Senior Housemasters of Bolgatanga Senior High School (BIGBOSS) have denied allegations that; they refused to sign an exeat for a first-year student, Elliasu Zakaria, to seek medical care leading to his death.

Students’ of BIGBOSS in the Upper East Region on Friday evening vandalized four vehicles belonging to the school and teachers over the death of the deceased.

The irate students accused their senior housemasters, Mr. Osman Iddrisu and Isaac Dzandza of deliberately refusing to sign an exeat for the deceased who was seriously ill and needed urgent medical attention.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RRJM8pFzimfhj7QYkfyEskMg3eOSqw9X”]The situation led to the deployment of a joint police and military team to protect lives and property at the school.

But speaking to Citi News, senior house master, Mr. Osman Iddrisu said the deceased never came to them to seek permission to go outside the school for medical attention.

“On Friday headmaster briefed us as management that we’ve lost a student from Bawku who was rushed to the hospital two days ago and he passed away. So it was on our way to Bawku that we heard that students had mass up at administration and said we the senior house masters refused the deceased an exeat to go home and treat himself that was why he died.”

“But in the bus, the student who was with the deceased told us it was untrue that house masters denied the deceased an exeat because he did not send the deceased to any senior house master’s house or office for an exeat.”

“We as senior house masters did not even know when the deceased was sent to hospital because the deceased reported to the school’s dispensary when he was not feeling well then the nurse recommended that the deceased to be sent to hospital for medical attention because he was vomiting blood so we housemasters were not aware of the situation,” Osman Iddrisu stated.

Headmaster of the school Afelibiek Ababu who spoke off record said, a resolution reached at during a crunch meeting with the security apparatus at the Regional coordinating council have decided that, the police should be present in the school during daytime to observe students movement and the military join them in the night for patrol till Monday, 23rd October.

He added that, from Monday to Friday, the police will only be visible in the nights adding that, a committee will be constituted to investigate the matter and perpetrators will be dealt with.

Meanwhile calm has returned to the school as students were seen going about with their normal duties.

Some students of the Bolgatanga Senior High School in the Upper East Region who went on rampage over the death of their mate, have blamed it on the delay on the part of their house masters to grant the request of the deceased, Elliasu Zakari, for an exeat.

According to them, the senior house masters – Mr. Osman Iddrisu and Isaac Dzandza,  refused to sign the exeat on time to enable him go home, hence his death.

Students of the school went on rampage on Friday over the incident, and in the process vandalized properties belonging to the school.

“The deceased, Elliasu Zakaria, went to sign an exeat to go home, and the senior house masters did not agree and even beat the student up, so he went home and run out of blood and died,” some of the students told Citi News.

Although refusing to sign exeat forms is not unusual, some of the students told Citi News that sometimes their request to go home to seek medical attention are turned down despite insufficient drugs at the school’s dispensary.

“Some of the senior house masters do not always want to sign exeats for students. When you tell them you are sick and need an exeat to go home and treat yourself, they always refer you to the dispensary and there are not enough drugs at the dispensary,” another student said.

Students to pay for damages

The head teacher of the school, Mr. Afelibiek Ababu, has said the students will be surcharged for the damages caused.

“But for the Regional Minister Rockson Bukari’s intervention, I would have closed the school. You are a great disappointment to me, every night we carry students to hospital and even pay some of your bills and because of an unfortunate incident, you have gone round to vandalize properties, but the damage that has been caused, you must be ready to pay.”

A moderate Muslim cleric has been shot dead in Mombasa, the latest killing of a preacher in the Kenyan city.

Sheikh Mohammed Idris, chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya, was killed close to a mosque near his home by a group of gunmen.

Reports say he had previously been threatened by radical Muslim youths and had said he feared for his life.

He is the fourth prominent Muslim cleric to be shot dead in the city since 2012.

The others were accused of links to the al-Qaeda linked Somali Islamist group al-Shabab and their supporters accused the government of being behind their killings – charges the authorities denied.

‘Power struggle’

Mr Idris had apparently urged the police to deal with militant elements at his mosque, leading some to brand him a traitor.

The Kenyan authorities have a fractious relationship with the more radical mosques in Mombasa

“There was a power struggle at Sakina mosque – where he was supposed to be installed as a sheikh – between his supporters and another radical group opposed to him,” Mombasa’s police chief Robert Kitur told the AFP news agency.

According to Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper, those opposed to him wanted to change the mosque’s name from Sakina Jamia to Masjid Mujahedeen, meaning “mosque of Islamist fighters”.

In April, Abubakar Shariff Ahmed, known as Makaburi, who had been listed by the UN as a recruiter for al-Shabab, was shot dead in Mombasa.

Before he died he had said he supported the group’s attack last September on the Westgate shopping centre in the capital, Nairobi, when 67 people died.

His supporters blamed Kenya’s Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) for his killing.

Correspondents say it is not clear whether the ATPU was involved in the shooting but late last year an ATPU officer told the BBC the police had lost faith in the courts and preferred instead to “eliminate” terror suspects.

The Mombasa-based group Muslims for Human Rights has said it fears such methods do not reduce radicalisation, but have the opposite effect.
