The case involving the Republic vrs Nana Afua Nketia Obuo II and twelve others at the Koforidua High Court, has been adjourned.

One of the factions in the Akuapem chieftaincy dispute is facing a contempt of court suit for defying a court injunction which was restraining both factions from engaging in any chieftaincy activities.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9w3PLJR15xpMs7DJlylTjhtrSDRavQTi”]Presiding judge, Her Ladyship Cecilia Naa Shormeh Davis, who identified some lapses in the suit, adjourned the case to March 8th 2018, and advised lawyers to rectify the errors.

The dispute follows the death of Chief of the area, Oseadeyo Nana Addo Dankwah III, two years ago.

The controversy is over the eligibility of the candidates vying for the stool.

The impasse prevented the people of Akropong from hosting the 2017 Odwira Durbar.

National Security takes over Akuapem palace

About 30 armed men from the National Security headquarters in Accra stormed the Okuapemhene’s Palace in January 2018, and forced all occupants of the building out, following reports of a possible chieftaincy clash over the imminent installation of two chiefs in the area.

The Adontehene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, Nana Djan Kwasi II, subsequently gave the National Security operatives a 24-hour ultimatum to vacate the palace or face their wrath.

The National Security operatives had earlier in January picked up detained at the police headquarters in Accra the queen mother and two other chiefs of the Akuapem Traditional Area  and detained at the police headquarters in Accra.

The three were reportedly fueling a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.

Committee condemns political interference

The seven-member committee mediating the chieftaincy impasse also condemned the raid and subsequent takeover of the palace by National security operatives.

Addressing a news conference, the Chairman of the Committee, Otuobour Gyan Kwasi II, Aburihene and Adontenghene of Akuapem Traditional Council, expressed their disappointment with some politicians whom they claim have interests in the ongoing traditional unrest at Akropong.

“We have been made aware that some kingmakers and other prominent chiefs have been giving false information to our revered national security apparatus and in our view, this issue is being politicized. So we beg of all politicians who one way or the other have interest in our chieftaincy issues to advise themselves and stay away.”

The Minister for Regional Re-organization and Development, Mr Daniel Kweku Botwe has called on the Akuapem Traditional Council to quickly resolve the chieftaincy problem surrounding the enstoolment of a new Akuapemhene to succeed the late Nana Addo Dankwa.

The Akuapem School for the deaf situated at Mampong Akuapem in the Eastern Region of Ghana, on Saturday, July 8, 2017, received a vital donation from the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies (GACS) as well as the Chinese chamber of commerce.

The support came to the disadvantaged school for the deaf in the form of ten brand new desktop computers for the demonstration school as well as a whole day’s medical outreach screening for students, teachers and nearby residents of the community.

In view of this, the members of the GACS visited the Akuapem Mampong community with an 11-member team of Chinese medical experts including nine doctors and their medical equipment for the purpose of screening for health issues in the school.

“As a business society in Ghana, the GACS have used every occasion to represent the fraternity between China and Ghana, and we will continue to build and nurture that relationship for our mutual benefit through our corporate responsible donations such as this, and the continued provision of employment opportunities to many young Ghanaians for as long as we remain and do business in Ghana”, said Mr. Tang Hong, chairman of the GACS during the donation ceremony.

“The Akuapem school for the deaf needs support in teaching and learning”, he continued, “and we are here to give it to them because it is our duty to support the underprivileged in society.”

Mr. Tang Hong, also the Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O) of the CAITEC Group of companies praised Ghana government for “a good business environment”, adding that they are donating the computers to the school as a corporate social responsibility with the hope that it will help to improve quality of education and life in the beneficiary community.

“We also hope that our gestures of friendship with the communities such as we are doing today, will add to the deepening friendship and relationship that exists between our two great countries – China and Ghana.”

Mr. Goodluck Akuffo Kpeli, an Assistant headmaster of the school received the donation, and expressed excitement and gratitude to the Chinese society of business people and their medical team in Ghana.

The Akuapem School for the deaf established fifty years ago, has a student population of 418, and enrol students from primary school to Junior high school from all over Ghana.

After the donation of computers, the Chinese medical team set up in various departments and specialities, using classrooms as makeshift consulting rooms to screen the hundreds of school children, teachers, and community members who availed themselves to the free medical exercise.

A member of the Chinese medical outreach team who spent the entire day on health screening in the community, Optometrist Dr. Surina Zhang, painted a grim picture of her findings in her department.

“Out of 120 children whose eyes I screened, almost 60 have very serious problems. The children here are not only deaf; some of them are going blind. Some have congenital problems. Some need to do surgery, and some need medications and others need further examinations. Some of the children are going blind, but they don’t know. As doctors, we help by identifying the health problems among the children here. At first, they didn’t know, but now they know the help they need, and I hope they get help from the government or society.”

The Chinese medical brigade is based at the LEKMA Hospital in Accra which was built in 2010 by the Chinese government and donated to the Ghana government.

The team has spent five months out of its one-year rotational tour of Ghana, and they will continue to carry out many medical outreach programs in various deprived communities in the country until the end of the tour later in 2017.
