The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced three armed robbers who attempted to rob a filling station at Abenkyim, near Anwiankwanta in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, to a total of 47 years’ imprisonment.

Samuel Agyekum, 18, Boakye Ansah, 24 and Innocent Amoako aka Stonky, 19, pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and possession of a firearm and three kitchen knives at the Abenkyim branch of Petro Bay Filling Station on March 8, this year.

Boakye Ansah, who was said to be the ringleader of the gang, was slapped with a 17-year jail term, while Samuel Agyekum and Innocent Amoako were each sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in hard labour.

They were arrested on Thursday, March 8, 2018 by a police patrol team following a hot chase after the foiled robbery attempt.

Prosecutor, DSP Edward Obeng Boateng, told the court that the convicts met at Dominase in the Bekwai Municipality to hatch the plan after receiving information that the branch manager could not deposit the day’s sales at the bank.

He narrated that the gangsters, who were in balaclavas, eventually hired a taxi at Trede to carry out the operation.

The convicts told the cabbie that they were air-conditioner technicians contracted to work at Petrol Bay Filling Station, prosecutor disclosed.

DSP Boateng revealed that Boakye Ansah, a former worker of the filling station who was conversant with the place, immediately asked Innocent Amoako to change his clothes and proceed to the office under the pretext of looking for a place to attend nature’s call, which he did.

According to him, Boakye Ansah led Samuel Agyekum into the station manager’s office, while Innocent also monitored events with a pistol at the bay.

“The convicts retreated when they discovered that the manager was not in his office and quickly ran into the waiting taxi en route to Anwiankwanta,” he stated.

Unknown to the gang, a witness in the case, who is a friend of one of the convicts, alerted residents of Anwiankwanta who subsequently relayed the information to the police.

They were arrested at Anwiankwanta after the inhabitants blocked the road to prevent their (gang) escape.

A search conducted in the taxi revealed a pistol, three kitchen knives, a mask and gloves.

They were charged and arraigned before court after police investigations.

The police in Asante-Mampong have arrested and detained one person in connection with the robbery attack on the Total Fuel Station at Bosofour.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) James Nyadedjur, the Mampong Divisional Commander, confirmed this to journalists but would not give the name of the suspect, citing security reasons.

He would also not provide any other details except to say that the man was assisting in their investigations.

Gun-wielding robbers, numbering four, had raided the fuel station on Friday, March 02, and amid firing of gunshots made away with an unspecified amount of money.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6olWoYR5ZZKgWBIlM0z8PhF0YR5zJKA8″]They seized mobile phones of the attendants and were reported to have struck at about 1830 hours.

Whilst escaping with their booty, they also attacked a mobile money vendor and forcibly took everything she had on her.

The Police had earlier said the robbers made away with a total of GHc12,000.

“On 02/03/18 at 1845hrs,four suspected armed robbers with three wielding short guns and one holding a stick attacked the above station (.) They first escorted the mobile money woman into her office and took all her money amounting to about 3000 Ghana cedis. They asked of the manager and she pointed at him and he was escorted into the strong room and ordered to open the safe and an amount of about 9000gh was collected,” a statement from the police said.

Although the police said they were called on time to the scene the robbers managed to escape arrest.

“A police patrol had information and rushed to the scene and spotted one of the robbers who positioned himself by the roadside. He immediately fired three shots at the police and wanted to re-load the gun and police returned fire but he managed to run away and joined a waiting taxi cab and fled. The other accomplices also escaped through a bush behind the filling station. Manager Dennis Frimpong sustained a minor injury on the head and was treated and discharged.”

The police said they continued the patrol in the entire enclave and were able to arrest a taxi driver, Inusah Braimah, aged 25, believed to be one of the robbers.

The police in the statement said upon a search, a cash amount of GHc1190 was found on him “and he could not give any tangible source of the money, meanwhile his accomplice who was with him managed to run upon seeing police.”

“Suspect is detained pending identification and further investigation,” the police statement added.

A retired Captain of the Ghana Army, Ebenezer Budu-Koomson, has rubbished arguments against the media showing photos of robbers killed by the police.

According to him, public displays of the Police Service’s successes against the perpetrators of armed robberies will serve as a deterrent to potential offenders while also reassuring the public that the police are in control.

[contextly_sidebar id=”oxbpw8Vb0Wbt4hTHoxWyN1Ne8tgBUfHn”]”When I read this morning that some of those armed robbers who attacked Kwabenya have been gunned down, I had no apologies. For me, an ordinary citizen, it is a reassurance. They came in to kill, the police confront them and overpowered them. Me I will encourage it [displaying the bodies]. When you take the battle to them and you beat them to it… We haven’t lost it. But once you are in reactionary mode, you’ve lost it,” he said.

