A member of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, has condemned the Criminal Investigations Department’s (CID) invitation of the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho.

Anyidoho was invited by the CID after making comments deemed treasonable.

Mr. Anyidoho in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM had indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SUscWZe8uWwfsMLurvJxj1vPx9WGNnqE”]“Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection that removed the progress party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo Addo’s father was the ceremonial President. Someone should tell Akufo-Addo that history has an interesting way of repeating itself,” Anyidoho warned.

Mr. Mensah in an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, said the reaction to the comments were needless.

“When the Minister of Finance during the opposition indicated that Ghana was ripe for a political coup d’etat, did we arrest him? We need to demonstrate some political tolerance in this country. What is happening is not fair. It is not proper. We are generating too much tension in this country. It does not serve the interest of any political party. It does not serve the interest of the opposition, it does not serve the interest of those in government. Tolerance is key in politics. This thing is being carried too far. It is being overstretched.”

Mr. Mensah believes the CID’s invitation was needless, since it was obvious “Koku Anyidoho is not planning a coup.”

“The General Secretary has dissociated the party from the general perception that Koku Anyidoho had made a statement to the effect that there will be a military coup. The issues are being overstretched.”

NPP condemns Anyidoho’s comments

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party, NPP, has described Mr. Anyidoho’s comments as reckless and amateurish.

“The NPP as a party unreservedly condemns this reckless, amateurish, and misguided statement from Mr. Anyidoho, especially judging from his background as a former presidential spokesperson for former President John Evans Atta Mills, who was hailed by all as a peace-loving personality,” a statement signed by National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku added.

Former COCOBOD boss, Dr. Stephen Opuni, will make his first appearance in court today [Monday], for among others allegedly causing financial loss to the state in a fertilizer supply deal.

Dr. Opuni and Siedu Agongo, the CEO of Zeera Group of Companies and Agricult Ghana, which also belongs to Seidu Agongo, are cumulatively facing some 27 charges, including abetment of crime and conspiracy to commit crime.

[contextly_sidebar id=”YlbiuSdbE29jlNFFR4zmpJ9Hi6XcinM8″]Some key National Democratic Congress executives and the family of Dr. Opuni have described his prosecution as witch hunting, indicating their preparedness to stand by him.

The Attorney General about two weeks filed the 27 counts including a charge of causing financial loss to the state.

Seidu Agongo, CEO of Zeera Group of Companies and Agricult Ghana Limited, is said to have been a beneficiary of a supposed fraudulent fertilizer contract worth over GH¢43 million.

The National Organizer of the NDC, Kofi Adams, has described the prosecution of the former COCOBOD boss as injustice.

He said the government is only making frantic efforts to cause public disaffection towards the previous NDC administration by smearing former state officials with allegations of corruption and initiating legal action against them for same, although its own officials have been cited for various acts of corruption.

A former NDC Member of Parliament for North Dayi, George Loh, has advised the state to be fair in dealing with Mr. Opuni to ensure he is not persecuted.

“All I’m saying in simple terms is that, when people have done wrong in this country, they must be prosecuted, but not persecuted,” he told the host of The Big Issue, Selorm Adonoo on Saturday.

Police also retrieved 48 boxes of the suspected harmful alcoholic drinks at his Ejisu residence.

The suspected harmful alcoholic products included; Black Label, Red Label, Barcadi, Lion Aromatic Schnapps and Smirnoff.

Others included Lord Jack, Lord Kingsley, Sir Edwards, Bony Black and other assorted alcoholic products.

Police investigations also revealed that the suspect rented an apartment at Ejisu near Anita Hotel junction to produce the products after he was denied the license.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah, said the suspect disclosed that the composition of the drinks are Ethanol, water and color, while he used disposed bottles in the packaging of the products.

Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, says three persons have been arrested for their alleged roles in three separate robbery incidents by a gang of 4 armed men in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, he said the arrest was made after an identification parade, during which the three were identified by eight victims of the robberies.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TrHDVH1B66Z1czh7VJ3ymrIHxXcC7vtK”]“We have arrested the three of those most wanted and notorious armed robbers who are in our custody now. On Tuesday we conducted an ID parade and almost all eight victims identified them as the persons who attacked them,” he said.

He says the victims and other members of the public are assisting the police with further information to enable them prosecute the suspects.

He mentioned that in their attempt to make the people of Koforidua safe, they have divided the municipality into four zones for quick responses. He says they have intensified their intelligence based systems.

“we have zoned the municipality into four zones, recently the police administration gave us three additional vehicles for operational purpose and in addition to the vehicles we have now, we have been able to zone the municipality, so that at any point in time, based on the where the robbery is, we can quickly respond to the crime scene,” he said.

During the three separate robberies by the armed gang of four, victims were subjected to severe beatings, during which a family were robbed of their wedding rings, television sets, jewellery, laptops, footwear, clothes and foodstuffs.

‘We’re ready to die’

Despite these attacks some of which have also been recorded in Accra and Tema, the Director of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Akufo Dampare has said although his outfit is logistically deficient, they are ready to put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of every Ghanaian.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Dampare also noted that the support of the citizens will go a long way to help the Police Service combat the increasing rate of crime in the country.

