A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has described as a ‘cock and bull story’ the explanation by the Ministry of Information on the discharge of some members of pro-NPP vigilante group, Delta Forces on Wednesday.

The members of the group were standing trial for forcibly entering a court room in Kumasi and freeing some of their members who were in lawful custody.

But they were discharged by the court, presided over by Her Honour, Patricia Amponsah was forced to discharge the accused persons and dismissed the case of the Delta Force members after the prosecutor said she had instructions from the Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo, to drop charges against the accused because they had insufficient evidence against them.

The Ministry for Information in a sharp contrast said in a statement that the Principal State Attorney in the case took the decision to drop charges on his own accord without consulting his superiors.

According to the ministry, the government is investigating the matter and will deal with persons whose actions in the matter “bring the work and commitment of the department into disrepute.”

It also assured that it will take the necessary measures to remedy the situation in the interest of the Republic.

But Mr. Amaliba believes the Principal State Attorney took the decision upon the instruction of the Attorney General.

He told Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu that, “The statement emanating from the Ministry of Information for me, is a cock and bull story. That point is that, the Attorney General’s rep in Kumasi will not take a decision of such a matter which is of national interest without recourse to his bosses in Accra. Even if that was the case, that the reps unilaterally took that decision, the buck still stops with the Attorney General here in Accra.”

“I think that it is a damage control mechanism that the ministry of information is coming out with,” he added.

The “monster” in the Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Otiko Djaba, is “eating up”the New Patriotic Party (NPP), private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has said.

Mr. Amaliba believes the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failure to rebuke Otiko Djaba for criticizing former President Mahama during the elections, created what he calls a “monster”in the Minister, which is now affecting the party.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0rSv62gRdv4ETd2Y13PzTARqDR5ggsdr”]“When she attacked President Mahama and the Minority asked her to retract she refused, and the NPP hailed her as a brave woman. When you create a monster to eat up your opponents after the monster has eaten up your opponents, it will turn to you.”

On the same platform, Mr. Casley Hayford also criticized both the Minister and the Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, over the fracas, saying they could have chosen a more dignified approach to resolving their issues.

Casley Hayford believes the development clearly shows the two are “undisciplined.”

“This issue between Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba for me is the most distasteful thing that you can have in our social discourse. I cannot understand why two such prominent politicians who should be respected for what they do should go about saying such things about each other in public. These are a pair of undisciplined persons. This is like a Montie three thing. You should respect each other enough to call each other and sort this out.”

Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba have been bickering in the past few days, exchanging abusive words on various media platforms in what many have described as a serious blot on the government’s image.

Otiko Afisa Djaba in a media engagement last week, accused the NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, of receiving goats and cows from individuals with the promise of securing appointments in public office for them.

Mr. Naabu in a subsequent media interview caused a stir when he reportedly suggested that Otiko Djaba and the current Upper East Regional Chairman, were involved in the murder of the former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

Anti-corruption campaigner, Martin Alamisi Amidu, should have been put in the witness box to proof why he thinks President John Mahama was behind government’s discontinuance of an oral examination of Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the man behind the controversial GHc51 million judgment.

A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, said this in an interview with Citi News.

“This is the same allegation that Martin Amidu could not substantiate. I was of the view that Martin Amidu should have been kept in the witness box for him to prove this allegation that the President had authorized the Attorney General not to cross examine Woyome, that for me could have been a perfect situation but he was left of the hock,” he said.

Mr. Amaliba made the comment in response to claims by Mr. Amidu that the President was intimidating him ahead of his oral examination of Woyome.

Mr. Amidu was last week granted permission by the Supreme Court to examine the businessman after the Attorney General (AG) discontinued the case to quiz Mr. Woyome on the judgment debt saga despite serving an earlier notice.

The anti-corruption campaigner, who is also a former Attorney General, had prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling accused the president of personally directing the AG to discontinue the case.

In his latest outburst, he has also accused President John Mahama of intimidating him ahead of the oral examination.

“The conduct of the President convinces me as a senior and foundation member of the governing NDC, that he would do everything in his power to ensure that the examination orally on oath of the lootee for whom his Government looted the public purse, may not come on 24th November 2016,” he said in his latest epistle.

But Amaliba argued that,Mr. Amidu is going on that tangent in a bid to pitch Ghanaians against the President ahead of the elections.

“For me, I think that it is much ado about nothing, it is about his crusade to get the President Mahama removed from office. And he made that clear last week when he said that the only way we could get this money back is to vote President Mahama out, and in furtherance of that, he is throwing in all manner of things and thinking that the people will consume it; but the people are discerning.”

Court strikes out Martin Amidu’s ‘false claim’ against Mahama

The Supreme Court in its ruling also dismissed Amidu’s claim that President Mahama personally ordered the discontinuation of the application by the Attorney General to examine Woyome.

Background

Alfred Woyome was paid ¢51 million after he claimed that he helped Ghana to raise funds to construct stadia for purposes of hosting the CAN 2008 Nations Cup.

However an Auditor General’s report released in 2010, said the amount was paid illegally to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) financier.

The Supreme Court in 2014 ordered Mr. Woyome to pay back ¢51 million fraudulently taken from the state, after Mr. Martin Amidu, a former Attorney General challenged the legality of the judgment debt paid the businessman, Waterville, and Isofoton.

Following delays in retrieving the money, the Supreme Court judges unanimously granted the Attorney-General clearance to execute the court’s judgment ordering Mr. Woyome to refund the cash to the state.

Woyome prevents officials from valuing residence

Mr. Woyome in April 2016 prevented officials of the Attorney General’s Department and the Lands Commission from having access to his Kpehe residence for valuation.

The move was part of a directive from the Supreme Court to retrieve monies illegally paid to him.

But Woyome resisted the move, saying the planned valuation was illegal. Mr. Woyome had earlier won the criminal prosecution that sought to imprison him for the offence.
