Thirty shoppers have qualified for the much-anticipated finals of the ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ promotion in which three emerging winners will grab slots for all-expense-paid trips to three sensational holiday destinations around the world.

Accra’s three leading shopping malls, West Hills Mall, Accra Mall and Achimota Retail Centre, jointly launched the ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ a month ago as a loyalty reward promo for their shoppers and also to infuse some excitement into the respective shopping experience at the malls.

The winning shopper in the West Hills Mall trivia will earn a holiday trip to Dubai, while the winners at Accra Mall and Achimota Mall fly to holiday destinations in Mauritius and Cape Town respectively. All three holiday slots have been pre-packaged to allow winners to travel with their partner, both of whom will be fully covered by the prize, comprising all-expense-paid flights, destination tours and accommodation, in addition to US$ 2,000 spending money for a stay of five days and four nights at the destination. Entries for the promo closed at all the malls last Wednesday, March 14, and the final trivia game is set to take place separately at each of the three malls on Friday, 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March.

The trivia is open to shoppers who, over the promo period, spent a minimum of Ghc300 at any shop or a number of shops at West Hills Mall, Accra Mall or Achimota Mall respectively. Shoppers’ entry slips are filled out  with their personal and shopping information and dropped into an Entry Box for a public draw by the National Gaming Commission to shortlist 30 finalists – ten from each mall.

Mr. Victor Adu Amankwa MIS Manager at the National Gaming Commission disclosed, after he led a team to conduct three separate draws to select 10 finalists for each of the three malls, that over 3,400 shoppers took part in the Triple Travel Trivia promo.

Once an entry was picked electronically from among the lot, an official of the Gaming Commission would instantly and publicly dial the shopper’s given phone number to inform them about their selection among the last 10 for the final Trivia and about how close they are to winning a free holiday trip abroad.

Mr. Jonathan Lotter, Asset Manager for AttAfrica Ghana Portfolio, said, “because the prizes at stake are of very high value (all-expense-paid trips to three dreamland destinations), credibility and fair play are critical, and that’s why I’m particularly happy that these draws to select the 30 finalists were conducted by the National Gaming Commission itself.”

Mr. Michael Konadu, Marketing Manager for West Hills Mall, explained that each of the three malls will host its own final trivia game night on either March 23, 24 and 25 respectively at which the qualifying shoppers will compete to grab one of the three holiday slots.

Central Cape Town

‘Now that we know the challengers for all three trivia showdowns, let’s all brace ourselves for thrilling encounters with our participant shoppers and see who get to win these enticing summer holiday prizes,” said Mr. Konadu.

He said the final trivia games have been planned to be exceptionally recreational for all and each final event at all three malls would be moderated by Trigmatic, a celebrated Ghanaian musician and popular host on ‘Y’FM.

Family of Lily Donkor, the third-year student of Achimota Senior High School who was shot and killed by her mate, is demanding justice from the state.

The 17- year old boy accused of shooting Lily was convicted and handed a three year jail term for manslaughter.

An Accra High Court on Monday however quashed the sentence and freed him.

According to the court presided over Justice Kofi Dogu, the trial judge at the juvenile court erred in demanding a social enquiry report only after sentencing the accused, although it is required by law to do so before sentencing.

Lily’s family is however not pleased with the court’s judgement.

A relative of the deceased, Peggy Ama Donkor, said the state must revisit the case.

“The state should revisit the case. The truth is that we are not happy even with the three years sentence given but we could not do anything about it. This case should serve as a deterrent to other parents and their wards who think that with money or connections they can be left off the hook when they commit a crime. People have committed less crimes, some have stolen just banana; they are juveniles and they are in there. He did not even go to the normal prison, he went to a correctional home and they are saying what? Those of us who lost our daughter are still calling for justice for Lily,” she said.

The ruling followed an appeal by the lawyers of the boy, who argued that the sentence handed to him was too harsh.

They also claimed that the trial judge lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

The High Court held that there had been a miscarriage of justice because the Juvenile Court delivered a verdict without a social enquiry report.

He was found guilty of manslaughter by the Accra Juvenile court in September 2017, during proceedings that were heard in-camera.

Being 16-years-old at the time of the incident on January 4, 2017, he was tried by a Juvenile Court.

The boy, who resides at Community Eight in Tema, is said to have gone for his father’s gun, which was under a bed with the intention of firing shots into the air.

He however ended up killing his friend, Lily Donkor, a third-year student of the same school.

