The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has denied speculations within a section of the media that some thumb printed ballots have been found in the Ketu South District of the Volta Region.

The Commission said there is no “iota of truth in the claims” widely circulated on social media.

According to the commission, its preliminary checks showed the information was false and must be disregarded.

Rumours were rife on Saturday that seals to some ballot bags had been broken and thumb printed ballot had been found in the bags.

The Founder of Danquah Institute, and a leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko who made the allegation also added that officials of the Electoral Commission were not cooperating on the matter.

But in a rebuttal, the Electoral Commission (EC) via its Facebook page said, no such thing had happened in the Ketu South constituency.

With almost a week to the country’s general elections on December 7, many people have raised allegations including bloated ballots, broken seals and thumb printed ballots, most of which the EC has denied.

‘Six ballot boxes missing in Western Region’

Meanwhile, six ballot boxes meant for the upcoming polls in the Western Region have gone missing.

This was disclosed by the Takoradi chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The Regional Secretary of the NPP, Charles Cromwell Bissue told Citi News six boxes of a bulk of 44 boxes got missing while being transported from the Western Regional Head Office of the Electoral Commission to the various constituencies.

The Western Regional office of the Electoral Commission confirmed the loss but said the boxes had not been stolen but rather fell along the road from the truck in which they were being transported.

The Electoral Commission via its Facebook page said the missing boxes will be replaced before election day.

The former National Youth Organiser of People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan has emphasized the need for Ghanaians to be vigilant at the polling stations during the December general elections.

Speaking to Citi News’ Norbert Akpabli on the sidelines of a public forum to ensure credible general elections in the Volta Region, Mr. Ramadan asked Ghanaians to devise strategic means to police the ballot boxes during the general elections.

He said the only way to ensure a more credible election is for electorate to be vigilant at the polling stations and make sure that the right processes are adhered to.

He further indicated that it will be unnecessary for Ghanaians to drag the EC to court over the credibility of the voters’ register at this crucial time when the country is preparing for the polls.

“Looking at time, 62 days to election, how long can you drag a case before court before making your point for judges to give judgement before elections?”

“I am looking at the Commission doing the right thing so that on the day of special voting ,we would know the results. We should not have the tradition when the ballot boxes are carried and kept somewhere supposedly and after one week they bring the ballot boxes and come and say this is special voting so we have opened the ballot box and we are now going to count,”he said.

Abu Ramadan who earlier sued the Electoral Commission (EC) over the credibility of the voters’ register said though he intends suing the EC over its reforms, he will go back to court after the polls.

“As for court issues we have not finished. We will come back to court issues after the general election and challenge the cases that have to be challenged but for now let us concentrate on the ballot and how we will police the ballot. We will come back to court after this issue.”
