Chris Wood came off the bench to inspire Burnley’s second-half fightback which earned a 2-1 win against 10-man Everton at Turf Moor.

Cenk Tosun, signed in January from Besiktas for a reported £27million, finally headed home his first Everton goal after 20 minutes.

Burnley, who had endured a 12-game winless run in all competitions, were level in the 56th minute thanks to Ashley Barnes’ strike and the hosts secured the victory through substitute Wood with ten minutes left.

Everton, who have won just twice in their last 11 Premier League games, saw Ashley Williams sent off late on for elbowing Barnes.

It was a historic victory for the Clarets, who gifted manager Sean Dyche all three points on his 250th game in charge. It also marked the first time Burnley have won a Premier League match after conceding the first goal and took them to the 40-point mark.

For Everton meanwhile, their sixth consecutive away defeat leaves them in tenth place, just seven points above the bottom-three.

Ahead of the game, manager Sam Allardyce had claimed big signing Tosun was struggling to adapt to English football becasue of the weather, and he responded by scoring his first goal for the club on the coldest weekend of the season to put Everton in the lead – nodding after Seamus Coleman flicked on Theo Walcott’s cross.

Jordan Pickford staked his claim as England’s number one to keep Everton in front with three excellent saves in front of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, but he was finally beaten in the second half as Burnely came roaring back after the break

Burnley dominated possession and set about trying to find an equaliser. After Gudmundsson saw a goal-bound shot blocked, Pickford had to be at his best to claw away a header from Barnes.

Walcott was again unable to match good build-up play with a finish as he then poked a shot weakly at Pope.

Everton looked very dangerous in attack but they were having to do a lot of defending and Burnley probably should have equalised in the 40th minute but they could not make the most of an excellent free-kick from the lively Gudmundsson.

Dyche switched to 4-4-2 for the second half, bringing on Wood for his first appearance since sustaining a knee injury in December in place of Jeff Hendrick.

The Clarets immediately went on the offensive but could not find a way past Pickford, who pushed former Everton man Lennon’s shot behind before reacting quickly to keep out Ben Mee’s header from the corner.

The key to beating Pickford turned out to be a precision through ball from the right from Matthew Lowton that took out the entire Everton defence. Pickford chose to stay on his line and Barnes made him pay with a thumping finish.

Allardyce sent on Rooney for Tom Davies but the momentum remained with Burnley and, faced with the same situation after Lowton played in Barnes, Pickford came off his line to block.

Rooney gradually began to exert his influence as Everton started to have more possession and a spell of real dominance ended with Sigurdsson shooting wide when he probably should have scored.

That miss looked very costly when, moments later, Burnley netted the winner. Pickford felt he was fouled but referee Christopher Kavanagh saw nothing wrong as Wood headed in Gudmundsson’s corner virtually from on the line.

Allardyce reacted by sending on Yannick Bolasie for Sigurdsson to boos from the Everton fans. The Toffees threw everything at Burnley in the closing stages but Williams’ red card rather summed things up.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s late equaliser for Burnley denied Manchester City victory for only the fourth time in the Premier League this season as Pep Guardiola’s side paid the price for missing a host of chances.

City took the lead through a long-range Danilo strike but failed to turn their dominance into further goals.

Raheem Sterling was guilty of their worst miss when he failed to find the target from six yards after meeting Kyle Walker’s cross at the far post.

Burnley had gone close through Ben Mee and Aaron Lennon, who were both denied by brilliant Ederson saves, but there was no stopping Gudmundsson’s effort.

He ran into the box to meet Matthew Lowton’s cross with a powerful half-volley that City’s Brazilian goalkeeper got a hand to, but could not keep out.

City still extend their lead at the top of the table to 16 points, at least until nearest rivals Manchester United play Huddersfield later on Saturday.

Burnley have now gone nine league games without a win, but the manner of their comeback to hold the runaway leaders will give boss Sean Dyche something to smile about after a disappointing start to 2018.

