The proposed launch of the 2017/2018 Ghana Premier League season has been called off after a court injunction from Accra Great Olympics was served the GFA, hours to the program.

The event was to commemorate the upcoming season and would have seen a new logo unveiled for the league.

However, patrons and invited stakeholders who had waited for more than an hour were left disappointed after PLB spokesperson, Tamimu Issah, emerged to announce that the program has been called off pending further communication.

Earlier on Monday, Great Olympics served the GFA with an injunction to stop the commencement of the Ghana Premier League.

Olympics say that the FA needs to resolve the matter of Bechem United’s use of an unqualified player in their league clash with Hearts last season.

It seems the resolution of the case holds the key to the start of the new Ghana Premier League season.

Great Olympics and Tema Youth failed to stay up in the Ghana Premier League and will have to deal with life in Division One next season after they both lost on final day.

Great Olympics needed to beat Bechem United in Bechem but that did not happen as Ahmed Toure scored for the home side after two minutes.

That was how the match ended to push Bechem United to 12th place on 41 points while Olympics stayed in 15th place with 37 points.

Tema Youth lost 2-0 to Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park thanks to goals from Seth Larbi Appiah. Chelsea ended the season in 8th place on 42 points while Tema Youth finished 14th on 37 points.

Asante Kotoko fell out of the top four places after suffering they were beaten 2-1 by Liberty Professionals in Dansoman.

Baba Mahama placed Kotoko in the lead in the first half but goals from Samuel Sarfo and Samuel Annan gave Liberty three points and 11th place in the final standings with 41 points.

AshGold were successful in their bid to stay up in the league after defeating newly-crowned champions, Aduana Stars, 4-2 at the Len Clay Stadium.

Hans Kwofie scored for the Miners in the 28th, 39th, 47th and 62nd minutes while Derrick Sasraku and Elvis Opoku got the goals for Aduana Stars.

Kwofie’s quadruple ensured that he finished top of the scorer’s chart with 17 goals; two more than Berekum Chelsea’s Stephen Sarfo.

Elmina Sharks were 2-0 winners over Wa All Stars with the goals coming from Felix Addo and Eric Osei. The result gave Sharks 42 points and 9th place in their debut season in the Ghana Premier League.

Wa All Stars finished 6th on 42 points.

Joseph Esso was on the score sheet for Ebusua Dwarfs as they beat Bolga All Stars 4-1 in Tamale.

He was the team’s most outstanding player in their last three matches and he got his goal in the 37th minute to add to two strikes from Stephen Bentil.

Ato Mensah scored the fourth for Dwarfs while Latif Abubakar got the consolation for Bolga All Stars.

Dwarfs finished the season in 4th place with 43 points at the expense of Asante Kotoko.

Persons believed to be fans of  Bechem United prevented a StarTimes TV crew from entering the team’s stadium ahead of the final day of games in the Ghana Premier League.

Bechem United face Accra Great Olympics with both teams facing the possibility of being relegated from the top flight.

Ahead of Sunday’s  final games, Olympics lie 15th in the table, one point behind Tema Youth in the 14th and a further point off their hosts who are just above the relegation zone.

A win today for Bechem would guarantee their survival while Olympics would need other results to go their way to stand a chance of staying up.

With so much at stake, reports of match-fixing that have characterised crunch league fixtures in the past have re-emerged heading into the weekend.

The game was scheduled to be broadcast live on television, however, those plans might have been scuppered by the fans’ actions.

The entrance to the stadium was blocked off by a truck that had been driven in front of it while some fans can be heard in videos screaming at the TV crew to “go to Kumasi” instead.

GTV Sports Plus also reported that “the TV Director for the Match was prevented from attending the Pre-Match meeting and was escorted out of the premises by two gentlemen believed to be Bechem United Fans.”

The crew have since filed a report at the Bechem Police station.

It’s unclear why the fans have taken this action and whether this will affect this game and all the others which are supposed to kick-off at the same time

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Accra Great Olympics, H.E. Amarkai Amarteifio, has issued a rallying call to all those in the Great Olympics family for unity and focus for the rest of the Ghana Premier League season.

The “Dade Boys” have endured a season of mixed emotions that has kept them in the relegation zone and it is threatening to send them down to the Division One just a year after getting promotion.

They are currently 15th on the Premier League table after getting 6 wins, 8 draws and recording 10 losses in their 24 matches played so far.

With 6 games left in the season, the Board Chairman of the club is urging fans, the playing body, the technical team and everyone of the Olympics fold to pool their strengths together and save the club.

“I want to make a rallying call to the Olympics family. United we stand, divided we fall. We have faced some problems recently and I am asking all members of the Olympics family to put all these problems behind us so that we can come together as a united family.

We need to stay in the Premiership because that is where we belong. All stakeholders should come together and work as a team,” he said in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports on Monday.

Olympics’ season has been greatly scarred by incidents surrounding the appointment of Tom Strand and the reaction of Godwin Attram, a former player and coach, to the situation.

Attram stated his disapproval for the decision and vowed not to work with the Swede despite being offered the role of assistant head coach.

The team’s board chairman, Amarkai Amarteifio, addressed the situation in his statement and called for the relationship between Attram and the club to be mended.

“I extend a hand of welcome to Mr. Godwin Attram, our favourite son, to forget about any differences he may have with any member of the family and join us to fight for a common cause. The technical team and players need to give their maximum so that we remain in the league.”

When the league resumes, Olympics will face Hearts of Oak, WAFA, Bolga All Stars, Elmina Sharks, AshGold and Bechem United in their last six matches of the season.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) yesterday faulted President John Mahama for failing to inform the House about new ministerial appointments instead of choosing to make them public in the media.

They described the conduct of the President as unacceptable and a mark of bad governance.

The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, shared similar views and described the criticisms as legitimate.

He was of the view that the President was under an obligation to inform Parliament about his new ministerial appointments.

The issue was brought to the fore by the MP for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, who questioned the actions of the President.

Background

The President has, in the past two weeks, announced ministerial reshuffles.

By law, he is supposed to inform Parliament about such appointments, even if he decides to concurrently put the appointments in the media.

However, he has failed to inform Parliament about the new nominations and, according to the MPs, they got to know of the new appointments in the media.

Owusu-Ankomah’s views

Papa Owusu-Ankomah described the conduct of the President as unacceptable.

“When he fails to put Parliament in the know, then the inference is that he doesn’t consider the role of Parliament in respect of appointments to be urgent. So Parliament should never be stampeded into approving or considering the President’s nominations.

“It is not a mark of good governance for this practice to continue. After all, if the President has considered it worthy to nominate people in the media, contemporaneously he could just write to the Speaker,” he said.

The Sekondi MP said the management of the President’s office was “problematic”.

Mr Adjaho agrees

The Speaker agreed with the sentiments expressed by Papa Owusu-Ankomah.

“The sentiments expressed on the floor of this House on this matter are very legitimate and I share the sentiments expressed by the member,” the Speaker said, adding that “policies, as much as possible, must be announced on the floor of this House”.

“We must know which ministers we are dealing with at any particular time,” he added.

The Majority Leader, Dr Benjamin Bewa-Nyog Kunbuor, in a reaction, sought to calm members and promised to draw the President’s attention to the anomaly.
