Amnesty International Ghana has decried the upsurge of mob attacks, otherwise known as instant justice, which is gaining notoriety in most Ghanaian communities.

It noted with grave concern that the situation is steadily endangering human security. As a human rights advocacy organization, it implores the nation’s law enforcement agencies to tackle the situation.

Amnesty International Ghana’s Board Chairman, George Aggrey, raised the concern at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Tamale Catholic Guest House.

It was under the theme, “Protecting Our Environment and Our Right to Life”.

George Aggrey, however allayed fears saying, “Generally, Ghana’s human rights record is quite good except the issue of mob justice which is becoming serious among a section of citizens.”

He said Amnesty International Ghana would strengthen its partnership with the law enforcement agencies to thwart such unlawful conduct. He emphasized the need for the police administration to widen its surveillance and rapidly respond to distress calls on mob justice.

This in his estimation, could avoid recurrence of the lynching of the late Major Maxwell Adam Mahama and other citizens, who died through such dastardly acts.

Fire disasters (Bushfires)

According to the Northern Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Abu Iddrisu, fire disasters continued to destroy the nation’s resources affecting 24 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

He said 99 percent of bush fires recorded nationwide were man-made, and thus called for attitudinal change.

Abu Iddrisu condemned the illegal mining of non-renewable natural resources including diamond, gold, bauxite, limestone and other mineral deposits.

“Unnecessary scooping of the top soil results in loss of the immediate fertile soil that facilitates plant growth, thereby impacting negatively on agriculture and food security in Ghana.”

He disclosed that some chiefs and departmental heads should be blamed for allowing unscrupulous people to flout environmental laws with impunity.

He called for a multifaceted approach to curtail environmental degradation especially in the Northern Region where bushfires are perennial.
