An Accra Circuit Court on Friday sentenced Ibrahim Musah, a Scrap dealer, to ten years in prison with hard labour for robbery.

The court convicted Ibrahim on his own plea of guilt and sentenced him accordingly.

Superintendent of Police, Madam Patient Mario told the court that the complainant is a Sales Representative at MTN Head Office.

She said on January 25 at about 2300 hours the accused, Ibrahim Musah and Mohammed Awal, both Scrap dealers riding together on a motorbike, attacked and robbed the complainant of his Infinix Note 2 mobile phone by threatening him with a knife around the Abossey Okai Roundabout.

She said just when they were about to flee the scene, the complainant identified Mohammed, now at large as his Junior High School classmate.

The Prosecutor said Mohammed realising that, he had been identified removed the chip and battery from the complainant’s mobile phone and caused damaged to it and both fled the scene.

Supt. Mario said on January 27 at about 02:30 hours the complainant saw Ibrahim at the same place and alerted the joint Police and Military men on the snap check at Abossey Okai Roundabout.

The Nsuta Circuit Court, presided over by Lydia Osei Marfo, has sentenced two robbers to a total of 90 years imprisonment.

Ferdinand Manu would serve for 50 years while Tijani Issaka would be doing 40 years.

The court further ordered the pair to refund cash of GH¢25,000.00 and return one laptop computer and six mobile phones seized from their victims.

The convicts faced charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery and they both pleaded not guilty.

Police Chief Inspector Nana Boamah told the court that the convicts together with three others on the run, armed with guns, raided the Hope Bakery at Asante-Mampong, on August 30, 2015.

They severely beat up the Managing Director, Mr. Kwabena Badu, and his workers and made off with cash of GH¢25,000.00, a laptop and mobile phones.

Manu, an employee of the bakery, arranged with Issaka and three fugitive accomplices to rob the bakery.

The prosecution said the two men had met at a police cell in Oforikrom, where they had been detained over their suspected involvement in separate crimes the police were investigating and that was where they planned the robbery plot.

Manu informed Issaka that his employer was a successful businessman and sought his assistance to rob him.

They brought in the three others after they were granted police enquiry bail, worked out the plan and struck on the appointed day.

The two were arrested based on police intelligence.

Before handing down the punishment to the robbers, Ms. Osei Marfo, labelled Manu, the mastermind of the robbery, a traitor.

A 22-year-old armed robber, Kingsford Kwaku Yeboah, who is said to have been terrorizing residents of Sunyani and its environs in the Brong-Ahafo Region with his gang, has been sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment by a Sunyani court.

Kingsford, who is termed by friends of the court as ‘Almighty Kingsford’ or ‘talented robber,’ pleaded guilty on all four counts of attempted robbery and robbery.

The prosecutor, a principal state attorney from the Attorney General’s Department, Ernest Ayeh, told the court that on 18th April, 2016 Kingsford attacked and robbed one Oforiwaa Mensah at knifepoint and collected her handbag containing GH¢15,000 and other valuables.

On 25th April, 2016, Kingsford attacked and robbed one Sophia Owusu of her waist bag at Sunyani Penkwasey, also containing GH¢1,915, an Alcatel cell phone, black Samsung phone, Airtel cell phone and Nokia cell phone, amounting to GH¢2,090 at gunpoint.

On 2nd May, 2016, ‘Almighty Kingsford’ and his accomplices robbed one Kate Sam Wilson of GH¢2,000 at Abesim, near Sunyani.

Kingsford allegedly broke into the room of one Thomas Damoah of Kwaetre on 9th February and made away with some items valued at GH¢62,000 and the case is still pending before the court.

Apart from the case involving Thomas Damoah, which has not been concluded, Kingsford pleaded guilty to all the charges and asked the court to deal with him leniently because of his two children.

The judge, Joan Eyi King, said she had realized that the crime rate had increased in the Sunyani municipality and the country as a whole.

She said jail terms are not meant only to be punitive, but serve as deterrent to others.

Ms Joan Eyi King said Kingsford caused psychological trauma to many of his victims, especially a woman who was pregnant.

She said the accused person had been jailed by the same court before.

The sentence was slapped on the accused person and in addition, the judge ordered that some of the items retrieved from Kingsford should be given to their owners.

Residents of Korle-Nkwanta, a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality, are living in fear due to the rampant attacks of armed robbers in the community.

They have therefore appealed to the Eastern Regional Police Command for a police post in the area.

According to Mr. Yaw Owusu, the Assembly Member for the area, from January to March this year, more than 20 armed robbery cases had been recorded, whilst the victims lost many valuable goods including plasma televisions, home theatres, gas cookers and cylinders, clothes, jewels and cash running into thousands of cedis.

He said some of the victims were also subjected to beatings and cutlass wounds in the incidents that often occur at night.

Briefing the GNA at a meeting by the landlords and tenants of the community to introduce a 40-member neighborhood watch-dog committee by volunteers from Korle-Nkwanta and the satellite communities including Nyerede, Acheampong and Agavenya, he said the move had become necessary to protect themselves.

He said the police had been notified and so the members of the neighborhood committee would be trained by the police and every household would contribute an amount to be decided later, to be used in paying allowances and other logistics for the committee members.

The assemblyman also appealed to the churches in the area to support the security arrangements by setting one Sunday in a month to raise funds to help prevent crime.

In a speech read on his behalf, Police superintendent Richardson Kumeko, the Municipal Police Commander, urged the people to be security conscious by weeding their surroundings and being inquisitive to question suspicious characters in the neighborhood.

He commended them for the initiative in forming the watch-dog committee, and advised them to identify a location for the police post/station to enhance the security situation in the area.