“We want to give them [citizens] the assurance that we will go every length, including losing our lives to make them safe. We understand that we are not there yet, in terms of the full complement of our equipment. We also understand that over the years, government after government has made an attempt to bring us to a particular level in terms of equipment,” he said.

A 63-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly selling his nine-year-old grandchild for GH¢100,000 at Osu in Accra.

The man, Medaho Agbodzi, claimed he did not have money to take care of the little girl, as he was responsible for 10 more children, including his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, said the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the CID gathered intelligence that a man was offering his nine-year-old granddaughter for sale on February 22, 2018.

Immediately, she said officers from the unit mounted surveillance on Agbodzi, while he was contacted by a man who had expressed interest in the sale of the girl.

The two men negotiated the price and settled on GH¢100,000 and they agreed to meet at a location at Osu to seal the deal.

Unknown to Agbodzi, the buyer had informed the police about the transaction and they laid ambush for him.

The police arrested Agbodzi as he handed over the girl to the buyer and took possession of the money.

No money

Mrs Addo-Danquah said further information gathered by the police indicated that the victim lived with her maternal grand-aunt in the Volta Region.

The grand-aunt is said to have demanded GH¢50 from Agbodzi to enable her to buy the victim’s school uniform and other material needs.

When Agbodzi could not provide the money, the grand-aunt became angry and handed over the girl to him.

Agbodzi told the police that the girl’s father absconded when he impregnated his (Agbodzi’s) daughter.

The victim has since been sent to a shelter, while the police continue to investigate the case.

The Sunyani Magistrate Court “A” has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Martin K. Delleh, Chief Executive Officer of DKM Diamond Micro Finance and four others for defrauding over 5000 people of billions of Ghana Cedis at Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Suspects are to appear before the Court presided over by Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan on the 21st February 2018 on charges of “defrauding by false pretenses”.

The other four are Aziz Abdalla Achulowor, Amadu Ibrahim, Richard Zawi and Juliana K. Delleh all executive members of Care for Humanity Fun Club International, based in New Jersey in the United States of America but with a branch at Nkoranza.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector John Amaning Kwakye, told the court that complainants in the case were clients of Care for Humanity, a micro finance company.

He said in 2015, the accused made false representations on radio stations at Nkoranza that they were operating a micro finance business that yielded 60 per cent interest on cash deposits for a period of two months.

The prosecution said accused misrepresentations attracted over 5000 people including the complainants and each deposited various sums of monies ranging between GHC500.00 and GHC500,000.00 with the company.

He said after the maturity of the investments, the accused failed to pay the principal sums and the corresponding interest to the complainants.

The prosecution said when complainants visited the company’s offices at Nkoranza they observed that the offices had been closed down and none of the workers were present.

He said complainants then reported the matter to the Police and after investigations suspects were charged with the offence to appear before the Court.

DKM Diamond Micro Finance is a defunct micro finance company.

It would be recalled that in 2015 the Bank of Ghana (BoG) suspended the operations of the above two companies (DKM and Care for Humanity) and some others for flouting the rules governing the operations of micro-finance business in the country.

The action revealed loss of cash deposits by thousands of Ghanaians who had invested in those companies.

An unemployed man, Alidu Mohammed, who is accused of robbing a Japanese Public Health Nurse and a Caterer of their mobile phones and money at Dzorwulu has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Mohammed was arrested when a tracking device in one of the mobile phones led the Police to his hideout.

The Police are on the hunt for his accomplice, known as Yusif, who is currently at large.

Mohammed pleaded not guilty to two counts of robbery when he appeared before the court.

The court, presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, remanded him into prison custody to reappear on February 15.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo said the first complainant Hitomi Suzuki is a Public Health nurse with the Jirapa Health Directorate and Bridgette Adjebu, the second complainant is a caterer residing at Abelemkpe while Mohammed resides at Maamobi in Accra.

He narrated that on January 30, this year, Suzuki in the company of Allen Jiang, a witness in the case, requested for Uber taxi services.

The prosecution said while they were waiting for the car, Mohammed and Yusif, riding an unregistered motorbike spotted them, pulled up by their side, drew out a knife and another sharp implement with which they threatened them and snatched Suzuki’s small waist bag and bolted.

The bag contained one Infinix mobile worth GH¢ 300, 100 Dilham Dubai bills and two Identity Cards.

The Prosecution said when the Uber taxi eventually arrived at the scene they drove to the Dzorwulu Police Post and lodged a complaint.

According to prosecution Mohammed and his accomplice, Yusif had also robbed several people including Bridgette around the same time.

The prosecution said with the help of the tracking device, the Police traced Mohammed and his accomplice and chased them towards East Legon but on reaching the Ghana Standard Authority near Okponglo, Mohammed and Yusif fell off their motorbike.

They then took to their heels with the officers in pursuit.

The prosecution said the tracking device in the mobile phone led the Police to an uncompleted house where Mohammed had sought refuge and was picked up.

When Mohammed was searched, three mobile phones were found in his possession and including Suzuki’s handbag, GH¢ 18.50, 55 Dirham’s Dubai and the two ID cards.
