An actor has died after being shot while filming a music video in the Australian city of Brisbane.

The man, in his 20s, suffered a chest wound inside a bar in Eagle Lane in the city centre, Queensland police said.

Several firearms had been discharged during the filming just before 1400 local time (0400 GMT), said Detective Inspector Tom Armitt.

Police have not named the band, but local media have reported it is Sydney-based hip hop group Bliss N Eso.

“At this point in time, Queensland Police are conducting a criminal investigation,” Insp Armitt said

“We do not know specifically how those injuries occurred at this point in time and that’ll be [the] subject of our investigation.”

Brooklyn Standard bar said it would remain closed on Monday as police conducted their investigation.

“The incident occurred during a film shoot at the venue, for which Brooklyn Standard had been wholly rented out, outside of opening hours,” it said in a statement on Facebook.

“We would like everyone to know that none of our staff were involved in the incident and everyone is safe, and we are doing everything we can to help the police investigation at this time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the individual involved, and we appreciate your respect and understanding at this time.”

Investigations were continuing, police said, adding that there was no risk to the public.

The sequel to the Hollywood blockbuster Pacific Rim, starring British actor John Boyega, had been filming in the same area in recent weeks.

A spokesman for that production told Australian media that the incident had nothing to do with their filming and that their set was closed on Monday.

The recent gas explosion near the Trade Fair Centre at La in Accra, which resulted in the death of 11 people, and injured more than 40 others, has caused shortage of blood at the 37 Military Hospital.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the hospital, Major Gariba Pabi, “as a result of the recent emergency healthcare we provided at our facility as a result of the recent gas explosion, the blood reserve at our blood bank is going down”.

Making a passionate appeal through the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra yesterday, Major Pabi called on “individuals, religious organisations and institutions to voluntarily assist the hospital in the donation of blood to beef up its reserve”.He expressed the hope that the hospital’s plea would be heard. The Blood Bank of the 37 Military Hospital has capacity to store 600 units of blood at a time. In the wake of the gas explosion, the hospital used about 150 units of blood on the victims who were rushed to the facility for treatment.

According to Major Pabi, the hospital would need 200 units of blood to shore up the stock.

“We cannot wait for the blood bank to deplete before making the appeal. We are, therefore, appealing to the public to assist us before we face an acute shortage which can result in the loss of lives,” he said.

Asked how the victims on admission at the hospital were faring, Major Pabi said they were responding to treatment, adding that some of them had been discharged.

On Thursday, December 22, 2016, nine people initially died in a gas explosion that occurred near the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre at La. The number of casualties eventually rose to 11.

About 40 others who sustained various degrees of injury were rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching, the 37 Military and the La General hospitals.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion occurred around 5.30 p.m. and swept through the street onto parts of the Trade Fair Centre.

Some of the injured were workers waiting for buses on a road that links the area to Tseaddo, Spintex and Teshie Tsui Bleoo.

Donation

In a related development, the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), on December 26, 2016, donated GH¢11,000 to 22 of the victims of the La gas explosion at the 37 Military Hospital.

Each of the victims received a cash donation of GH¢500.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the CBOD, Mr Senyo Hosi, made the donation on behalf of the chamber.

He charged the government to, for once, crack the whip to forestall deaths caused by negligence at public places.

He said there were laws but it was unfortunate that people got away with negligence, irrespective of how grievous the outcome of their negligence was.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has organised a blood donation exercise to create awareness on its mandate to regulate blood and blood derivatives as essential medicines.

Speaking at the event, held at the premises of the FDA, in Accra, on Friday, Mr Hudu Mogtari, the Chief Executive Officer of the FDA said: “Blood and its derivatives are life-saving therapies for countless trauma cases; including accidents, surgery, haemorrhage during labour, delivery and postpartum.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”WeT7VcMjSKDFRSiwV7UB0ca26MHDSJA1″]Mr Mogtari said: “In World Health Assembly resolutions 63:12, 58:13, 28:72, member states were admonished to make available sufficient supplies of Blood and Blood derivatives of assured quality and safety in the face of known and emerging threats to public health by instituting stringent regulatory controls along the entire transfusion chain.”

“The FDA is encouraged by the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851) and a Memorandum of Understanding with NSBG to pursue its mandate of protecting public health and safety,” he noted.

Dr Edwin Nkansah, the Head of Biological Products Units of the FDA, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, the WHO enlisted blood and its derivatives products as part of biological products, which had also been captured as an essential medicine.

Dr Nkansah explained: “Essential medicines are medicines that need to be available, of good quality, and affordable, therefore, blood which falls under this category, needs to be regulated by the FDA, as part of the Authority’s mandate.

“What we do is try to regulate the processes of coming out with blood products and blood components that are safe and effective,” he said.

Dr Nkansah noted that the regulation process was started in 2008 to ensure that there was no wastage in terms of the blood collected.

“The FDA has been working with the National Blood Services Ghana (NBSG) to ensure that every unit of blood or blood component has been collected and tested,” Mr Mogtari said.

He said after the collection of blood, when intended for transfusion, the two institutions ensured that it had been prepared, stored and distributed in compliance with internationally recognised standards and specifications.

Meanwhile, Mr Stephen Danso, a Senior blood donor at the Southern Area Blood Centre of the NBSG, said the blood donation drive was necessary because there was the need to always store blood so as to efficiently handle emergencies.

Mr Danso told the donors that they could donate blood after every four months.
