The Mental Health Authority has asked striking nurses and physician assistants at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to return to work.

According to the Authority, the hospital’s Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoye, has been enrolled in some refresher courses to improve his interpersonal skills.

[contextly_sidebar id=”IyAQXIhdRiR4oA60HP5foJeoNYJ6X03E”]The staff said Dr. Dordoye’s presence at the facility posed a danger to their mental and physical health.

Among other things, they accused him of putting them through emotional and psychological stress.

On Thursday, they declared a strike, asking the Mental Health Authority and the Ministry of Health to transfer Mr. Dordoye.

The Mental Health Authority has refused to meet their demands, and has rather asked the striking health professionals to return to work, arguing that they can raise their concerns if the director persists with the alleged inappropriate conduct after his refresher course.

The Head of Communications at the Mental Health Authority, Kwaku Brobbey, told Citi News that it is working to address the impasse.

“What we have decided to do was to get the Director of the Hospital to go into some programs that will help him improve his personal relations at the facility. I think as an Authority, we need to approach this with caution and that decision that we have taken is something that will be of interest to the staff of the hospital. If he comes back from this training and this thing continues then, of course, we have reasons to ask him to perhaps step aside,” he said.

“It should take him some three to four months to go through these courses we have arranged. We are trying to solve a situation and it is not for us to carry out the wish of any person just because the person feels that they cannot work with someone else. They should reconsider their position and let’s give an opportunity to the strategy we have outlined and see what can come out of it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the health practitioners have vowed not to return to work until their request is granted.

‘Medical Director will not be removed’

The striking health professionals embarked on an industrial action in 2017 over the same matter, but the government said removing the director will set a bad precedent.

“I don’t think if we go on that tangent, it will help anybody because it may set a precedent which will not help this nation at all. If staff get up and start agitating that they want a director [sacked] and a Minister goes by that decision and takes him away, it is going to set a precedent for others to follow suit,” the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Robert Cudjoe said in an interview.

Psychiatric Nurses across the country have threatened to join striking nurses at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in the Central Region, to compel government to remove the Medical Director of the health facility, Dr. Eugene Dordoye, from his post.

They want government to heed the call of the Ankaful Psychiatric nurses to ensure stability within the facility. The Ankaful nurses have been on a sit-down strike for about two weeks now, demanding the dismissal of their boss.

[contextly_sidebar id=”j4w6VgdrcKbnWoE0c4Ky0U4g5OzKavIY”]Spokesperson for the Psychiatric nurses’ group, Philip Frempong Okyere, told Citi News the Health Minister must act swiftly to restore peace at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital.

“There is no peace, and the nurses are not working, the patients are stranded. For one person to hold the whole institution to ransom, I think the Minister should look at it the second time. If the Health Minister makes any attempt to impose the man on the nurses, the other two psychiatric institutions and those working at the community level, we will also lay down our tools in support. The nurses and other professionals have clearly indicated that so long as the man remains, they are not going to work, and we support that call so we expect the Minister to act in time.”

Ankaful Nurses strike

The staff carried out their threat to lay down their tools, in an attempt to compel the government to remove the facility’s Medical Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoye from his post.

The nurses had earlier given the government a three-day ultimatum, and threatened to declare a strike, if the government fails to heed their calls.

They are accusing the Medical Director of maladministration and gross disrespect to subordinates and have refused to return to work despite a four-page letter from Dr. Dordoye apologising to them.

Nurses at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in the Central Region have threatened to intensify their strike if their demands are not met.

The staff carried out their threat to lay down their tools, in an attempt to compel the government to remove the facility’s Medical Director, Dr. Eugene Dordoye from his post.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dxnMRlrACf6hoDmRY9xS8adYS70ey3cH”]The nurses had earlier given the government a three-day ultimatum, and threatened to declare a strike, if the government fails to heed their calls.

They are accusing the Medical Director of maladministration and gross disrespect to subordinates.

Spokesperson for the Nurses, Daniel Danso, on Eyewitness News said the strike will be intensified by Monday if the Ministry of Health fails to meet their demands.

“We are still going to intensify our strike, but we are still in talks [with stakeholders] so we will have our sit down strike till Monday.”

We’re  not aware of any apology

Mr. Danso also indicated that, they are unaware of any apology from Mr. Dordoye.

Dr. Dordoye had issued an apology  in which he also explained what he believes might have angered the nurses to take such a move.

But Mr. Danso pointed out that they were yet to receive the apology saying “As we speak, we have not seen any apology from Dr. Dordoye.”

Nature of strike

Giving a detailed description on the nature of the strike, an Administrator at the hospital, Mr. Godwin Pongo, said: “They are on sit down strike with respect to out patient services. Only emergency cases are being attended to, meaning patients that come for review are not being attended to, but those that are aggressive are being attended to.”

“According to their road-map, by Sunday if they do not hear anything from the sector minister, then they will declare a total strike from Monday, meaning they will not attend to patients that are on admission,” he added.