City pay the price for Sterling’s miss

Raheem Sterling misses from close range

Raheem Sterling has scored 19 goals in all competitions but somehow sidefooted wide from Kyle Walker’s low cross when City led 1-0

City were chasing their 23rd win in 26 league games this season, and also trying to become only the third team in the Premier League era (after Manchester United in 2000 and Chelsea in 2006) to hold an 18-point lead at the top of the table.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger complained this week that competition in the Premier League is being destroyed by City’s financial power but the memo has obviously not reached Dyche.

His Burnley side rode their luck at times, notably with Sterling’s terrible miss, but were a threat throughout and got their reward at the end of the game.

Guardiola had picked only six out of the seven permitted substitutes, because of a shortage of fit players and a reluctance to call upon his reserves, who played on Friday night.

But their failure to see out this victory was down to their sheer wastefulness, not any shortage of resources in their squad.

And while Sterling had complained before the game that City were being “butchered” by bad tackles, the Clarets’ wholehearted approach never got near to anything remotely resembling dangerous play.

The only challenge that might have irked Guardiola was a scything first-half tackle by Kevin Long on Ilkay Gundogan that earned the Burnley defender a booking.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says the £300m he has spent on his squad so far is “not enough” after their 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard scored an injury-time equaliser and the draw leaves United 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.

“We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world,” said the Portuguese.

“Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers,” he added.

Mourinho was appointed United boss in May 2016 and broke the world record last summer to sign £89m midfielder Paul Pogba, plus £30m defender Eric Bailly and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for £26.3m.

This year’s big deal was £75m striker Romelu Lukaku, as well as £31m defender Victor Lindelof and £40m for midfielder Nemanja Matic.

“[Spending £300m] is not enough. The price for the big clubs is different than for the other clubs. The big historical clubs are normally punished in the market because of that history,” he said.

“The boys are doing what they can and they are doing fine.”

Mourinho was asked if eight points from the past five games was good enough for a club like United.

He responded: “When you tell a club like Man Utd, do you think Milan is not as big as us? You think Real Madrid are not as big as we are?

“I know what a big club is. One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team. They are two different things.

“When you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham doesn’t have that responsibility because they are not a club with the same history as us.

“Arsenal don’t have the responsibility to win it. Chelsea don’t have the responsibility to win it. When you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Burnley are among the contenders for European qualification.

Burnley are three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool on 32 points after 19 Premier League games, despite securing only 40 points in total last season.

Sean Dyche’s side have already taken points off some of the top six, including an impressive 3-2 away win against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, and they will be looking to do the same at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Mourinho admits he has been impressed by Burnley’s performances this term and believes they are likely to be among the clubs challenging for the top six at the end of the season.

“It’s great [Burnley’s form]. If survival was the objective, I think the objective is in the pocket, it’s totally under control,” said Mourinho in an exclusive Christmas Day interview with Sky Sports News.

“If the objective is to finish top ten, they will do it. If the objective is to fight for European positions, they are there so they have the right to fight, so it’ll be a difficult opponent.

“If you compare what they are doing with the initial objectives, it’s a very good season.”

Burnley have the fourth-best defence in the league, behind Manchester City, United and Chelsea, conceding only 15 goals and Mourinho expects his side to face a tough task if they are to break down the Clarets defence.

“I think the record of goals conceded speaks for itself,” he added.

“They conceded three in the last one but before that they were really amazing so they defend very very well.

“Everybody knows the way they play, if you expect them to play creative beautiful football, they don’t do that.

“But if you talk about direct objective, pragmatic and play with their strength, I think they are very very good.

“They’ve worked with the same manager for a few years now, I think the identification between the players, the style of play, the manager, the manager’s ideas is very good, so what they do they do well.”

Harry Kane equalled Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for the most goals scored in a calendar year with a fine hat-trick against Burnley.

