The management of Citi FM and Citi TV has completed another resettlement centre for persons displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The second centre is located in Ada, within the Greater Accra Region’s Ada East District. It is specifically designed to house 200 displaced individuals.

The first resettlement centre is situated in Tokpo, Shai-Osudoku District.

This resettlement centre forms a crucial part of the Citi Foundation’s “Rebuild” phase, offering relief support to victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

During the brief commissioning ceremony held in Ada on Tuesday, Bernard Avle, General Manager of Citi FM and Citi TV, expressed his gratitude to listeners and viewers whose generosity made the resettlement centre a reality.

Mr. Avle emphasized the centre’s importance in providing temporary housing for those rendered homeless by the flood caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

He noted that the decision to build resettlement shelters arose from the understanding that some affected individuals might not be able to rebuild their homes for several months.

“A few days into the campaign, we made the bold decision to build resettlement shelters because reports indicated that some people’s houses were devastated and couldn’t be rebuilt for many months.”

“We also realized that because many of these people will want to own their own houses, they may not wish to stay in a resettlement shelter forever. Based on the deliberations and advice from the DCE and local leaders, we decided on a two-in-one approach. We have built a resettlement centre that can accommodate up to 200 people. However, when the permanent solution is implemented, and they move back to their residences or acquire their own houses, we don’t want the building to become a white elephant. Therefore, the district has agreed with us that the building we are commissioning today will be repurposed to become a fully equipped and furnished skills training centre, providing necessary skills and training for many women and young people in this community,” he noted.

Mr. Avle also commended donors for their generosity, pointing out that contributions from corporate Ghana and listeners and viewers of Citi FM and Citi TV showcased the true Ghanaian spirit.

Nene Tsatsu Pediator V, representing the Ada Traditional Council, echoed Mr. Avle’s sentiments and expressed gratitude to the donors on behalf of the community.

He urged other individuals and organizations to join in supporting the victims.

Nene Pediator V appealed to Citi TV and Citi FM to continue using their network to solicit assistance for the ongoing needs of the affected communities.

The ceremony marked a significant step in providing both immediate relief and long-term empowerment for those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage in Ada.

“Citi TV and Citi FM, upon hearing about the flood issues, came to the district to personally assess the situation and inform the public through news reports, attracting support from individuals, NGOs, and companies to aid the affected communities.”

“Citi TV and Citi FM initiated the project to provide a shelter for the affected people, and Nene Abraham Kabu Akuaku III, Paramount Chief of Ada, expresses his utmost gratitude to all of you for your contributions. We also take this opportunity to appeal to Citi TV and Citi FM to continue using their network to solicit further assistance for the victims,” Nene Pediator V stated.

A Council of State Member, Dr. Nii Kotei Dzani, has charged the police administration to sanction its personnel who stood by and watched as chaos allegedly perpetrated by the pro-New Patriotic Party vigilante group, Invincible Forces, ensued at an election to confirm Ada East District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee.

Dr. Dzani, in a statement after the incident on Friday, said he was ashamed to review video footage of the incident, “which clearly showed some police personnel standing idle at the premises where the regrettable incidents took place.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”LnEqSNBZNGRCEJdAGMXnjQn18GqC5P07″]He thus urged the Police administration to “take urgent steps to identify and punish those officers who abdicated their duties publicly” to redeem the police service’s image amid concerns the police have often treated such incidents lightly.

“I charge all relevant security agencies to rise to their constitutional mandate and combat the creeping lawlessness in our midst, no matter the affiliations of the instigators of such violent occurrences… In this particular instance, I am committed to seeing through the processes that will ensure justice for all who fell victim to this afternoon’s aggression and violence,” Dr, Dzani added.

The DCE nominee for the Ada East, Sarah Dugbakie, was confirmed amid violence and reports of manipulation by the police and members of Invincible Forces.

Confusion ensued among some Assembly Members and the vigilante group despite police presence.

HON. DR. NII KOTEI DZANI CONDEMNS ATTACK ON ADA EAST DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

————————————

It was with profound sadness that I received the news this afternoon of an attack on members of the Ada East District Assembly during confirmation polls for the nominated District Chief Executive (DCE), allegedly perpetrated by the so-called “Invisible Forces”, a notorious vigilante group.

In this moment, I wish to express my solidarity with the victims of this cowardly attack, innocent Ghanaians peacefully discharging their democratic duties. As a country, it is time we rid ourselves of factionalism of all kinds, especially those borne out of political divisions, in order that we can pull together as one people working to realize a common vision of development and prosperity for our country and people.

I was ashamed to view video footage of the incident, which clearly showed some police personnel standing idly by at the premises where the regrettable incidents took place. I urge the Police Administration to take urgent steps to identify and punish those officers who abdicated their duties so publicly, in order to restore the reputation of the Police Service in the eyes of the public.

Further, I wish to remind all government appointees to be mindful of the fact that it is from the same Constitution that all of us derive our offices, irrespective of the level in the governance structure in which we serve. That is why we must all be tolerant and respectful of each other and condemn behaviours that project violence against one another.

I charge all relevant security agencies to rise to their constitutional mandates and combat the creeping lawlessness in our midst, no matter the affiliations of the instigators of such violent occurrences. It is only by uniformly and consistently applying the law that the needed deterrence would be established against those that operate outside the boundaries of the law. In this particular instance, I am committed to seeing through the processes that will ensure justice for all who fell victim to this afternoon’s aggression and violence.

As always, I stand ready to offer my support in any way I can to achieve a harmonious society for all who reside within this beautiful land of our birth.

There is mounting tension in the Ada East District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, as President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for the District Chief Executive position, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee, appears before members for another round of voting.

The nominee failed to secure the required two-thirds of the total votes cast during the second round of voting on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, as she polled 19 out of a total of 36 votes, representing 52 per cent.

Tomorrow [Friday], will be her third attempt to secure the approval of the Assembly for the job of DCE.

As Ms. Pobee appears before the Assembly again for the determination of her fate, reports are emerging that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are threatening members of the Assembly to coerce them into accepting the President’s nominee.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has spent over two years inside Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, said on Monday he planned to leave the building “soon”, but his spokesman said that could only happen if Britain let him.

Britain has repeatedly said it won’t back down, that its laws must be followed, and that Assange should be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault and rape, which he denies. Assange would be arrested if he exited the building because he has breached his British bail terms.

Assange’s comments briefly raised the possibility of him leaving the embassy, somewhere he has been holed up since June 2012. But his spokesman later told reporters that he could only do so if the British government “calls off the siege outside”. Assange had no intention of handing himself over to the police, the spokesman said.

The 43-year-old Australian says he fears that if Britain extradited him to Sweden he would then be extradited to the United States where he could be tried for one of the largest information leaks in U.S. history.

“I am leaving the embassy soon … but perhaps not for the reasons that Murdoch press and Sky news are saying at the moment,” Assange told reporters at the embassy in central London, before refusing to clarify his comments.

Britain’s Sky News, part owned by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, had earlier reported that Assange was considering leaving the embassy due to deteriorating health.
