Brighton boss Chris Hughton has won the Premier League’s manager of the month award for the first time.

The 59-year-old guided the Seagulls to victories over West Ham and Swansea in February.

Brighton, who beat Arsenal on Sunday, are undefeated since 20 January and sit 10th in the table in their first season in the Premier League.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won the player award after scoring four goals in three games.

The 25-year-old is the joint-highest scorer this season with 24 goals, level with Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Hughton took charge at Brighton in December 2014 and led them to the Premier League with a second-place finish in last season’s Championship.

He said of the award: “It’s a wonderful achievement for the club and certainly for a group of players that have improved as the season has gone on and knowing that we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

Brighton beat Arsenal for the first time since 1982 to increase the pressure on Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Lewis Dunk put Brighton ahead when he hooked the ball home from a corner after it dropped to him inside the six-yard box.

The Seagulls added a second when Laurent Koscielny’s misplaced pass was intercepted and Pascal Gross teased a high cross into the box for Glenn Murray to head past Petr Cech.

Arsenal pulled a goal back when Brighton failed to clear their lines. Granit Xhaka fed the ball into Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, who cleverly flicked the ball home with the outside of his boot.

Arsenal dominated possession in the second half and had a late chance to equalise through Aubameyang but he could only shoot straight at Mathew Ryan.

The Gunners were also fortunate not to have Sead Kolasinac, who had already been booked, sent off for a challenge that ended Ezequiel Schelotto’s involvement.

Under-fire Wenger loses four in a row

Arsenal were meek in back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final at Wembley last Sunday and at the Emirates in the Premier League four days later.

Losing to Pep Guardiola’s irresistible champions-elect is one thing, but to a Brighton side battling relegation will not be so palatable for Arsenal fans growing increasingly tired of Wenger’s reign.

It was the first time the Gunners had lost four consecutive matches since October 2002 in a run that saw them beaten by Everton, Auxerre, Blackburn and Borussia Dortmund.

They were defending champions that season and ended the campaign as runners-up to Manchester United but retained the FA Cup.

Over 15 years later and things are not quite so rosy for Wenger with the club seemingly in terminal decline.

Wenger, initially at least, did not look like a man under pressure at the Amex as he warmly embraced Brighton counterpart Chris Hughton and shared a joke with a photographer.

However, by early in the second half with his side 2-1 down his mood darkened and he nervously pulled apart a coffee stirrer as he sat on the bench.

The travelling fans, who held up ‘Wenger out’ banners at the final whistle, will want the Arsenal board to wake up and smell it.

Nacho Monreal put the Gunners ahead early on when he shot through a crowded penalty area after Brighton had failed to clear a free-kick.

A well worked Brighton free-kick resulted in Solly March striking the post from 20 yards shortly afterwards.

But Arsenal added a second goal after half-time when a slick passing move on the counter-attack was emphatically finished off by Alex Iwobi.

Jermain Defoe fired Bournemouth to their first win of the Premier League season to relieve mounting pressure on boss Eddie Howe.

The 34-year-old rifled his first Bournemouth goal in 16 years, as the Cherries came from behind to sink visitors Brighton 2-1.

Solly March’s header had Brighton dreaming of a second successive Premier League win but Andrew Surman coolly levelled before England poacher Defoe stole the victory.

Defoe last scored for Bournemouth on a loan spell in May 2001, and the veteran exhibited all his stunning staying power to settle this south coast derby.

Bournemouth were in real danger of losing five successive Premier League matches for the first time when March capped a flowing move, but manager Howe’s men responded in style to kick-start their season.

Defoe has turned out for West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Toronto FC and Sunderland since his loan stint on the south coast as a teenage goalscorer of rich promise.

A full generation of strikers has come and gone in between, but still Defoe keeps on delivering, adding again to his impressive haul that included 15 Premier League goals with the Black Cats last term.

The Cherries’ success leaves Crystal Palace as the final top-flight team still seeking points, with Defoe securing a crucial boost to boss Howe.

Super sub Jordon Ibe laid on both goals in a clinical cameo that will raise hopes of the former Liverpool starlet finally making good on his £15million transfer fee.

A nervy first-half saw Shane Duffy play in Josh King and Harry Arter hand possession straight to Davy Propper. Neither man could produce a finish however, leaving the clash deadlocked at the break.

Bournemouth wasted 65 per cent of first-half possession and almost paid an immediate price after the break, when Dale Stephens hit the bar after a Brighton corner.

The emboldened visitors then struck with a clinical and eye-catching move, Pascal Gross chesting down to Anthony Knockaert who immediately played the ball back into the German’s path.

March then despatched Gross’ whipped cross with a smart header, sucking all the air out of Bournemouth and their fans.

Here was the killer instinct Howe’s hosts craved so desperately, cruelly distilled into a goal magicked from little more than three touches.

Howe had asked his men for fight though, and that steel showed itself in an equaliser of high quality.

Surman traded passes with Ibe, collecting the replacement’s neat backheel, cut inside Lewis Dunk’s rash challenge – and coolly side-footed home.

With the match finally alight, Ibe had a rasping shot blocked by Dunk, while Brighton’s new talisman Gross was desperately seeking medical attention.

Gross eventually found his feet and returned to the pitch – but not before Ibe had played in Defoe, who turned, scurried on and buried a drive past Seagulls goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. A timely finish from a timeless striker.

The dream move for Black Stars player, Raphael Dwamena, from FC Zurich to Brighton and Hove Albion has collapsed due to an issue discovered in the course of his medical.

Earlier this week, Brighton and FC Zurich agreed a fee and the player flew into England on Thursday for his medical.

However, on Friday, it was confirmed by Swiss portal, www.sport.ch, that the deal would not go ahead after a problem was discovered as Dwamena undertook his medical.

Sport quoted a statement from FC Zurich which said that they had also seen the said anomaly but they did not consider it “neither harmful to health nor compromising the performance of a top athlete.”

They had carried out a medical on Dwamena at Schulthess Clinic in Switzerland before he left for England.

Football data and statistic portal, Squawka, also stated the news and said that Zurich had confirmed the turn in events.

By the latest development, Dwamena is now set to stay at FC Zurich for the rest of the season.

The second edition of the popular My Book of #GHcoats has been released online. The book is a collection of humorous quotes about everyday life in Ghana compiled via social media using the hash-tag #GHcoats and #GHquotes.

The quotes, though attributed to famous people dead or living, are not true. They are the works of the creative minds of contributors; who ascribe the quotes to certain personalities. The quotes mainly reflect certain characteristics of the people they are attributed to.

According to the editor of the book, Nana Awere Damoah, the project was borne out of the need to capture, share and preserve authentic Ghanaian humor.

“After the success of the first edition, which we published in November 2013, there’s been a call by the public to update the book. The team therefore went to work to produce the Revised Stranded Version (2nd edition) of My Book of #GHcoats with some illustrations to bring the quotes to life. The quotes not only stimulate hilarity, they mostly have an intrinsic proverbial element that presents a way of life for many. Authors of these quotes derive their idea from social and current affairs, political events and personal  observations,” he said.

The ingredients of a good #GHcoats are both the funny or reflective element and the fantastic attribution. Some of the notable quotes include:

Adding kanwie to your okro might make you lick your lips after a meal, but this practice is not advisable 30 minutes to your next boxing match. ~ Muhammad Ali

A real trap is when a wife offers the last meat in the soup she is saving to the husband. ~ Pope John Paul II

No one can eat bofrot without oiling his/her lips. ~ Henry Ford

The book is available for free download via smashwords.com, kindle and amazon.
