The management of Citi FM/Citi TV has, for the second time, donated relief items to the victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage at Mafi Aklamador in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.

Citi FM and Citi TV’s Volta Relief Project, backed by viewers, listeners, and corporate partners, remain steadfast in providing aid to those affected by the Volta River overflow and Akosombo Dam spillage crises.

Displaced residents, now in various temporary shelters due to the flood, have struggled to secure essential supplies.

Some of the beneficiary communities include Mafi Derine, Mafi Dokpo, Battor, Kebegodo, Aklamador, Dove, Atsemkope, Akpokope, Gbadakope, and Ahokope communities.

The donation was made in response to a request from a former member of parliament for Central Tongu, Joe Kwashie Amewugah Gidisu.

Mr. Gidisu, who opened his home to accommodate some of the affected victims since the spillage, has constantly sought help for the affected persons.

Delivering the items, the Programmes Manager of Citi FM and Citi TV, Mr. Richard Mensah, expressed the station’s unwavering commitment to supporting the affected victims during these challenging times.

“On behalf of the management of Citi FM/Citi TV and our listeners, we are here to donate generously to you. We are in it for a long haul, and it’s not over yet for us to support you. For us, it’s a calling.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the victims, the MP assured to distribute the items judiciously.

“We are grateful to Citi FM/Citi TV, I want to assure the donors that their support is in the right place. Items will be distributed judiciously, and we will later give an account of the distribution,” Joe Kwashie Amewugah Gidisu assured.

The relief items, including rice, oil, water, gari, maize, sardines, sugar, second-hand clothes, drinks, and more, were received by Mr. Joe Gidisu and the Chief of Mafi Aklamador, Torgbe Amu V, Kofi Gershon Dzisenu, on behalf of the victims.

They conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the management and Staff of Citi FM/Citi TV, as well as the media house’s cherished listeners and viewers.

Some affected victims, sharing their thoughts with Citi News, appealed for additional support for those still grappling with the aftermath of the spillage.

“We really appreciate the gesture, but we need more support,” they said.

Torgbe Amu V, Kofi Gershon Dzisenu, the Chief of Mafi Aklamador, expressed profound gratitude for the gesture.

Citi FM and Citi TV, through the generosity of their listeners and viewers, have already extended a helping hand to the victims of the overflow of the Volta River and subsequent Akosombo Dam spillage disaster in many affected communities, bringing smiles to the faces of thousands in the affected communities.

The efforts included the donation of assorted relief items such as mattresses, cooking utensils, blankets, rice, beans, maize, sachet water, and mosquito nets, as part of the relief campaign.

Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko has stressed his outfit’s commitment to improving livelihoods in communities affected by the construction of the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River.

He explains that his ministry will work to generate funds to address critical issues confronting residents in such communities.

Mr. Agyarko believes addressing the funding needs is critical to sustaining the livelihoods of such affected persons.

“I wish to lay emphasis on the sordid plight of the resettlement townships because for about 30 years, these communities have suffered from environmental degradation, poor drainage and road networks and difficulties arising from low income levels. It is reported that initially, these townships did not even have electricity supply, the very commodity for which the people lost their entire livelihood,” he stressed.

Mr. Agyarko added, “The Trust Fund, has achieved a modest success, however, it has faced numerous challenges over the years, primarily, because the grant from the Volta River Authority (VRA) has not been regulator in the past few years. In fact, I am informed that a part of the grant expected in 2015 and the grants expected in 2016 and 2017 are still outstanding.”

Volta Fund Board 2

The Volta Resettlement Fund, established over twenty years ago (1996), is mandated to seek to the welfare needs of the 52 communities affected by the Volta Lake project.

The creation of the Volta Lake among others, led to the flooding of about 730 villages with a total population of about 80,000 people.

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Directors for the Fund, the Chairperson, His Worship Rtd. Emmanuel Nana Antwi-Barima also expressed his outfit’s resolve to improve the livelihoods of all affected persons.

“If the state has so soon forgotten that the people whose land has been swallowed or cannibalized by the water before we are getting fish, water and electricity are being relegated to the background, then this is an awakening call. First to the Minister and his Deputies, then we the Board members,” he noted.

He added, “But the only problem is that when we come, there wouldn’t be the usual syndrome, no money antics…But automatically, money will be used for certain things we want to give to the people i.e. education, water, electricity, among others.”

The Board is Chaired by His Worship Rtd. Emmanuel Nana Antwi-Barima with members including; Hon. Matthew Nyindam, Ms Beatrice Owusu, Hon. Salifu Braimah.

Others are; Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh, Hon. Helen Adzoa Ntoso and Mr. Winfred N. Amanu.

Mr Richard Oppong Mensah, Director of the Akosombo Hydro Generating Station, has assured that robust measures are in place to prevent illegal miners (Galamseyers) from destroying the Akosombo Dam.

He indicated that there was adequate surveillance of the river to protect it from the activities of Galamseyers “so the public should not worry at all.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”8TaI4NoFP1f8kGxOgdTQai3Uk4BV3oHY”]The Director was speaking to the media on Thursday, when the Volta River Authority (VRA) organised a media  visit at the Kpone Thermal Power Station and the Akosombo Hydro Generating Station.

The event was aimed at updating the media and the general public on the projects VRA was undertaking to ensure sustainable and reliable power supply in the country.

Mr Mensah said: “We monitor all the banks of the river up to the North and periodically, we go round to inspect the banks. When we find that any activity is drawing closer to our banks, we immediately stop the perpetrator.”

He said the VRA had also warned all chiefs to stay off the banks by 50 metres distance cautioning that, anyone who would flout the directive would certainly be dealt with.

He explained that the 50-metre land space had been bought by the Authority saying, “therefore any attempt to sell it is a gross violation of the law and we will drag you to court to face the necessary sanctions.”

Mr Mensah said periodically, the Authorities of the Station met with the chiefs to discuss all security issues regarding the river and presented a report on their operations to them “and if they have issues, we address them.”

The Akosombo Hydro Generating Station, Mr Mensah said, had undergone significant maintenance including retooling and replacement of weak equipment with modern ones to boost its capacity.

In 1989, the Akosombo Generation Station Retrofit Project was implemented and completed in 2006 which resulted in a significant increment in its capacity by 108MW, from 912MW to 1020MW.

He called on the public to maintain confidence in the VRA as the Authority was working assiduously to ensure that the country had sustainable and reliable power supply.

The GNA found out that work was in progress to increase capacity at the two stations.
