Project Manager for the renovation works at the Accra Sports Stadium, Chris Aviah Gyebi has called on the Sports Ministry to limit the use of the Accra Sports Stadium by preventing Ghana Premier League games at the facility until renovation works are done.

The renovation works which began on Wednesday are expected to last for six months and will be completed in September, two months before the commencement of the Women’s AFCON which begins in November.

Both Accra Hearts of Oak and Inter Allies have been cleared by the National Sports Authority to host their home fixtures for the upcoming Premier League season at the Accra Stadium.

Asked if he would recommend the use of the stadium during the renovation works, Gyebi said: “I will not recommend that at all, it shouldn’t be used for any activity.

The structural integrity of the facility should not be compromised by extra activity during the works. We cannot open the place to everyone.”

The Accra Sports Stadium was first inaugurated in 1952, and later renamed after Ghana’s first sports administrator, Ohene Djan in 2004.

It was however reverted to its original name; Accra Sports Stadium without a ceremony following some controversies.

The stadium was last renovated in 2008 at a cost of $31 million to be used as one of the stadia for the 2008 African Cup of Nations when Ghana hosted the continental tournament.

Unfortunately, the stadium has been left to rot, becoming a death trap for patrons including government leaders who grace special sporting events there.

Here are some photos of the current state of the stadium.

Management of Accra Hearts of Oak has denied media reports that the team was locked out of the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

Reports suggested that the team together with it’s Scottish trainer Frank Nuttal were denied access to the field for training due to lack of payment for the use of the facility.

But in a bizarre turn of events, Public Relations Officer of the club, Kwame Opare Addo, explained that the team was at the stadium for a photo shoot with media rights holder of the Ghana Premier League Startimes and has described the reports as “immature journalism.”

“I think it will be irresponsible on anyone’s part to say we have been sacked or locked out of the Accra Sports Stadium. That is not mature journalism. People should sometimes put some decency in their reports. We were at the stadium today to have a photo shoot with Startimes, then after that we trained at the same venue. I believe someone spotted us when we were having the photo shoot and decide to report this false information, and it is an immature way of reporting,” he added.

The club also took to social media platform, Twitter to urge fans to disregard the media reports.
