Four other persons who consumed the meal are reported to be in critical condition.

“After eating Banku, they complained of stomach pains…the father of the children survived and one child, but as to exactly what happened, I’m not in the position to say because the Food and Drugs Authority came for a sample of the food yesterday [Sunday], so we are yet to ascertain whether it is a poison from someone or it was a contaminated food,” he added.

Reports indicate that officials of the FDA spent two hours in the area, and picked samples of the corn dough used in the preparation of the banku to find out what exactly caused the deaths.

The victims were said to be relatives of two separate families.

One dead, 6 others hospitalized after eating poisonous fish

In January 2018, one person died, while six others were hospitalized at Nkonya in the Volta Region  after they reportedly ate meals prepared with puffer fish, which is said to be highly poisonous.

The FDA subsequently urged residents of the area to stop eating such fish to forestall any more deaths.

Naa pleaded not guilty and will reappear on March 13, 2018.

Chief Inspector K. Adu told the court that on February 2, 2018, two Police Officers on duty at the Accra Central Police Station, around 18:00 hours encountered one Patience Abbey who came to the charge office with three balls of Banku and grinded pepper to serve an accused, Nii Ayi, who was on remand.

The Prosecution said when the food was inspected by the Officers on duty they found out that three wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp and a mobile phone concealed in the food.

The Prosecution said Patience was then arrested and detained, during interrogation she mentioned one Naa as the person, who sent her with the food.

Chief Inspector Adu said on February 9, Patience’s husband led the Police to arrest Naa.

The prosecution said Naa stated in her caution statement that Nii’s friend, whose name she does not know but can identify by face, gave her the food to be sent to Nii.

The Police has since sent the exhibits to the Police Forensic laboratory for examination to ascertain the nature of the substances.

The suspect, Ziblila Ibrahim alias Bulubulu is in the grips of the Gushiegu district police command.

The deceased’s uncle, in a Citi News interview, narrated that the duo had a misunderstanding at a banku joint.

“Unexpectedly, the suspect later accosted my nephew on his way home and stabbed him to death at 10 pm last night,” he recounted.

Abdul Salam Yakubu said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Gushegu district hospital morgue.

The family has admonished the police to immediately prosecute the suspect or expect a reprisal attack.

The Police’s rapid response to the crime scene foiled an attempt by some angry community members to set ablaze the suspect’s family house.
