The Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun processes to move its personnel stationed at offices in various units and departments to join the patrol teams.

The move according to the command is part of measures to augment the number of personnel on patrols and also intensify the fight against crime in the region following recent robbery incidents in the Greater Accra Region.

The command said there has been a massive decline in crime cases in the region between 2016 and 2017.

In 2016, the region recorded a total of 35,340 crime cases and 33,074 for the year 2017 with the difference in decline representing 6.4%.

Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng, who disclosed this to Citi News said the command has put in place further measures to avert robbery cases as being recorded in Accra and Tema Regions.

“Some of these measures includes the fact that we are looking at the situation where we would have to engage the services of personnel working in the offices. By this I mean to say that, for some offices we do know that for now we can manage with probably one or two persons in an office. So if we move into that office and we realize that they are more than one or two persons who can manage their affair at this time,  then we will move the third, fourth, fifth person to join the patrol team”, she revealed.

She said the command will also add to the fleet of vehicles provided by Government to improve on the movement of the personnel who go for patrols.

ASP Obeng indicated that the command will soon meet heads of financial institutions and other key businesses within the region to educate them on how they can focus more on their security and not only concentrating on their activities.

The command, she added will continue its engagement with the citizenry to get them understand basic security tips and how they can manage their personal security.

As part of the measures, ASP Obeng said the command has met Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Ashanti Region and appealed to them to improve on the road networks in their areas to help the police respond to distress calls swiftly.

Police at the Airport District Command in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have recaptured a fugitive, who was amongst some inmates who escaped from lawful custody some four years ago.

The escapee, 20-year-old Alex Boakye Ansah, was recaptured when the Airport Patrol Team spotted him at Dichemso, a suburb of the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Airport District Commander, Superintendent Iddrisu Abdulai, told Citi News the suspect would soon be put before the court.

“We’ll still prosecute him for the offense that he committed prior to his escape, and he has actually escaped from lawful custody so that one too is a count; a fresh charge that will be leveled against him. He is being prepared for court,” he said.

He added that, “his escape led to the reduction of the rank of about two of my personnel, so we think that it is not a case that we should joke with. We are going to take it seriously but allow the law take its course.”

According to the Police, the suspect claims one of his colleague escapees, Suraj Salim, died on his way to Libya, but he has no knowledge on the whereabouts of the other escapee, Jones Anane Akpaloo.

The three broke through the wooden ceiling of the Asawase police station cell at about 12 midnight on 17th August 2014, where they were being kept, pending their trial for various criminal offenses.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned Mobile Money merchants and business owners to be wary of a gang of criminals targeting their businesses within the Kumasi metropolis.

This comes after some unknown men launched series of attacks on mobile money merchants in the country.

The most recent one resulted in the killing of a 31-year old operator at Kronom-Kyeraasi in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CUb7nuMXN4kbGX4VdicrBU6YUTwJ2oSM”]The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Director, ASP Juliana Obeng, told the media that the Service is making frantic efforts to arrest the gang.

“It was necessary that we caution the general public to be alert and cautious of their area of operation to make sure that monies that are collected at a certain period will be taken to the bank before close of day instead of waiting for close of day before they take their monies to the bank, and then again they should alert the police of unsuspecting characters seen or found around. Honestly, we are not just talking about mobile money merchants but we also went ahead to alert shop owners and business people as well,” she added.

Vendors appeal for protection

Current figures show that mobile money agents increased from 136,000 in 2016 to 194,000 in 2017.

They have subsequently appealed for security following attacks on some agents.

‘We can’t protect every Mobile Money joint’

The Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP George Alex Mensah, had earlier stated that it was impossible for his outfit to provide adequate security for every mobile money business in the capital Accra, due to what he described as the alarming rise in the number of operators.

According to him, it will be difficult for the Police Service, with its limited numbers to man all the mobile money points.

“They spring out at any corner and these armed robbers are just making meat out of them so it is a worry for the Police Service… We have scheduled a meeting with the telecom if we can discuss how best we can at least make sure anybody who is going to set up this money business will have a secure environment. Some of these are even operating on bicycles and these are easy prey for armed robbers,” he added.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has said that an autopsy conducted on a 33-year-old female tutor at the Kumasi Girls Senior High School indicated that she died by hanging.

This revelation from the Police came after relatives of Vida Frema Bonsu had expressed doubt about earlier reports indicating that she had committed suicide, and demanded further investigations into the cause of her death.

According to the deceased woman’s father, Nana Bonsu, the family suspects foul play following circumstances that led to her death.

The deceased was on Monday, January 29, 2018 found dead in the room of her police boyfriend, Sergeant Bright Opoku, an officer with the Konongo Divisional Police Command in the Asante Akyem Central District of the Ashanti Region.

Reports indicate that the deceased was found in blue knickers and a white vest hanged with a police lanyard and tied to one of the burglar proofs when police arrived at the scene.

There are also claims that a laceration was seen on the lower arm and a blood stained knife was found in one corner of the room.

The body was conveyed to the Steward Hospital for preservation and an autopsy.

A statement signed by Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Fred Adu Anim indicated that “an autopsy report has indicated that cause of death as hanging”.

The statement also added that some stomach content from the deceased has been given to the Ghana Standard Authority for analytical tests since there was an indication that the deceased might have ingested some poison before hanging herself.

Meanwhile the Police Officer who was arrested in connection with the death has been granted bail.