The Spurs star opened the scoring with a first-half penalty and struck twice after the break to make it 36 league goals in 2017 – equalling the record Shearer set in 1995.

It was also the England international’s seventh treble of the year, and took his tally to 53 goals in all competitions, as Spurs ran out 3-0 winners at Turf Moor.

Kane now has one chance to break Shearer’s record, with Tottenham at home to out-of-form Southampton on Boxing Day.

Kane’s lethal finishing was the only thing really separating the two teams – Tottenham may have dominated the chances but both teams were sloppy in possession.

The 24-year-old broke the deadlock in the sixth minute from the spot, after Dele Alli was bundled over in the box by Kevin Long – although Clarets fans hounded the England man for the remainder of the game for an alleged dive.

Kane made it 2-0 on 69 minutes went he was sent clear through by  Moussa Sissoko’s clever pass and made it look easy as he stroked the ball past goalkeeper Nick Pope.

He then completed his hat-trick with a lethal finish at the far post, netting his 15th of the season.

The victory sees Tottenham leapfrog both Burnley and rivals Arsenal into fifth in the table.

Alexis Sanchez converted a stoppage-time penalty as Arsenal snatched all three points in a 1-0 win at Burnley.

Clarets defender James Tarkowski was penalised for his shove on Aaron Ramsey in the 91st minute and Sanchez made no mistake from the spot to clinch the Gunners just their second league win on the road this season.

It was cruel on Burnley. Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny struck a controversial winner in time added on in the corresponding fixture last season and Sanchez’s late spot-kick sank Sean Dyche’s side at the Emirates in January this year.

The Clarets began with the confidence expected of a side chasing a fourth straight top-flight win for the first time since 1968, and Robbie Brady’s excellent 10th-minute cross only just eluded the diving Ashley Barnes.

Burnley went even closer to taking a first-half lead when Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s shot was pushed on to a post by Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Arsenal served warning of their threat as Ramsey fired over following Alexandre Lacazette’s whipped ball in from the left. A flurry of corners from dead-ball specialist Brady put Arsenal under more pressure, but the visitors responded again through Nacho Monreal’s thumping low drive.

The Gunners, without a poorly Mesut Ozil, but otherwise fielding the same side which beat Tottenham in their previous league match, were predictably hustled out of their comfort zone.

Tarkowski’s timely block denied Sanchez a shooting chance as Arsenal got a foothold in the game around the half-hour mark and Monreal curled another effort over the crossbar.

Brady’s curling free-kick from 22 yards shortly before the interval was destined for the top corner, but lacked the zip to really test Cech, who comfortably pushed it away for a corner.

Burnley skipper Ben Mee bravely blocked Sead Kolasinac’s attempted shot and thwarted the Bosnian again soon after as Arsenal began the second half with more purpose.

Gudmundsson’s stinging low drive was saved by Cech, but the Gunners enjoyed a lot more of the ball and probed in Burnley’s half.

Lacazette’s effort was deflected wide and Ramsey lashed a shot over after Sanchez’s lofted pass into the area before Jack Wilshere made his third league appearance of the season when replacing the ineffectual Alex Iwobi in the 67th minute.

The home side were next to threaten, with Jeff Hendrick setting Stephen Ward free down the left and his low cross was fired straight at Koscielny by Brady.

Chris Wood was sent on for Steven Defour and Danny Welbeck replaced Lacazette with 11 minutes left and the game hanging in the balance.

By now roles were reversed from the first half. Arsenal hogged possession and Burnley waited for the counter, while Wilshere fired wide from the edge of the area and Mee put in another crucial block on Ramsey’s snap-shot.

But just when it appeared Burnley had taken another point off one of the Premier League’s top six – they won at Chelsea on the opening day and have drawn against Liverpool and Tottenham – Tarkowski’s push was spotted by referee Lee Mason and Sanchez condemned them to their third league defeat of the season.

Jeff Hendrick finished off a magnificent Burnley team move to beat Everton at Goodison Park as the Clarets’ impressive start to the season continued.

