongdoing, I did re-echoe them on my Facebook wall on the 28th of June 2017 without first verifying what I now accept to be rather unfortunate claims without basis.. I regret the comment, and apologize unreservedly and undertake never to repeat them. I am truly sorry for the damage caused your client,” the letter stated.

At the court hearing on Monday, Madam Afia Akoto signed the terms of settlement which includes the retraction and apology.

She was therefore removed from the case as 3rd defendant, while plaintiff had gone to pray default judgement because Mr. Kennedy Agyapong and Kencity Media had not filed a defence to the case.

But they brought a late defence on Monday morning which was accepted by the court, but was made to pay GH¢1,000 for the late defence.

The case will now proceed with Mr. Agyapong and Kencity Media as 1st and 2nd respondents respectively.

Kennedy Agyapong, who owns Kencity Media, alleged that Senyo Hosi had made a $1 million bribe offer to the CEO of BOST, Alfred Obeng.

The MP said the bribe was to influence Mr. Obeng to reverse the contaminated fuel sale made by BOST to two companies.

Afia Akoto, who was joined to the lawsuit as a 3rd defendant repeated the allegation on her social media platform.

Senyo Hosi, who said the allegation had no basis and was a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation, filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, asking the court to award a GH¢5 million compensation against Kennedy Agyapong, and GH¢3 million against Kencity Media, the platform on which the allegation was made.

He was also seeking a GH¢1 million compensation against Afia Akoto.

The Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) has donated items worth GHC10,000 to support students of the Dzorwulu Special School.

The donation forms part of the CBOD’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities toward the society.

Items donated included a lawn mower, a printer, bags of rice, bags of maize, cooking oil, toiletries, learning materials and many others.

The Chief Executive of the CBOD, Mr Senyo Hosi, donated the items on behalf of the CBOD and indicated that his outfit’s donation followed an earlier request from the school after it (CBOD) had enquired about the immediate needs of the school.

He said the CBOD recognised the immense contribution the special school was playing to meet the development needs of the human resource base of the country.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we are donating the items totalling GHC10,000 to the Dzorwulu Special School as our token contribution to the day to day running of the school,” Mr Hosi noted.

He expressed the hope the items would meet the immediate, short and long term needs of the school.

Gratitude

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, the headmistress of the school, Mrs Veronica Sackey, expressed appreciation to CBOD for its kind gesture.

She said the donation was timely because “school had just reopened and we are to feed the children.”

“We thank the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Distributors for recognizing the children as part of society,” Mrs Sackey stressed and accordingly urged other corporate entities to assist the school.

She said the school trains its current population of 160 students with special needs in bead making, sewing, hairdressing, agriculture and catering.

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) is calling for calm in the ongoing disagreement between the LPG Marketers Association and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) over the proposed cylinder recirculation program.

The LPG Marketing Companies Association of Ghana has accused government of a grand scheme to wipe them out of business.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dlmndSF8bHCGXyszUotjpio66Ph7EIfW”]According to the association, its members have been omitted from the proposed value chain for the cylinder recirculation policy.

A Deputy Energy Minister, Mohammed Amin, meanwhile, chided the Association of LPG Marketers last week, for what he described as an attempt to hold Ghanaians to ransom over the policy.

But speaking to Citi Business News, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi called on all stakeholders to remain calm since every player will get the opportunity to influence the direction of the Cylinder Recirculation policy.

“I encourage all the parties to hold fire. We need to sit down as industry players and solve this issue. The committee is just about starting its work, and all stakeholders would get a privileged opportunity to influence the direction of the policy. In all of this the national interest must be supreme. We all need to participate in the entire process to reach a fair resolution for all parties”.

The President Nana Akufo-Addo ordered the implementation of the Cylinder Re-circulation Model of LPG distribution following public outcry in the wake of the massive explosion at an LPG filling station at Atomic Junction.

That explosion claimed at least seven lives and injured over 100 persons.

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) has complained that illegal fuel imports into Ghana adversely affected the Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) between May and July 2017.

The Chamber which made the observation in its maiden report on the sector explained that such acts created unhealthy competition in the industry and threaten the ability of BDCs to honour their financial obligations to their suppliers and banks.

[contextly_sidebar id=”aOxIKyENkJ1Od57zJKVmGZKlC1avCdP5″]The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) earlier in 2017 disclosed that Ghana was losing about GHc850 million annually in taxes, due to the increased activities of fuel smugglers into and out of the country.

According to the report such conditions including consistent reduction in crude oil prices on the international market made consumers benefit more within the period under review at the expense of the BDCs.

“The months under review saw consumers and OMCs benefit from lower-than-market ex-ref and ex-pump prices. This has been at the expense of BDCs who have had to trade at uneconomic to negative margins.”

The report also noted that “this situation is unsustainable and poses a major risk to the viability of BDCs.”

The Chamber further called on industry regulators to take immediate steps “to mitigate this evolving risk.”
