The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly (AMMA), in the Ashanti Region, has pledged an effective partnership with the Business Advisory Center (BAC), to equip the youth with requisite skills and support them with seed capital to set up businesses.

This according to the Assembly will boost the socio-economic activities of the municipality, and reduce the rising unemployment amongst the youth.

Chief Executive of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, said this at a ceremony to graduate 112 youth who were taken through a five-day skills training in soap making, batik tie and dye production, leather works, baking and confectionery making.

He said the Assembly will soon role out similar skills enhancement programs to train the youth in mobile phone repairs, tailoring, hair dressing and many others.

He indicated that, the development of the youth within the municipality was key to the Assembly, and efforts are underway to provide the needed support to help the youth contribute their quota to national development.

Alhaji Seidu also announced that the Assembly will set up a Vocational Training Center which will be equipped with the needed facilities by the Rural Enterprises Programme to train women, the vulnerable, the disabled and the entire youth within the municipality.

“I have special interest in BAC, and with the Management of Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, we will continue to support the BAC in its quest to develop and promote enterprises as well as our youth in the Municipality.”

The Chief Executive advised the youth to work hard, and take advantage of opportunities the Assembly was providing for them.

He further said the Nana Akufo-Addo administration was also focused in enhancing the skills and capacities of Ghanaian youth to improve their lives.

Head of Business Advisory Centre (BAC) at the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly (AMMA), Agyapong Aikins, mentioned that the training cost GHC 18,000 with the Rural Enterprise absorbing Ghc 13,580, and the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly contributing Ghc 4,420.

Out of the 112 participants, 18 were men and the rest women.

The Asokore-Mampong Municipality has been recording poor immunization coverage – ranked the lowest nationwide.

In year 2014, it achieved 26 percent coverage, rising to 64.3 percent the following year, and hit 76.7 percent in 2016.

Mr. Christopher Dapaah, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health, said a combination of factors – ignorance, misconception, socio-cultural beliefs and practices were to blame.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QkTEnsFhvmzvhirFi9HFLuVXp9hReFjm”]Added to these, he noted, was the inadequate health facilities and personnel in the area.

He said he was, however, encouraged by the last year’s immunization figures, and expressed optimism that with vigorous education campaign by the Coalition, the assembly and the Ghana Heath Service, the 95 percent target set for the year could be within reach.

Mr. Dapaah was addressing a health forum on immunization held at the Aboabo Post Office on Wednesday when he made the remark.

He touched on a number of interventions put in place by the Coalition with support from the Muslim Family Counselling services and Resource Link Foundation to help everybody to appreciate the need to vaccinate children against the killer diseases.

He said satellite immunization centres had been set up and the municipal health directorate supported with logistics to reach out to every child.

The forum was organized by the Coalition together with the assembly and GHS, as part of activities to mark this year’s Immunization Week.

“Vaccines work”, is the theme chosen for the event organized annually to highlight the importance of immunization.

The goal is to significantly reduce vaccine-preventable diseases by year 2020 in line with the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), a programme, which has been endorsed by 194 member states of the World Health Assembly.

Mr. Dapaah pointed out that cases of tuberculosis, hepatitis ‘B’, measles, maternal and neonatal tetanus alongside poliomyelitis and diphtheria could be minimized through immunization.

Mr. Justice Ofori Amoah, the Municipal Health Director, pledged to continue to work hard to increase the immunization coverage.

Ustaz Ahmed Seidu, Executive-Secretary of the Council of Ulama and Imams, said vaccination was critical to the achievement of the sustainable development goals.

Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh was the “head tutor” of the SpriteBall Basketball clinic organised in Accra and Cape Coast on Friday and Saturday 12 and 13th July, 2014.

The player was in Ghana as part of NBA Africa’s partnership with NBA Africa, Coca Cola and the Ghana Basketball Association and held sessions with a number of  teenagers from some senior high schools. The session in Accra was held at the Aviation Social Centre while the one in the Central Region was held at the Adisadel College.

Speaking at the event, Bosh expressed his delight at being in Ghana and sharing his experience with the teenagers.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Ghana Basketball Association, Sprite, NBA Africa for giving me the opportunity to come here. I did not get such an opportunity to be spoken by an NBA star but you here are very lucky to have this chance. You have a special opportunity to play this game.

You have the potential to be very good basketball players and that is good. Basketball is the best game in the world and you must love it and practise very hard. Basketball can do so many great things for you. Never be afraid to dream.

He continued to explain how basketball had opened the door for him to a better life.

“As I was growing in the game, my father told me of how basketball could get me to college and all. It blew my mind knowing that basketball could give me access to one of the best schools in the United States.

I went to Georgia Tech to get some good education and that was possible because of basketball. I got drafted into the NBA after just a year and that was a dream-come-true but I kept working hard on my game and that has brought me to you today.”

CEO of Rite Multimedia, organisers of the SpriteBall Basketball Clinic, Yaw Sakyi told Citi Sports he was pleased with the presence of Bosh and that the clinic had been a success and hoped for bigger initiatives in the near future with NBA Africa and Sprite.

Bosh was not the only professional basketball star at the clinic because he was joined by Ghanaian-British professional basketball player Dzaflo Larkai.

Larkai, who plays in Japan with Sendai 89ers and has won the Japanese basketball league three times, told Citi Sports that he was impressed with the skill levels of the teenagers at the clinic and explained that with enough hard work, Ghanaian basketball players could be heading to the big time.

“The guys are very receptive and very willing to learn. That is the way to success in all areas. if you are willing to learn from those who have the experience, you will go far.

They have the talent and for them to go far, it will take a lot of dedication and hard work. They must also seek to stand out from the crowd and be willing to put themselves out there in the public by sending videos to coaches and teams all around. That could be the key to the huge break.”

Aside the skill-learning techniques and drills, the selected players also took part in a slam dunk competition and a three-point contest to test their abilities and entertain the crowds that had gathered at the venue.
