Four men suspected to be members of a gang that snatched a taxi at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region, are currently in the grips of the Winneba Police.

The Police arrested two of the suspects, named Emmanuel Osei and Abdul Razak, aged 22 and 23 respectively, just hours after they stole the taxi with registration number GX 3027-17 from a driver named Prince Amemoo.

Luck eluded the two other suspects who had been on the run until they were arrested by the Kasoa Police today [Tuesday].

The Police say the suspects hired the victim’s taxi from the Winneba Roundabout to Gomoa Potsin, and forced him to drive to the outskirts of the town.

They stated that Emmanuel Osei, who was sitting next to the driver, allegedly threatened him with a machete while his accomplices pushed him out of the car.

They then tied the victim with a rope, and gagged him with a handkerchief before absconding with the taxi.

The police explained that the Accra Central District Police Command received a tip-off that a group of young men were offering a taxi, similar to the stolen one for sale at Agblogbloshie.

Police officers who were deployed to the scene feigned interest in the car and arrested the suspects who confessed to the robbery.

The Accra Central District Police then handed over the suspects to the Winneba Police who placed them in a lineup, where Emmanuel Osei was identified by the complainant as the assailant wielding the machete.

Both the complainant and the suspects were taken to the crime scene for a reconstruction of the crime.

The car is currently in the possession of the police as evidence, while all four suspects will be put before the Winneba Magistrate Court today [Wednesday].

The Acting Corporate Service Executive Director of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng, has admonished owners of vehicles and motorbikes to take advantage of the telecom company’s tracking system, to help them monitor and retrieve their assets in case they are stolen by criminals.

According to him, the stealing of cars and motorbikes can be reduced drastically, if owners will commit resources to protect the assets.

Motorbikes are the most accessible means of transport in the Upper East Region, and the menace of motorcycle snatching in the region is rampant.

Speaking at the MTN editors forum for journalist in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Mr. Koranteng said, the menace of motor snatching in the country can be addressed through MTN’s tracking device.

“We need to protect our vehicles and motorbikes with the tracking system or device, and that will ensure that, in the unlikely event that your motorbike is stolen, you will always be able to retrieve the motorbike wherever it would be in the world.”

“The tracking device is hidden within a vehicle or a motorbike, and wouldn’t be affected by water or the weather, and it allows you to know where one’s motor is at any point in time from your mobile phone or tablet. So when you report your motor or vehicle stolen, the police can easily assist you to retrieve it particularly when you have the tracking device on it,” Mr. Koranteng stated.

He also hinted that, communities in the country without MTN network coverage will be connected soon.

Mr. Koranteng explained that, MTN Ghana is partnering with GIRFEC to use a frequency called the UMTS 900 through the use of solar technology, to extend network services to communities without MTN network.

He said MTN hopes to reach out to 300 communities by end of January 2018.
