The Paramount Chief of Tatali Sanguli, Obori Gariba Yankoso II, together with his sub-chiefs of Tatali in the Northern Region, boycotted today’s 61st Independence district anniversary celebration.

The Paramount Chief accused the DCE of the area, Thomas Mbomba of disrespecting the traditional authorities hence their refusal to participate in today’s activities.

He noted that the Chiefs want him, transferred because he does not consult them when it comes to decision making.

“There is lack of cooperation between the DCE and the Chiefs, he has divided the chiefs. We are the majority of chiefs, we have Konkomba and Basali, and he has selected a few Konkomba chiefs. This DCE is the worst we have encountered, he doesn’t need consultation, he doesn’t need advice, what he does, he does it alone,” he said

Obori Gariba Yankoso the second, also noted that their presence is not recognized hence there was no point attending the celebration.”

They further alleged that the DCE deliberately caused the district to be divided into two, based on tribal lines, an action they find unacceptable. The Chiefs are therefore calling on the President to sack Thomas Mbomba as the DCE of the area.

“Last March, we went there, no chief was selected to give award to the children, so why should we go there again, when we come here, we sit and do nothing, when chiefs go there, you have to give them respect, but the DCE doesn’t respect any chief in the town apart from his chiefs. He must be transferred and I plead with government to do something ”he said.

The Coalition of Newly Recruited Graduate Teachers has said they will boycott the celebration of this year’s May Day celebration over the non-payment of their salaries.

According to the group, the government has failed to pay them their seven-month arrears in spite of assurances to do so.

Today, 1st May is celebrated across the world as International Labour Day known in Ghana as May Day.

It is in commemoration of labourers and the working class who build the country.

May Days are declared national holidays with National parades are held across the country to celebrate the efforts of Ghanaian workers.

Workers of all professions, including teachers, take part in such national parades but the group say they would not take part in this year’s parade because they believe the government is taking them for granted.

The secretary of the coalition, Charles Chetu who spoke to Citi News on Sunday said, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department is yet to tell them when their salaries would be paid.

“As we speak, we haven’t been paid. Today [Sunday] is 30th of April. We are going to mark workers day tomorrow. Teachers, specifically we haven’t been paid, not to even talk about our arrears so we have decided that since the government, our employers have taken us for granted then we will not participate in the workers day celebrations.”

Charles Chetu added that, “As we speak now, we are hungry and we cannot participate in that program. To worsen our plight schools are reopening this week and we are expected to report to our various places of work and unfortunately, we haven’t been paid. Controller and Accountant General’s Department has not even communicated to us even on the delayed payment of salaries. How are we reporting to these places of work and how are we going to survive until when they are happy they pay us our money so we think the best thing is that we stay away off since we are not considered relevant in the running of the affairs of this country.”

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo will later today [Monday] address Ghanaian workers at the national celebration of May Day at the Black Star square in Accra.

The Minority’s boycott of the Appointment committee’s sitting, is not affecting the ongoing vetting, a Member of the Appointment’s Committee, Anthony Karbo has claimed.

According to him, the majority members left on the committee to continue the work, are doing a marvelous job.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Zr15ehVJlGCumC1BbiCMNX82DVFzDKKk”]The Minority members on the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday boycotted sitting, stating among other things that due diligence was being sacrificed.

They also complained that they were being overstretched especially when the House should have been on break ahead of the Easter celebration.

While dismissing the concerns of the Minority, Anthony Karbo, told Citi News his side is determined to do a thorough job.

“Unfortunately, we have finished the vetting so if they are coming back, they will only be coming back in respect with the report that is made before Parliament. We are expecting to form a quorum in accordance with the Members of Parliament, and we went ahead to conduct the vetting of Ministers, and so they had the opportunity to sit with the vetting committee and bring out their side of the issues and also to question some of the nominees.”

The Lawra Legislator believes that the Minority has the right to boycott the committee’s sitting, “it will be difficult to come back on other leg, claiming that those people do not merit the position given to them.”

He argued that, their concerns will not hold because the Majority has “questioned and done very serious interrogation of many of the Ministers.”

“We have questioned their competence, we have questioned their understanding of the sectors that they have been assigned by the President, and we have also gone through their CVs ” he said.

The Minority’s decision has been met with mixed reactions from some individuals and groups.

Pro NPP Pressure Group,  Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), is one of those groups, which criticized the Minority,  stating that their decision smacked of hypocrisy and poor attitude to work.
