The Akufo-Addo government has begun the process of establishing a pineapple factory at Ekumfi in the Central Region as part of the “One district, One factory” programme.

The lands and the funds for the establishment of the factory have already been secured, according to the government.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yArxwIvmge36iOPS5k5UQy4nxyk0tyaX”]This is expected to be the first project of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagship “One district, one factory” programme.

Gifty Ohene Konadu, the Coordinating Director of the “One district, One factory” programme, at a durbar of chiefs and people at Ekumfi, noted that “we want the first factory to be built in Ekumfi. If it is approved, we will help the government build it as soon as possible.”

She also said that “we are in talks with some banks, the government itself and even some Chinese investors and they are all excited and ready to start work as soon as possible.”

Nana Addo’s vow to Ekumfi

The late President John Evans Atta Mills was a native of the Ekumfi and President Nana Akufo-Addo vowed to develop the Ekumfi District to honour the late President when he visited the place.

“Before we competed we were brothers. We were in university together. We were even in the same hall together as well. We were friends till the day he died. I have to do something to show that the friendship we had was not for nothing,” the President said the durbar at Ekumfi Essakyir in the Ekumfi District during his tour of the Central Region.

The ‘One District One Factory’ programme is designed to establish at least one viable factory in all 216 districts in Ghana as part of an industrialization drive aimed at providing jobs and transforming the economic fortunes of the country.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has vowed to develop the Ekumfi District of the Central Region to honour late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The President paid a warm tribute to the late President, who was a native of Ekumfi, saying they were Hall mates and friends back at school, just that politics seemed to have separated them.

“Before we competed we were brothers. We were in university together. We were even in the same hall together as well. We were friends till the day he died. I have to do something to show that the friendship we had was not for nothing.”

President Akufo-Addo gave the promise at a durbar at Ekumfi Essakyir in the Ekumfi District, on his second day of his tour in the Central Region.

He has announced his government will make Ekumfi one of its focal points on the development agenda.

The Ekumfi Constituency, formerly the Mfantseman East Constituency, for the first time, voted an NPP parliamentary candidate, Ato Cudjoe, as a member of parliament in the 2016 general elections.

Speaking at the durbar, the Acting President of the Ekumfi Traditional Area, Nana Idun XI, has pledged his area’s support for the President’s developmental agenda.

The Chief has noted lands and other natural resources in the area are readily available for any developmental project in the area.

Indications are that there has been no support from the Akufo-Addo administration towards the commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the death of President John Evans Atta Mills, who was the first Ghanaian Head of State to die in office on July 24, 2012.

In a Citi News interview, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, said he was not aware of any involvement from the government.

[contextly_sidebar id=”h9UO5WxNSHQnVmfnDMbZE5XJMWgr1U4W”]Nonetheless, some friends and associates of Atta Mills will commemorate the anniversary with some activities, starting with a meeting at the Asomdwe park at 8:00am today [Monday], for a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony.

This will be followed by a gathering at the Osu Kuku Hills, where Atta Mills’ office was located, when he was the leader of the NDC prior to his 2008 election victory, for “a gathering of the saints” where sympathizers will “reminisce, pay tribute and find a way of evoking fond memories of the late President of the Republic of Ghana.”

“As far as I am concerned, with regards to the wreath-laying and the Kuku Hills issue, there is no government support. If the government is supporting elsewhere and in any other way, I am not aware. As far as I am concerned, what will happen at Kuku Hills, what will happen at the Asomdwe Park is purely borne out of what we friends and associates of the late president think that we ought to do to remember him,” Mr. Anyidoho said.

Atta Mills had been involved in Ghanaian politics from the time he served as Vice President to President Jerry John Rawlings for one term from 1997 to 2001. He assumed the mantle of flagbearer of the NDC and contested unsuccessfully for the presidency on two occasions before emerging victorious in 2008 after defeating the New Patriotic Party’s candidate and current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in a run-off.

Tragedy struck on July 24, 2012, when Atta Mills died at the 37 Military Hospital aged 68.

He had reportedly been battling with throat cancer, and in the days leading up to his death, had been in the US for some medical attention.

The Deputy General-Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has shed some light on his relationship with former President John Mahama, saying it was mostly borne out of a call to duty.

Mr. Anyidoho was however known to have a very warm relationship with John Mahama’s predecessor, John Evans Atta Mills, which stretched beyond compulsion, according to the NDC Deputy General-Secretary.

In an appearance on Accra-based GHOne TV’s current affairs programme, State of Affairs, Mr. Anyidoho, who once worked as the spokesperson of John Atta Mills’, reiterated his dedication to the late President, who he said he loved.

“I will never regret working for him… President Mills, I salute you in your grave. Nobody will take that away from me,” he declared.

When prodded with a line of questioning on whether that love translated to John Mahama, Mr. Anyidoho simply implied that his relationship with Mr. Mahama was merely an obligatory working relationship, noting that love was “conditional”.

He stated that, he loved the NDC as a party and that “leadership will rotate” adding that “I loved President Mills; I worked for President Mahama.”

Tragedy struck Ghana on July 24, 2012, when John Atta Mills became the first President to die in office. He died at the 37 Military Hospital aged 68.

He had reportedly been battling with throat cancer, and in the days leading up to his death, had been in the US for some medical attention.

In line with Ghana’s constitution, John Mahama, who was the Vice-President, took the oath of office as Head of State before parliament hours after the announcement of Mills’ death.

John Mahama served as the caretaker President until the scheduled elections at the end of 2012, where he went on to stand on the ticket of the NDC, and defeated the opposition New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

John Mahama would govern for the next four years, but lose the 2016 election to the Nana Akufo-Addo, who made his third attempt at the Presidency.
