A three-year-old boy has been confirmed dead, while 30 others have been left injured following the collapse of a church building’s wall, and two others whose roofs were ripped off  in a rainstorm at Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

The buildings, located in different parts of the area, were holding Sunday services when the incident occurred.

The injured persons are receiving treatment at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

Covenant Temple Ministry, one of the affected churches, was shielding the children from the rainstorm when its roof and wall collapsed.

The deceased, who was among the children seeking shelter on the podium, was crushed by the broken wall.

It took the intervention of some personnel from the Ghana National Service to help persons trapped under the rubble to be removed.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the region, estimates that over 600 residents may have been affected by the Sunday rainstorm, with some rendered homeless.

According to the Agona West Disaster Control Officer, Joseph Kojo Appiah, the incident “has affected schools, residential facilities, and churches. The church building totally collapsed while a church service was ongoing. About 30 people were injured and they are receiving treatment at the hospital. In other rural areas, about 7 people were injured. About 600 people have been affected. Internally displaced persons are about 200 but they are all not in the same area. The rain brought a power outage so we are still trying to communicate with our staff on the ground so by close of day, we’ll issue a full report. For those without places to spend the night, we’ll find a temporary shelter for them,” he told Citi News.

Meanwhile, power is yet to be fully restored to the area as some electricity cables and poles were destroyed by the storm.

A combined team of Police, Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), and the Ghana Immigration Service personnel, have apprehended three people at Agona Swedru for allegedly attempting to traffic 11 girls to Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.

The girls, aged between 14 and 22, were recruited from Kumasi, Togo and Volta North District of the Volta Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4QdnC5sGI339YVBSKpRB9CCrc0GA8Ja5″]Police Chief Inspector Philip Arthur, Head of Agona Swedru Divisional Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, who disclosed this to the media, said the suspects were arrested upon a tip off.

The suspects are Alhaji Ibrahim Imoro 60, Hajia Sward Zakari, and Hajia Zaratu Ibrahim both wives of the suspect, and resident at Yarlewa Zongo, a suburb of Agona Swedru.

Chief Inspector Arthur said the Immigration Service Personnel at Agona West Municipal Office had information that Alhaji Imoro had kept the females in his house.

According to Head of DOVVU, the suspect’s son (name withheld) for security reasons, initially brought 12 females to Swedru and took one of them to an unknown place in Kumasi and left the rest in Agona Swedru.

He said this was not the first time the suspect’s son had brought a group of females to Agona Swedru to be trafficked to Saudi Arabia and other Arab states for odd jobs.

Chief Inspector Arthur said the suspect told the security personnel during interrogation that his son brought the ladies for safe keeping at Agona Swedru.

He said the suspect confessed that his son was in Accra to prepare Ghanaian passports to enable the ladies to travel to their various destinations.

He said two of the girls revealed during the interrogation that, their parents were not aware of their supposed traveling abroad to work, which each could earn them huge dollars as salaries at the end of every month.

Chief Inspector Arthur said nine Togolese females involved in the trafficking, could not identify their hometowns where they were picked from by the suspect.

Chief Inspector Arthur said the 11 girls and three suspects have been transported to the Ghana Immigration Service head Office in Accra for further action.

Twenty-three former Agona West Municipal Assembly Members have threatened to take legal action against the assembly for failing to pay them their ex-gratia for more than two years.

The threat was issued at the third ordinary session of the assembly at Agona Swedru.

A spokesman of the members, Mr Jude Baffoe, former Assemblyman for Agona Kwamang and a government appointee of the assembly, said all efforts made to force the assembly to pay the money had proven futile.

He said the ex-members were looking forward to being paid an amount of GH₵ 1,500 each, approved by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

He appealed to Mr Collins Dauda, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, to probe the delay of the payment.

Mr Jonathan Benifo, the Acting Co-ordinating Director of the Assembly, responded that the assembly was struggling to mobilise money to pay the ex-members.
