A monument will be erected in honour of Major Adam Maxwell Mahama, who was murdered at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region.

President Akufo Addo, who made the announcement when he paid a visit to the family of the deceased, also announced other packages for Adam Mahama’s family, including a 500,000 Education Trust Fund for his children’s education.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QemClEmRs2hUoWHE1Gsc9kytOxbFHdh4″]The President, who doubles as the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, also promoted Adam Mahama from Captain to Major posthumously. He would also be given a state burial.

Adam Mahama’s family had earlier requested that a monument be erected to honour the army officer when the leadership of Parliament paid a courtesy call.

The family expressed the hope that this monument would serve as a reminder of the tragedy and a deterrent to the canker of mob justice in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Defense Staff has revealed that the Ghana Armed Forces has completed investigations into the death of the army officer.

He indicated that the report on his death will soon be forwarded to the Defence Minister for the appropriate decision to be taken.

“We have already submitted the report to the Ministry. In addition, we have disseminated vital information on this very unfortunate incident to all ranks of the Armed Forces.”

Briefing the President on the decisions taken so far by the Ghana Armed Forces since Adam Mahama’s death, Major General Obed Akwa said: “In the first place, a team was dispatched to the incident area where the Chief of Army staff was in charge. They went to examine the circumstances surrounding this sordid act…”

“We have appointed a liaison officer who on daily basis liaised with the family to find out critical needs and how it can be addressed. The President has already dispatched a high-powered delegation,” he added.

Major Mahama was lynched by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Upper West Denkyira District of the Central Region, when he was allegedly mistaken for a robber.

So far, some forty one persons  have been remanded for their suspected roles in  the gruesome act. The family has announced that his burial will take place on Friday, June 9, 2017.

Local investors have had to play second-fiddle to their foreign counterparts in the financing of huge infrastructure projects under government’s Public Private Partnership programme.

This is attributable to the inability of local investors to mobilise the huge funds required for these big-ticket transactions.

Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of State responsible for government’s PPP initiatives, said in an interview that the PPP arrangement is generally accepted and welcomed “except that the huge capital requirements, for example, to construct a dual-carriage road between Accra and Kumasi or to widen the Tema Motorway and do overheads at each end demands lots of investment.

“So even though the local private sector has welcomed this idea, they are finding it difficult to mobilise resources to do it. What some of them are doing is partner some of the external private sector to come up with proposals to do some of these things.”

Conservative estimates indicate that the country’s huge infrastructure deficit requires sustained spending of at least US$1.5billion per annum over the next 10 years to address the shortfall.

The deficit covers all the main infrastructure areas: roads, energy, water, aviation, housing, and ICT.

To address these challenges, government proposed establishment of the Ghana Infrastructure Fund (GIF) to deal with the huge infrastructure deficit and to focus on strategic infrastructure that will lead to job-creation and increase growth of the economy.

Parliament last week passed the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund bill to give thrust to the idea. The law establishes the fund as a body corporate with the power to acquire and hold property.

Pressing projects that government seeks private investment for include construction of a dual Accra-Kumasi highway, the Cape Coast-Obuasi road, and Accra-Tema motorway.

Others include the construction of an inland port at Boankra in the Ashanti Region, and regional airports in five other regions.

Ongoing public-private projects include the 40-megawatt first phase of what will eventually be 200 megawatts of solar power capacity in the Northern Region. It is being undertaken by the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) and DCH Solargiga, a subsidiary of China’s Solargiga.

The Ministry of Transport has also engaged the services of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to undertake a feasibility study on the Boankra project.

Mr. Pelpuo said: “We seek PPP in dualising the Accra-Kumasi road and tolling it. We seek PPP for the Cape Coast-Obuasi road; it’s a very heavy traffic area. We seek PPP in the construction of regional airports and in the railway sector, too. These are major areas that immediately we want to start having discussions on”.

With a population of just over 25 million, the country generates about 1,900 megawatts of electricity from hydro and thermal sources. However, a 10 percent year-on-year growing demand has created a sizeable power supply deficit that the government is desperate to fill.

Government has said it wants to achieve a 5,000-megawatt generation target by 2016 on the back of private investment in thermal power.

The Minister of State at the Presidency in charge of Public-Private Partnerships, Rashid Pelpuo, has called on the state to organize a befitting state burial to honor the memory of the late Paul Victor Obeng.

“A state burial is a logical thing to do for such a rare character in the Ghanaian society,” he told Citi News.

PV Obeng died on Saturday after he suffered an asthma attack while driving towards his home on the Spintex road, Accra.

He served as the Senior Presidential advisor to the President, John Mahama.

Several politicians and government officials have been paying glowing tribute to the late Obeng.

Speaking to Citi News after paying a short visit to the late senor Presidential advisor’s house, Mr Pelpuo lauded Mr. Obeng’s role in national development and described him as a veteran in Ghanaian politics

“Once a Minister, once a Presidential Advisor and now a Presidential Advisor, he has always been at one point, was always there for the Presidents since the Presidency of Jerry Rawlings, Atta Mills and at a point became the Prime Minister of this country.

He therefore recommended a state burial to serve as a befitting testament to P.V. Obeng’s legacy as a true statesman
