The Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA), will host the maiden summit on the state of Ghanaian women in media on Tuesday 20th March 2018, at the British Council Hall in Accra.

The summit will discuss the state of women journalists in Ghana and their role in advancing the country’s socio-economic agenda.

The theme for the summit is “Shaping our Future: Women in Media Ghana – a Conversation among Stakeholders”.

Speakers billed for the event include Prof Audrey Gadzekpo, Dr. Sarah Akrofi-Quarcoo, Nana Yaa Ofori-Atta, Edith Dankwah, Nhyira Addo and Nana Aba Anamoah.

AWMA Founder and Convener Shamima Muslim Alhassan, said: “the summit will highlight the peculiar challenges and issues facing women in media; including skills development, equal opportunity, due recognition and fair remuneration.”

“If the media gets it right, society is better off. However we must consider who is telling the stories in the media. We must ask: who are the editors, the producers and the employers? What stories are being told and how are they being told? We must consider how the stories we read and hear about women and girls are shaped by narratives; and we must ask who controls those narratives?

We stand on the shoulders of veteran women in media who paved the way; we will also use the opportunity to celebrate them. The summit is part of global activities to mark International Women’s month. In line with the ongoing celebrations and global theme of “Press for Progress”, AWMA is committed to working together to elevate and organize women in the media industry in Ghana to strive for equality, parity and authority,” she added.

AWMA will pay tribute to the work of trailblazers such as Elizabeth Ohene, Adwoa Yeboah Afari, Salma Alhassan, Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, Sarah Akrofi-Quarcoo, Audrey Gadzekpo, Margaret Amoakohene, Doris Yaa Dartey and others, who have broken barriers and paved the way for increased participation of women in media in Ghana.

AWMA extends invitation to all women in journalism and communications to participate in this gathering which will seek to explore how women in media press for progress, increase visibility and reach for impact and power.

The British Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat recently ran an international short story writing competition based on the theme of ‘Belonging’, which received over three thousand entries from both school children and teachers from Commonwealth countries around the world.

Eyako Eli Dzantor from International School of Ahafo, Ghana, is delighted to have been named as one of the winning entries and was commended in the 11-14 category.

Each Commonwealth country has a rich heritage of storytelling which was reflected in the competition Pupils aged 7-14 years, and their teachers were invited to express their experiences and thoughts around ‘Belonging’ in the form of a short story or an illustration.

The competition was judged by the children’s author and former Children’s Laureate Anne Fine, and also by the British Council’s Arts department.

In commenting on the competition, Ms Fine said, “I valued this opportunity to read stories from so many parts of the world. Few of us realize how deeply our thoughts and attitudes are steeped in our own experience. To read about the more intimate aspects of people’s lives in countries I‘d known mostly through political reporting was not just enlightening but at times truly humbling.”

“I’m of the generation that learned about the richness and variety of the Commonwealth way back in primary school. But judging this competition reminded me of its sheer strengths and wonders, as well as making me even more aware of the enormous problems so many nations within it still face. Writing can leave you knowing so much more, both about yourself and about the world that surrounds you.”

Mrs Barbara Deveney, Principal and English teacher from International School of Ahafo said “The Commonwealth Class story writing competition gave Eyako a unique opportunity to write for a different, unknown audience, rather than writing just for his teacher and friends.  It has been a great experience for Eyako to be commended by the British Council, and he should be proud of himself although, I must admit, his story is very good!”

The Commonwealth Class initiative also enables schools to take part in online debates, competitions and work on projects with the aim of giving young people a unique and hands-on international learning experience based around the Commonwealth family of countries.

Eyako Eli Dzantor, said “When I first heard about the Commonwealth writing competition, it was never on my mind that I would be a winning candidate. I entered the competition as a fun activity. In fact, my entire class entered the competition. Joining this competition, and being recognized by the British Council, has really boosted my confidence in trying out new writing skills”.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is warning all foreigners involved in retail trade to leave the Ghanaian market by end of this month.

Speaking to Citi News, the President of the Association, Mr. Ofori said the continuous depreciation of the cedi is as a result of the large foreign influx in retail trade in the country.

Mr. Ofori said the infiltration of foreigners into the economy contradicts the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC)Act.

According to him, attempts  to get foreigners out of the retail trade with legislation have proven futile.

The Union in a press statement signed by the Deputy National Organiser, Clement Boateng threatened to flush out all foreigners in the markets; if they do not leave the country within the stipulated date- June, 30, 2014

It also announced plans to stage massive demonstration against government over the 2 percent special levy on import as well as the 2.5 percent increase in VAT.
