The Ashanti Regional Police Command has said the 25-year-old who was shot and killed by a police officer at Kenyasi-Bosore in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region was part of some rampaging youth in the area who attacked the officer on duty.

According to a police statement, the deceased was shot after he drew a gun and pointed it at the officer.

The police released the statement detailing the sequence of events that led to the shooting after the family of Derrick Osei Frimpong demanded justice and called on them to investigate the shooting of their son by a police officer.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bS6UykKiKueY8JCVL0vheu6yNFQBnMpb”]The family asked the regional police command to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of the deceased.

The Command, in the statement, said the police officer stationed at the Regional headquarters was attacked while on lawful duty at the Dumgya Komfo’s shrine at Bosore.

The statement indicated that the police officer had intervened to maintain order after about 12 men went to the shrine to attack another man.

The officer, in the ensuing melee, seized a bag from one Musah Adams who was part of the mob.

A search in the backpack revealed 7 sachets of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, a screwdriver, ‘shisha’, a Techno Mobile phone and a pair of sandals.

The statement added that the actions of the officer infuriated the attackers who tried to disarm him.

According to the statement, the police officer, sensing that his life was in immediate danger fired a warning shot to disperse the crowd massing up around him.

The attackers who were agitated by the gunshot tried to snatch the officer’s A.K 47 assault rifle and pelted stones at him.

The police added that the deceased, Osei Frimpong, drew a locally made pistol and pointed it at the policeman, prompting the officer to shoot him.

He was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Twelve other suspects who were arrested in the process have since been granted bail.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been summoned to the Flagstaff House to explain circumstances under which a pro-NPP vigilante group, “Delta Force” hounded the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator out of his office.

Citi News’ sources at the Flagstaff House say the group’s action was a clear disrespect to the President who appointed George Agyei as the Security Coordinator for the region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MPK0ysdmAu14HCFzuQ7OWInN25tgj95N”]Chairman Wontumi is believed to have links with some members of the pro-NPP group which operates in the region.

Already, the Police in Kumasi have arrested five members of the Delta Force.

The five include Kwadwo Fosu Bamba, who is the Commander of the group, Awal Sadat Abubakar, Abubakar Sadiq Abdul Hameed, Jamil Issah and Hamza Mohammed.

Background

The angry Delta Force group stormed the premises of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council last Friday, demanding the removal of the Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei.

They destroyed some properties in a bloody attack and forced the Security Coordinator out of his office.

The Security Coordinator was however saved by the timely intervention of the police. According to the group, they cannot work with the security coordinator, who they claim contributing nothing to the party’s victory.

Delta Force begs for forgiveness

The organizer of the Delta Force, Kwadwo Bamba, has subsequently apologized to President Nana Akufo-Addo and members of the party for the assault on George Agyei.

“We are begging the President… we are waiting for anything the President will say. We are ready to obey our President. I feel bad about the whole incident and I wish it will not happen again,” he assured.

Delta Force attacks require national security involvement

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sam Pyne, had earlier said the development required national security involvement, rather than party leadership since the victim of the attack was a government appointee.

“It is not a party matter because it is not a party appointment. The person was appointed by the president to work for the nation Ghana. He wasn’t appointed to be an NPP officer. The group that went there was not authorized by the party to do that. The national security that is supposed to deal with that matter should deal with it. I condemn that action by the group, but national security should take it up. I’m going to have a discussion with leaders of the group and also the Regional Security Council are going to meet on that too,” he added.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has expressed its frustration with the attitude of some of the New Patriotic Party supporters who besieged the regional police command on Monday morning.

This was after, Police in Kumasi had taken possession of three bags stuffed with materials reported to be thumb-printed presidential ballot papers found at the Madison lodge  at TUC in the Ashanti Regional capital.

All the retrieved ballot papers had thumb prints for President John Mahama, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing the press after the incident the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye condemned the actions of the supporters as he recounted that this was the latest in a number of allegations ahead of the December 7 elections.

He narrated that, “last week, there were allegations of weapons, we followed up and we didn’t have any tangible evidence to support it. They followed it up with an allegation against a policewoman that she is hoarding weapons.”

“The police led us to them to show us the place. They showed us the place, together they all went through the rooms and there was nothing.”

“This morning, the same allegations that there are printed ballot papers somewhere, police graciously went with them, we found these ballot papers.”

But it was subsequently confirmed by the Electoral Commission that the confiscated thump-printed ballot papers were fake.

Describing the behaviour of the supporters as unruly, COP Boakye accused their regional leaders of instigating besieging the police command by the supporters.

“This behavior here now, if we want to act commensurately, it will result in allegations are harassing some party or the other… This is unnecessary, irresponsible and shouldn’t happen. We are by this warning everybody that the fact that we have elections doesn’t mean that the rules, criminal laws and other things have been abdicated,” COP Boakye stated.
