The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has shut down six illegal landfill sites in the Accra Metropolis.

The six include a huge site on the Mortuary Road, behind the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC)

[contextly_sidebar id=”tQBPDul1absD6WwhqKdVjsoHGrxmONaA”]Other landfill sites within the Glefe, Okponglo, Adedenkpo, Tunga and Mallam Market areas have also been closed down.

Currently, the Accra Metropolis has no permanent landfill site, a situation which has forced some residents to create their own dump sites.

The Director of the AMA’s Waste Management Department, Anthony Mensah, said the creation of new transfer sites for the city’s waste paved way for the closure.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Mensah said, “we have a mini-transfer station located at Kokomlemle. That one has been operational for the last two years so that is an option. We also have a mini transfer station located at Mallam right behind the Mallam Interchange. Then there is a third transfer station which was commissioned about a month and a half ago at Achimota so these three facilities are available for use,” he added.

The AMA also says plans are underway to construct another site at a convenient location for rubbish collectors.

We don’t need landfill sites – Frimpong-Boateng

The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng had earlier said there was no need for Ghana to have landfill sites to keep waste which is often burnt, instead of being recycled.

He noted that waste could be considered as raw materials needed to produce either energy, compost or something else.

Thus Ghana needed to get to the level of a country like Sweden, where they want to import waste from other countries so that they can process, the Minister said.