After withstanding some early pressure, Sean Dyche’s side took the lead against the run of play with build-up play which included a series of 24 passes.

Everton’s Nikola Vlasic was caught ball-watching as Stephen Ward cut it back into the box for Hendrick, who smartly sidestepped Morgan Schneiderlin’s poor attempt at a challenge and placed it into the net from 15 yards.

It is Burnley’s best ever start to a Premier League season as they move to sixth in the table and have eight away points, more than they accumulated in the whole of last season.

The Toffees have now lost four of their last five Premier League games and are two places above the relegation zone.

Everton struggle after bright start

Leighton Baines
Everton’s Leighton Baines looked on as his side suffered only their second home defeat to Burnley since 1963

Everton made a lively start to the game inside the opening 20 minutes, a contrast to some of their slow and lacklustre performances so far this season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s pace causing Burnley early problems.

Oumar Niasse, who scored two goals as a substitute against Bournemouth last week, bent a shot from outside the area straight into the hands of Nick Pope in the Burnley goal.

The Senegal striker then attempted a dink over the goalkeeper from close range, with his effort cleared off the line.

The Toffees’ record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson then missed a chance to put his side in front after his side-footed effort was easily saved by Pope. The Icelandic midfielder, making his 250th league appearance, is yet to register an assist or score in the Premier League for Everton.

Everton struggled in the second-half as they chased the equaliser. Calvert-Lewin and Niasse failed to make any real impact and Sigurdsson’s performance was best demonstrated by a long-range shot which was blasted well over the bar.

Wayne Rooney came on as a second-half substitute but could not find a way through Burnley’s stubborn defence.

Everton did have two late penalty shouts, firstly when a Rooney header glanced off the raised hand of Matt Lowton and a Williams header seemed to strike Lowton on the chest rather than the hand.

Former Everton and Scotland winger Pat Nevin described Everton’s performance as being “painful to watch”.

“If you are a striker it doesn’t matter if you get the ball or not you have to work your socks off. You have to create space for your partner or other players to run into the space you vacate. You have to do horrible miles for others,” Nevin said on the BBC.

Ronald Koeman will face yet more difficult questions at Everton after Jeff Hendrick bolstered Burnley’s impressive away record with the winner at Goodison Park.

Republic of Ireland international Hendrick was on the end of a sweeping move as the Clarets’ 1-0 win was added to a collection of positive road results already featuring a victory at Chelsea and draws at Tottenham and Liverpool.

But it plunged Everton straight back into a crisis, with last weekend’s win over Bournemouth – their only league victory since the opening day of the season – a distant memory as four league defeats in five matches have left manager Koeman’s side just two points above the bottom three.

Burnley’s 12-point haul represents their best start to a Premier League campaign. In contrast to their hosts, who looked disjointed and desperate at times despite some significant summer investment, each one of Sean Dyche’s players knows the game plan and they never deviate from it.

Hendrick easily side-stepped Morgan Schneiderlin in the penalty area to slide home a low shot after Scott Arfield and Stephen Ward combined down the left towards the end of a 24-pass move bettered only in numbers by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season.

Everton visibly crumbled, with Ashley Williams lucky to escape when his clearance rebounded off Hendrick to Arfield, who was booked for diving in the penalty area after the pedestrian centre-back attempted to correct his error.

Koeman had criticised his players for being “afraid” after the midweek Europa League draw at home to Apollon Limassol and he injected some youthful exuberance with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Nikola Vlasic given starts.

Oumar Niasse, ineligible in Europe after being excluded from the squad, made his first league start for Everton since May 2016 and his first under Koeman.

He partnered Calvert-Lewin up front with Wayne Rooney dropped to the bench for the first time since his return from Manchester United.

For a while it appeared to be working with Niasse’s energy supplemented by some purposeful running from the two youngsters, creating two chances for Gylfi Sigurdsson. But the Iceland international – so clinical for Swansea but yet to open his Everton account in the league – wasted them both.

