Despite a painful defeat in the 2016 general elections, former President John Dramani Mahama believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) effectively delivered its mandate while in office.

Many, including some members of the governing NDC, have attributed the party’s loss to the incompetence of the President’s team, corruption in government and impunity, among others.

In spite of these criticisms, the President asked the former appointees to hold themselves high in light of what he calls the “monumental achievements” that the party chalked while in power.

“In the monumental achievements that we chalked, I believe that you must hold your heads high because that government did a lot for this country, and I believe that posterity will be the judge eventually. We did a lot to improve the infrastructure of the country, and often infrastructure is a thing people take for granted. It is possible to be in the opposition and criticize.

“We should not feel depressed or feel ashamed about our service in government. It was outstanding. We must continue to defend the legacy of that government.”

The former President also emphasized the need for the party to “regroup, refocus and re-strategize” for victory in 2020.

He charged members of the party to take advantage of Prof. Botchway’s committee to express their grievances instead of the media.

“I’ve been meeting with FEC and the elders; the chairman of the party is now the leader according to our constitution but all of us are members of the party. We’ve served at high level of government and so we have a role to play both as ex-president, ex vice president, as ministers of state and our fortunes are tied in with the party and we are committed members of the party so we must work to make sure that we put the party in a state where we are able to contribute to the progress of this country even in opposition by making sure that we provide the kind of opposition that safeguards the interest of the people.”

The Issachar Prophetic and Leadership Institute, (IPLI), has asked youthful appointees in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, to tread cautiously and avoid repeating mistakes of other young appointees under the John Mahama led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

According to the President of the Institute, Apostle Selassie Addae, the avoidance of such mistakes will make them successful in their quest to serve the country.

Nana Addo in appointing his administrative staff, named four persons between the ages of  Thirty to forty, to serve in his administration.

In an interview with Citi News, Apostle Addae noted that, the posturing of the young appointees will encourage the President to appoint more youthful persons to serve in his administration.

“All future appointees of President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo must desist from arrogant behaviour as it will cause their defeat in the next general elections. We should commend the new president for the great appointment which I pray will follow through the other appointments. The only word of caution is that, we pray the youth will be able to live up to expectation.”

Apostle Addae added that, “We should be able to overcome mediocrity and some of the mistakes that we saw in previous administration over the years. Sometimes the way they speak, they come out as people who are arrogant, the way they approach issues, there must be a lot of circumspection in their language. There must be decorum in how they handle issues and in their language. I think that, as young as they are, they have rich CVs and experience, and I think they can deliver.”

“For some, I think that they have not worked for long, and would need some experience, but with time they should be able to deliver. The President has confidence in them and I think that they can deliver so far as they are able to show that much of respect to the electorates, to the citizens, that one is very important.”

“I don’t think that in the previous government they did badly; but I think that there was this perception of them being arrogant, and I pray that this youth will not disappoint the president, and it would encourage him to appoint more young people, because the young people have that energy also to blend with other people with experience to deliver the promises he has made to the people.”

Nana Addo must include more women – WILDAF https://citifmonline.com/2017/01/nana-addo-must-include-more-women-wildaf/ Sat, 14 Jan 2017 06:00:48 +0000 http://citifmonline.com/?p=284676 Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has called on President Akufo-Addo to involve more women in his government as promised in the party’s 2016 manifesto. Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has called on President Akufo-Addo to involve more women in his government as promised in the party’s 2016 manifesto.

Out of the 36 ministerial appointments currently made by the President, only 9 women have been given positions in the new administration, a situation WILDAF considers unacceptable.

Speaking to Citi News, Board Member of WILDAF, Magdalene Kannae,  asked President Nana Addo to deliver on his promise to ensure 30 percent of his appointees are women.

“Only 9 women have been nominated to occupy ministerial positions out of a total of 36 which represents just 25 percent.  This falls short of the international, regional and national standards as well as the New Patriotic Party’s own provision of minimum threshold of 30 percent women’s representation in its 2016 manifesto.”

“The available data indicates that, Ghana has not achieved beyond 23.4 percent of women’s representation in all public and political appointments since independence. If the current trend of appointment continues, Ghana is not likely to achieve even the minimum threshold of women’s representation in the next 50 years. The NPP government should fulfill its social development agenda provision in their 2016 manifesto of having at least 30 percent women in public office.”

Make women leaders to reduce corruption – GII

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) had earlier asked government to increase the number of women in critical positions to curb corruption.

According to GII, results from a research they conducted showed that men in leadership position would turn out to be more corrupt than women in similar positions

The report indicated that “a total of 498 respondents (81.5%) felt that there would be more likely less corruption if more women were put into positions of responsibility.”
“Similarly, 61.2% of the respondents felt that a person likely to bribe another person is generally a man than a woman,” the report added.