Capt. Budu-Koomson also asked the Police not to treat the criminals with kid gloves.

He said the police must take the criminals on and launch series of attacks on them at their hideouts to address the spate of robberies in the country.

“I can assure you that these armed robbers are never in the majority. It is a small group. [They have to] be taken on rather with bold actions by the security agencies. You don’t go to them with kid gloves. I will preach for bold actions. Take them on, boot for boot. Take the battle to them. This is war, we should really take the battle to them,” Captain Rtd. Budu-Koomson said on Citi FM’s news analysis program, The Big Issue on Saturday.

Captain Budu-Koomson, who described the recent wave of armed robberies in the country as a war, said citizens will be reassured of their safety if the Police are on the offensive and do not only react after a robbery incident.

There appears to be a heightened wave of robbery attacks in the country in recent months with cases reported in the last week being some of the worst reported.

Most of the incidents show robbers displaying bravado by perpetrating the crimes in broad daylight.

A Lebanese was shot and killed at Tema Industrial Area this week, with the robbers bolting with some GH¢ 200,000 he had cashed from a bank minutes earlier.

Although the Police has given assurances that they are in control of the situation, residents in the communities that have affected by the activities of the robbers say they are living in fear.

But according to Captain Budu-Koomson, the police will be able to overpower the criminals if it gathers enough intelligence and takes bold steps towards addressing the issue.

‘We’ll shoot to kill robbers who engage us’

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has threatened that it will shoot to kill any armed robber who attempts to engage the Police in a gunfight.

Speaking to Citi News after some Police personnel shot and killed two robbers in Accra on Friday, the Regional Commander, DCOP George Alex Mensah said the Service will do all it takes to protect its officers and the citizenry.

Police have arrested two young men who robbed an Israeli business man at East Legon last Friday.

The two are, Sanusi Zido, 18, and Abudu Mohammed, 27. Their arrest was effected after a taxi driver knocked them off their motorbike in an attempt to escape.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NhjiKTAkeX13xLIWy7e9qyCBfwDGAioQ”]They had forced the businessman to open his car and stole his bag which contained about GHs4,000, a mobile phone and some personal documents at knife point.

The suspects subsequently attempted to flee on their motorbike after committing the crime but were knocked down by a taxi driver who chanced on the scene and followed them.

They decided to flee on foot after they fell off the bike but the taxi driver raised alarm which drew people in the area to give the two robbers a hot chase.

Zido and Mohammed were apprehended and beaten by the mob but were rescued by two police officers who arrived at the scene.

They have since been handed over the Accra Regional Police Command.

Phone call

Narrating the event leading to their arrest, she said Zibo and Mohammed followed the victim, who was driving from the direction of the East Legon Police Station towards the American House area.

The victim was said to have parked to receive a phone call with all his car window glasses rolled up.

Mohammed was said to have approached him and knocked on his car window to inform him of a flat tyre.

Mrs Tenge said as soon as the victim got down from his car, Mohammed pulled a knife and threatened to kill him if he refused to open the back seat door of his car where a bag was lying.

She said there were people in the area, who were going about their duties and nobody realised there was a robbery going on until the suspects picked the bag and took to their heels.

Mrs Tenge said the two alleged robbers jumped onto their motorbike, which was parked a few metres away, and sped off.

However, a taxi driver, who chanced on the scene, saw them running away and pursued them.

Mrs Tenge said the taxi driver managed to knock them down and drew the attention of people in the area.

Mohammed and Zibo were then apprehended, beaten and handed over to the police.

Mrs Tenge commended the taxi driver and the young men who helped in arresting the two suspects.

An angry mob lynched three suspects recently at Nator Banori, a village near Nadowli, in the Upper West Region.
The deceased are currently at the Upper West Regional Hospital Morgue in Wa.

Briefing the media in Wa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edward Oduro Kwarteng, the Deputy Upper West Regional Police Commander, said at about 1300 hrs on the eventful day, one Dienuma Kwaku, 45, heard an unusual noise in his room.

He said the complainant then woke up and saw three suspected Fulani men, one of them he could only identify as Puuri and two others, who formerly resided in the same village, armed with two single barrel shot guns and cutlasses busily searching the complainant’s personal effects in the room.

ACP Kwarteng said the complainant upon seeing the suspects raised an alarm causing the culprits to escape from the room.

Later, he claimed he had identified two of the suspects and led four other young men to the houses of the three Fulani men where they were arrested and brought to his house.

