It seems the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma Central constituency, Halidu Haruna, is not known by most of the people in the area.

This was revealed in a survey conducted by Citi FM which shows that, the incumbent NDC Member of Parliament, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, who is no longer in the parliamentary race is better known on the ground.

A total of 120 respondents were sampled for the survey released on Tuesday.

“Out of number, 62 percent said they knew the name of at least one of the parliamentary candidates for the constituency. Of the 62 respondents who were confident that they could name at least one of the 2016 parliamentary candidates for the Ablekuma Central constituency, 50.7 percent named the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), while 49.3 percent named the NPP candidate, Eben Nartey,” report from the survey added.

The report also noted that, 38 percent of the respondents said they did not know the name of at least one of the 2016 parliamentary candidates for the constituency.

“50 percent reported that, they did not know because they were either not interested in the parliamentary elections, did not pay attention to information on the parliamentary candidates, or they had forgotten the names of the candidates. 21. 6 percent also said it was unnecessary to know their names since they would vote for whoever represented their preferred political party. And 13.1 percent indicated that, they could not name the 2016 parliamentary candidates because the candidates were not as popular as the presidential candidates,” the report added.

Tetteh Chaie entered Parliament for the first time after the 2008 elections, and was re-elected in 2012, but was defeated by Halidu Haruna during the party’s parliamentary primaries.

Halidu Haruna is facing stiff competition for the NPP’s Eben Nartey.

Bellwether survey

The survey which was replicated in three other constituencies in the Greater Accra Region that have since 1996 voted voted for the winning party suggests that the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo  is likely to win in three of the four constituencies, with one going for President John Dramani Mahama.

The survey which sampled 480 respondents from the four constituencies,  showed that a larger percentage of voters in Ledzokuku, Krowor, Ablekuma Central preferred the NPP candidate while incumbent President Mahama led in Klottey Korle.
