Residents of Biadan, a farming community near Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region on Friday were joined by mourners from neighbouring communities to bury nine of their community members who perished in a road accident on the Sunyani-Berekum Highway on May, 13.

Residents and sympathisers in red and black, amid wailing and the singing of dirges bid farewell to their loved ones at the at the joint family funeral programme.

The accident occurred at Amanfoso near Nsoatre when the driver of the Sprinter Bus, lost control of the vehicle when one of its rear tyres burst to cause him to run into a valley.

The bus was returning from Wamahinso in the Asutifi South District after a funeral. The incident left 9 dead and 14 others with various degrees of injuries with some still responding to treatment.

An officer with the Berekum Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service (MTTD), Corporal Kojo Boakye, confirmed the burial process to Citi News, said the presence of the police was to maintain law and order and support their superior and Volta Regional Police Commander ACP Nana Somah who is the chief of the town.

He explained as members of the same family, the family agreed to have the burial service same day and “as we speak now they have all been lined up with their pictures on the coffin awaiting sermons from the clergy and then taken to the cemetery and buried within the same vicinity”.

Kojo Boakye said the death was unprecedented in the history of the MTTD in the area and therefore outlined snap checks, inspection of licenses and alcohol intake levels to help reduce crashes on the road and advised vehicle owners and drivers to regularly service their vehicles.

The Assembly Member for Biadan, Wonder Amo Appau, said the accident had greatly affected the family and community.

The deceased, five males and four females, have been identified as Michael Bediako, Issifu Kramo, Braimah Kramo, Rose Tawiah, 42 and Abenaa Foriwaa.

The rest are Auntie Mary, 75, 42-year old Ataa, Kwasi Gyedu Akakpo, 61, and Afia Charity, 52.