The complainant later invited his neighbours to his house and as they were cautioning the suspects, they were also beating them at the same time, the Deputy Upper West Regional Police Commander said.

He said when they saw that the suspects were weak they conveyed them on a tricycle to the Nadowli Police Station where the police quickly rushed them to the hospital and they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The complainant has since been arrested.

In another development, ACP Kwarteng said on 10th July, 2017 at about 2000 hrs, police in Hain received information that some unidentified armed men had blocked the Ulo – Nobre road and were robbing the road users.

He said two police officers namely Sergeant Karim Matari and Constable Christopher Agbeko proceeded to the scene which was about 15kms from Hain.

“As they were going, five young men appeared from the nearby bush flashing them to stop and when they obliged, one of the suspects ordered them to put off the engine while one was walking towards them with a dagger and the rest standing behind with cutlasses”, he said.

ACP Kwarteng said when the Sergeant realized their lives were in danger he fired at the one who was advancing towards them killing him instantly and the rest run into the bush.

He said the deceased was identified as Desmond Danyi alias Naabu, a notorious criminal in Jirapa who was currently standing trial at the Wa Circuit Court for causing unlawful damage.

The four suspects, who escaped into the bush namely Hassan Arieba, 28, Christopher Godwin, 26, Mahamud Jallo, 40, Wellendi Bari, 38, have since been arrested by the police and would soon be put before court.

The Deputy Commander said the police patrol team in Wa also shot and hit the left thigh of one suspect Abdul-Moomin Abubakar after he attempted shooting at the police with his single barrel gun.

He said this happened when the patrol team received information that some armed men had blocked the Jonga – Sombo road and were harassing road users.

Again, in another development, suspect Ibrahim Adams, 33, was arrested and arranged before the Wa Circuit Court presided over by Mr Forson Baah Agyapong, and was remanded into police custody to assist with police investigations into the butchering of Master Harry Amankwa.

Harry Amankwa, a Level 400 student of the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) who received deep cutlass wounds on his shoulder, head and right wrist on July 2, has since been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for further treatment.

The Police Service is on a manhunt for two armed men who shot two officers in broad daylight at Lapaz in Accra.

The criminals were said to be on a robbery mission in the area but shot the policemen  to prevent the officers from thwarting their operation.

Citi News gathered that the incident occurred at about 1 pm around a popular restaurant in the area, Las Palmas.

Some eyewitnesses said the robbers were on a motorbike when they carried out the shooting and subsequently stole a vehicle from a motorist before speeding off towards Kasoa.

The Police Service is yet to formally react to the development. The condition of the shot officers remains unknown.

Barely a month ago, a Policeman believed to be in his 30s was shot dead by two armed men. The officer, Michael Kporye, was shot in the face and in the chest at Tulaku near Michel Camp, in the Greater Accra Region.

Suspected armed robbers have shot and wounded a Police officer at Akwansrem in the Ashanti Region.

A few weeks later, Lance Corporal Kwaku Mensah, who was stationed at Anwiankwanta in the Bekwai Municipality, sustained several gunshot wounds when gunmen attacked a vehicle he was traveling on.

The vehicle was attacked by gun-wielding robbers who attacked the vehicle at about 10 pm.

The Police in Tatale in the Northern Region have begun a manhunt for four armed robbers who raided the town on Sunday.

The robbers killed one person and injured several others during the attack.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Btb990uo57Ftr5zdzxURoA1f3qCY2FJ5″]According to the Police, the assailants, who were six in number invaded the community on motorbikes and shot sporadically while robbing shops at gun point.

The Police who got wind of the incident engaged the robbers in a shootout that led to two of the robbers being killed while the remaining four fled.

The Northern Regional Police commander, ACP Adusei Sarpong urged the public to assist the police arrest the four robbers who managed to escape.

“A lot of people were mobilized throughout the villages and they pursued them [the robbers] until two of them were gunned down. Before then, they [the robbers] had also shot down one of the people who was assisting the police in pursuing them.”

“For the two of them, we are yet to identify them because nobody has come forward to identify them but for the good samaritan, we know him. We need the support and corporation of everybody but as much as we need that, we need them to be careful,” he said.

A resident, Prosper Napari told Citi News yesterday [Sunday]that many residents had taken cover at the police station due to fears of another attack.

“We heard gunshots and when we traced the whole issue, we realized that there were some intrusion of armed robbers that had come into town.  The people entered through the Togo-Ghana border town and they stopped at the bus stop where people usually exchanged the Ghana and CFA currencies… majority of the people in the town are currently at the Police station to seek shelter. Information we’ve received suggests that the armed robbers had moved to some other outskirts of the Tatale town,” he added.