The boy told police that his intent was to fire the gun into the air, a claim corroborated by the police, adding however that the weight of the gun changed the course of the bullet, which hit the deceased.

A prompt response from the Ghana National Fire Service averted another likely gas explosion in Achimota over the weekend.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, Prince Billy Anaglatey, told Citi News firemen immediately rushed to the scene when they received information there was fire in the engine compartment of a gas tanker.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yIfN2fPAjd4VDuTPuA9YtadIXtl1cOyE”]“We had a call that there was a gas tanker at Achimota bridge area and we dispatched our people to the scene… When they got there, they saw that it was a gas tanker engine compartment that was actually on fire but the timely intervention of the Fire Service brought the fire under control,” Mr. Anaglatey explained.

This incident comes days after a gas explosion left seven dead and several others injured at Atomic junction in Accra.

Following the explosion, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) boss, Hassan Tampuli, revealed that his outfit had identified some safety lapses at the MANSCO Liquefied Petroleum Gas station, where the explosion occurred, and had written to the station, among others, to rectify the lapses by September 4.

The NPA also noted that, there was too much activity on the forecourt around the cylinder filling and auto gas area, and that there was a lack of safety signs and the absence of a waiting area for customers.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), had admitted some culpability, but said some other agencies also had various roles to play in regulating the operations of the station.

Government has also announced the implementation of a cylinder re-circulation policy within the next one year, a policy some LPG distributors are kicking against.

Government after a cabinet meeting, also announced a number of measures all in a bid to curtail explosions at gas and petrol/diesel filling points.

This brings to two, the number of such stations opened by the company in the region.

The facility which was inaugurated on Thursday is supposed to receive solid waste from refuse operators for onward distribution to treatment plants within the country.

This comes on the back of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa after his tenure of office.

Speaking to Citi News after the opening of the station, President of ESPA, Joseph Siaw Agyepong said Accra is inching closer to becoming a clean city with the introduction of such waste transfer stations.

“The Achimota Transfer Station has come at the right time to help our members to improve on their collection of municipal solid waste…It will ensure speedy collection and haulage of waste from the city, and begin the cleanest city agenda as envisioned by our government. We wish to assure the government of our continued resolve to support its efforts in making Accra the cleanest city in Africa. We believe that the vision is achievable and more facilities such as the Achimota Transfer Station would be needed in strategic locations to drive its fulfillment,” he added.

Mr. Siaw further explained that the Achimota waste transfer station has a capacity of absorbing about 200,000 tonnes of waste every day “which means that over 100 waste trucks of different sizes can dump for the facility daily.”

Hawkers and residents around the Old Achimota overhead in Accra, were stunned on Thursday morning at the sight of a lifeless body which hanged on a tree.

This incident comes a day after a sixteen-year-old student in the Eastern Region, was to have committed suicide by hanging herself in a Kitchen.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LZoLTpGpQeP4dUc9kmmHRho2XUAw6wCn”]Some of the hawkers who saw the body  today [Thursday], said they suspect foul play.

“I have seen someone who has committed suicide before, but looking at the rope he used I suspect foul play,”one of the hawkers told Citi News.

Meanwhile the Tesano District Police Commander, DSP Edward Tetteh, says its preliminary investigations show the deceased was at a betting house around the area on Wednesday night.

Wednesday night was a champions League night with the biggest game taking place between Barceloa and PSG. It was unclear yet whether the deceased may have taken his life due to a failed bet.

“We heard information from operation room that around 6.30 there was a body found around Achimota overhead so Police proceeded to the scene and we went to find the body hanging on a rope; so through our investigations, we had to drop the body down and convey it to the mortuary. We cannot dispute the fact that it is murder because the way we found the body, we are suspicious, but we have sent it to the Police hospital for autopsy to confirm whether it is a murder case or not. And we have found his mobile phone, and we found out that he was at Mybet on Wednesday night.”

“The receipt found on him indicated that, he was at Mybet the previous night, so we have asked the investigator to proceed to Mybet to find out whether he was indeed there.”

Other suicide cases

This suicide case follows similar ones that occurred at New Tafo in the Eastern Region, the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Invest in mental health to reduce suicides – Dr Osafo

A clinical psychologist and suicidologist at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joseph Osafo, has bemoaned the lack of seriousness in terms of government investments and support for mental health.

According to him, this situation has contributed to the increasing trend of suicide in the country.
