The Ministry of Health has urged the public to be calm following the death of a 26-year-old man from Lassa fever last week.

The deceased was on admission at the Tema General Hospital with general body weakness, severe headaches and profuse vomiting of blood clots.

[contextly_sidebar id=”kBTBKzR8vQrND3oXW3E5eo1xZmrdjzHE”]Prior to his admission, he was said to have traveled through the Eastern, Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions but finally settled at Ashaiman for about a month.

Head of Public Relations Unit at the Ghana Health Service, Rebecca Ackwuonu, told Citi News the Ministry of Health is mounting a strict surveillance on people the deceased came into contact with prior to his brief stay at the Tema General Hospital.

“He settled in Ashaiman for about a month trying to look for a job, and the incubation is between two and twenty-one days, so we are limiting it to Tema and Ashaiman, and we have started contacting people already, our surveillance department is doing that now,” she said.

The Ministry said it has already supervised the burial of the deceased.

Ghana was alerted of the disease recently following an outbreak in Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO), has said it is teaming up with national and international health agencies to tackle what has been noted to be the country’s biggest outbreak.

The latest figures show 1,081 suspected cases of the disease, including 90 deaths.

This number is more than the 305 cases reported all of last year in Nigeria.

Authorities of the Ghana Health Service have told Citi News they are currently in a meeting to find a solution to the outbreak.

General information on Lass fever

Lassa fever is an Acute Viral Haemorrhagic Fever illness which is endemic in West Africa. The incubation period is 6-21 days.

The onset of the fever has non-specific signs and symptoms but fever, general weakness and malaise have been noted in its early stages.

This is followed by headaches, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pains.

Severe cases may progress to show facial swelling, and bleeding.

Shock, seizures, disorientation, and coma may be seen in the late stages.

About 80 % of Lassa Fever infections are mild or asymptomatic.

WHO has said the best way to prevent the disease is by promoting good community hygiene to discourage rodents that spread the disease from entering homes.

Some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in the Ashaiman constituency, are threatening to vote against President Mahama if he fails to visit the constituency before the December 7 polls.

According to the youth group,  known as NDC Asanka Crackers, despite the fact that the Ashaiman constituency is the fourth largest constituency with the highest voter population in the country, the President has failed to show them some appreciation for their loyalty to the NDC..

The anger of the supporters in the constituency stems from the fact that the President has failed to visit the constituency since he begun his campaign tour.

The angry NDC supporters on Wednesday afternoon protested at one of their meeting grounds and threatened to vote ‘skirt and blouse’, and also campaign against the President should he not rescind his decision of not visiting the constituency ahead of the December polls.

“We are not happy with the way the President is handling us in Ashaiman. He has decided to deliberately avoid visiting the Ashaiman constituency because he thinks it is a safe haven for him; but if care is not taken, we shall show him that the people of Ashaiman cannot be taken for granted” they stated

They youth continued that “how can we be voting for the NDC every election year and the President instead of appreciating us by at least paying us a visit and sharing his plans with us; is playing games with us. We shall show him where the power lies by voting against him or at best stay home without stepping out in our numbers to vote.”

The angry supporters noted that, the President’s visit to the Ashaiman constituency has been cancelled thrice.

“Our NPP brothers are always teasing us that we are being used and dumped by the NDC; and this attitude by the President only confirms what our NPP brothers are saying, and we feel it is highly disrespectful to the over eighty thousand NDC supporters in Ashaiman.”

They added that, “the NPP’s Presidential candidate has visited the constituency twice, and this is turning the ground into their favour so it is important John Mahama also comes to Ashaiman to stir up the fire in our members.”

“If he fails to come, it will affect our quest to give the party 85 thousand votes, and he [President] should not blame us when this happens.”

However the Deputy constituency campaign coordinator for the NDC, Godwin Tsimese, who rushed to the meeting grounds of the youth to calm tempers down, said the party though is worried about the President’s inability to visit the constituency, it is not enough justification for the youth to be worried.

“Inasmuch as we share in the frustration and disappointment of our party faithfuls over the President’s inability to visit us due to his tight schedule, we still believe there is the need for our party people to exercise restraint in their dealings.”

Mr. Tsimese said the party’s hierarchy in the constituency, is still in touch with the President’s protocol team to try and work something out.

“It is early days yet for our people to worry, we are working out with the President’s protocol team to work something out to ensure that smiles are put on the faces of our people” Mr. Tsimese noted.

He urged the party supporters to exercise restraint and have faith in the party and President Mahama as their problems would be addressed.

He assured that the agenda 85 thousand votes as targetted by the NDC is still on course, as the party is doing everything possible within its powers to ensure it is achieved in the Ashaiman constituency.

Members of the Commercial Drivers and Residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, are demanding the immediate removal of their Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ibrahim Baidoo.

According to them, the MCE has failed to bring the needed development to the area. Some of the drivers who spoke to Citi News have indicated that they are unhappy about his continuous stay in office.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1v2wOLXrKtORECvwTMXgJeEyyvDtBHsK”]Some of them have thus called on President John Dramani Mahama to sack the MCE for reasons ranging from alleged mismanagement of funds and developmental neglect.

Despite Ashiaman being a stronghold of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), some of the residents have vowed to vote against President Mahama if he does not heed their calls.

Speaking to Citi News, one of the residents said, “can you imagine assembly rented a building to the national investment bank; 10.5 billion old currency and we don’t know what the money was used for; so we are calling on President Mahama to sack him or else we will vote against him.”

Some of the residents acknowledged the government’s hand in some developmental projects in the area;  but insisted that the MCE be sacked to prove government’s commitment.

“President Mahama, we know that he has helped we the drivers  in Ashiaman because he constructed a highway; but the Ashiaman-Lebanon and other roads are so bad, so we are calling on President Mahama to remove the MCE. If not, we will vote against him,” a driver stated.

“The MCE is not working. He is chopping the money just like that. Come and see our roads – potholes. The President has to know this; we are paying tax for it,” another incensed resident said.