However, Dyche’s Burnley are masters at making the most of what little they have and despite their hosts’ perceived dominance they were able to cut through them with ease midway through the first half.

From there the Toffees laboured with little reward after the break with Rooney and academy graduate Tom Davies sent on for the final quarter to try and break a well-drilled Burnley side’s tight grip on the game.

That they failed was as much down to the Clarets’ resilience as it was to Everton’s failings as Dyche’s men have already proved their mettle in similar situations on the road this season.

Rooney thought he should have had a penalty when his flick-on from Sigurdsson’s cross bounced on to Matthew Lowton’s arm but, unlike last week, there would be no late reprieve.

The boos ringing out at the end left Koeman in no doubt as to how bad a start this has been.

It may not have been the result Frank de Boer wanted as his future as Crystal Palace manager rests on the edge of a knife, but this was not the calamity-ridden football seen in the opening weeks of the season, but rather an assured team performance unfortunately hit by some seriously bad individual errors.

Chris Wood scored the only goal of the game in Burnley’s 1-0 win over Palace after he latched on to Lee Chung-Yong’s aimless back-pass to fire past Wayne Hennessey inside the opening five minutes, but Palace had more than enough chances to secure the share of the spoils were it not for some fine goalkeeping from Nick Pope, who replaced the injured Tom Heaton midway through the first-half, and a series of ridiculous misses.

wood-goal

Scott Dann fluffed a close-range header in injury time, having already seen two volleys cleared off the line, and Pope denied Christian Benteke the finishing touch on a well-worked team move.

The result sends the Clarets up to 7th in the Premier League table, and keeps Palace in the bottom three, without a win – or even a goal scored – to their name this season.

It took just three minutes for Wood – making his first start for Burnley following his summer move from Leeds – to open the scoring, with the goal put on a plate for the New Zealand international.

heaton3

Lee played a back-pass to no one in particular, and Wood raced onto possession before curling a fine early finish past Hennessey to hand under pressure De Boer the worst start possible.

Palace could have pulled level almost instantly, but Dann’s excellent volley on the turn was cleared off the line by Lowton, with Benteke later sending a header toward goal that left Heaton scrambling – but the ball dropped just wide of the post.

Vokes also headed just wide as the action continued in an end-to-end manner during the opening 10 minutes.

1

Palace had reacted well to going behind so soon after kick-off, winning a number of corners with play largely focused in Burnley’s half.

Schlupp expertly created space for himself in the area but failed with his shot, McArthur went close with a header, and Heaton had to claim a cross from Lee – hurting himself in the process and leaving the field to be replaced by Nick Pope.

The substitution took much of the pace out the game, with Burnley taking control again and coming close through a fine Gudmunsson cross that Fosu-Mensah had to clear.

Townsend was the first to test Pope, but the keeper dealt well with his 20-yard strike, and Palace left the pitch at half-time behind, but certainly not embarrassed.

de-boer

The visitors dominated after the restart, but for all the play they had in Burnley’s half there were few clear chances created.

The Clarets’ back line was dealing easily with various deliveries into the area, as Benteke became increasingly frustrated in the box by the lack of quality aimed towards him.

Schlupp should have levelled the scores with just under 20 minutes remaining, finding himself with space inside the penalty area, but he got everything wrong, leaning back and firing wildly over the crossbar.

Hennessey was called upon to push away Barnes’ curling strike to ensure Palace remained just one goal behind, but that was a rare attack from Burnley in a half during which the visitors saw much of the ball.

They pushed and pushed for an equaliser, and Pope made a fine save from Benteke after he had broken into the penalty area for what was Palace’s best chance of the match.

Another corner led to another Dann volley that was cleared off the line, before the centre-back headed wide from two yards out with the goal gaping as the match headed into injury time.

He fell to the turf in despair, but this is a performance that promises much more than the scoreline suggests, and could see De Boer remain in his job for one week more.
