Most Reverend Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, the Accra Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Church, on Sunday cautioned the youth over their addiction to cell phones, which he said could distract them from their self-development.

He said parents must control how their children use such gadgets to avoid abuse and exposure to unworthy material.

He advised the youth to be self-disciplined when using mobile devices, and endeavor to use them only for profitable activities spiritually or professionally.

He charged the youth to sidestep unworthy materials that would jeopardize their future. Archbishop Palmer-Buckle gave the advice at a Confirmation Service of the St James Catholic Church at Osu in Accra.

“Do not let the cell phone imprison you that is why it is called a cell phone, it puts you into cells, many of you are not aware how much you have become prisoners of this gadget, some of you do not sleep in the night, it is always on and you do not have a good rest,’’ he said.

He said workers were also guilty when it comes to using cell phone abuse, adding; “We go to work and we do not work well and then we are fired. Then we say why is the man firing me? And we incite the TUC and the Unions to go on strike when we know we’ve not been sleeping adequately to enable us to perform better.”

Thirty-nine members of the St James Catholic Church took the Sacrament of Confirmation administered by Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle. Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and the last of four initiation rites for Catholics.

Archbishop Palmer-Buckle admonished Christians to be prayerful and always find time to read and study the Bible, seek the Holy Spirit through fasting and lead humble and dignified lives worthy of emulation.

Pope Francis has delivered another criticism of some members of his own church , suggesting it was better to be an atheist than one of many Catholics who he said lead a hypocritical double life.

In improvised comments in the sermon of his private morning mass in his residence, he said: “It is a scandal to say one thing and do another. That is a double life.

“There are those who say, ‘I am very Catholic, I always go to mass, I belong to this and that association’,” the head of the 1.2 billion-member Roman Catholic church said, according to a Vatican Radio transcript.

He said some of these people should also say “‘my life is not Christian, I don’t pay my employees proper salaries, I exploit people, I do dirty business, I launder money, [I lead] a double life’.”

“There are many Catholics who are like this and they cause scandal,” he said. “How many times have we all heard people say ‘if that person is a Catholic, it is better to be an atheist’.”

Since his election in 2013, Francis has often told Catholics, both priests and lay people, to practise what their religion preaches.

In his often impromptu sermons, he has condemned sexual abuse of children by priests as being tantamount to a “satanic mass”, said Catholics in the mafia excommunicate themselves, and told his own cardinals to not act “as if they were princes”.

Less than two months after his election, he said Christians should see atheists as good people if they do good.

President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Groupe Nduom, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has supported the St. Edward Catholic Church in Jukwa in the Central Region, with an amount of GH¢60,000.

Dr. Nduom, who was the Chairman of the church’s centenary celebration, which was observed on Sunday, November 13, 2016, said the donation was his staff’s corporate social responsibility to the church.

He donated GH¢10,000 towards a fund-raising ceremony, and pledged an additional GH¢50,000 which will be given to the Church on his birthday, February 15, 2017.

[contextly_sidebar id=”npzbm3lskNYBkln5J38Yf80gLcLabtS9″]Dr. Nduom in an address at the ceremony, thanked God for His protection and the victories he has given him.

“God’s grace is protecting this country. The sermon touched on jobs and I am glad I did not miss it. I have faith in doing business that’s why I am interested in creating jobs,” he said.

He announced to the church that the Nduom University situated at Ayensuado in the region, will open in December and begin admissions in January 2016.

Dr. Nduom thanked the Church and its members for their fervent prayers for him and his family. In his sermon, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most. Rev. Matthias Kwabena Nketiah, urged the members to pursue hardwork and diligence.

He entreated them to desist from the usual poor Ghanaian attitude towards work if they want to receive financial blessings from God.

Chief of Assin Kushia, Ehunabobrim Nana Pra Agyensem IV, was the special guest of honour.

The St. Edward Catholic Church, which was established in 1916, is currently putting up a state of the art parish in Jukwa.
