The Indian government has announced plans to roll out ‘Swachh Bharat Toilet Locator’ in 85 cities by 2 October 2017.

The app is available for download on the Google Play Store to help people locate public toilets near their location.

The app was published by the Ministry of Urban Development and it uses Google Maps to mark out the nearby toilets in your vicinity.

According to a report by Times of India, the government has planned to launch the ‘Mission Toilet Locator; to Agra, Ajmer, Ahmedabad, Bhilai Nagar, Bhubaneswar, Dhanbad, Greater Mumbai, Guwahati, Jammu, Kochi, Vijayawada, and Greater Bengaluru.

The department of Urban development has suggested the municipal bodies tie up with Quality Council of India to map all the community and public toilets in a given area under control by any given municipal body. The government started this in New Delhi and regions around the national capital.

The report detailed that about 50-60 people use the app on a regular basis in NCR and the initiative has pushed the municipality to map about 5,162 toilets across the region. As a part of the announcement, the ministry has plans to start a reward scheme to push users to use the feedback option along with ratings on the toilets in order to increase the popularity of the app.

As soon as you launch the app, you are presented with the option to search toilet for ‘Female’ or ‘Male’ in addition to the options to search any toilet anywhere and one where you can submit a new entry using the ‘Submit Toilet’. When you take any of the buttons to search the public toilets, the app pushes you to a Google map where you can see all the pins corresponding to toilets. When you tap on the pin on the map, the app tells you if the location has been verified along with a reference photo. One thing to note here is that the photo is not always a proper image of the location. Instead, it looks like a random image pulled from the cloud to match the location.

Each screen of the public toilet shows the average score of the toilet based on parameters like ‘Hygiene’, ‘Infrastructure’, ‘Safety’, ‘Seat Type’, and ‘if the toilet is paid’ or free. You also get the fields that will inform if the toilet is ‘disabled friendly’, has ‘Sanitary Pad Disposal’. Other details include ‘Opening Hours’, Seats available including directions and a button to provide feedback about that particular toilet.

These four students have created an app to help teenagers talk about being bullied and get access to counselling.

For Me was originally a school project but the NSPCC’s Childline has turned it into reality.

“I hope that young people now realise they have somewhere to go,” one of the creators, Laura Hindle, tells Newsbeat.

The app features a private “locker” area where users get a daily mood tracker and can write down their thoughts.

It also lets users chat with a counsellor.

“I can’t believe this app is a reality and is out there for people all over the country to access and use,” Laura tells Newsbeat.

“It’s absolutely amazing that we’ve been on this journey and been involved in this process.

“I hope people find it useful and they can get the support they need when they’re going through troubled times.

“I hope that young people now realise they have somewhere to go and with the support they need they can overcome their problems.”

Laura Hindle

Emily Hollings, Laura Hindle, Olivia Pryer and Evie Hill all went to Poynton High School in Cheshire

Now they want to create an adult version

“We’ve always said there should be an app for adults as you can only use For Me until you’re 19,” Laura explains.

“Problems don’t stop once you become an adult – they’re around your workspace – wherever you are.

“It would be amazing if there was an app like this for adults.

“It would be pretty amazing to see that happen.”

The app is now available as a free download from the iOS app store and an Android version is due to be released in the coming weeks.

An app that has all the BECE and WASSCE questions from 1990 to date has been launched in Accra.

The app, Passco, was developed with the aim of helping Junior and Senior high school students to get access to past questions as they prepare for their WAEC external exams.

The CEO of Revo Education (the company that developed Passco), Archibald Annan, said the age of education that the world is getting into is one that the smartphone will take over from text books in schools.

“Education is undergoing a revolution, though it is quite slow in Africa. The smartphone will take over from textbooks, that [the smartphone] will be the school,” he said.

“The app draws a graph of the scores of the students. This helps the teacher, who has access to the students’ score marks, to know how ready the students are for BECE and WASSCE.”

Passco is free on the Google Play Store, and according to the developers, it will be available on iOS and on the web. The Android file size is 20MB, and users must create a REVO account to sign in.

The chairman of the launch, Prof S.E. Anku, also said, “Passco is not just spoon-feeding students, there’s something beyond getting the marks. If the A cannot be used to solve a problem, it is useless.”

“After Passco, we will bring all of our books that are GES approved. We will make sure that we write more books on the conceptual understanding of Mathematics and its relevance to real life.”
