The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, formerly known as the Kumasi Sports Stadium in the Ashanti Region, was developed into a multi-purpose stadium for use during the 2008 African Cup of Nations which Ghana hosted.

It is currently Ghana’s largest stadium with a seating capacity of 40,528. However, its current state is one of a terribly maintained facility that lacks the capacity to be described as a standard sporting facility.

When Citi News’ Hafiz Tijani visited the stadium, the hitherto green pitch had become pale brown.

Many of the seats in the spectators’ stand were broken, with the ability to cause injury to unsuspecting sports patrons.

Most corners within the stands have become grounds for the dumping of refuse.

That was not the only cause of the repugnant smell within the stands, but the many plastic water bottles that have been filled with urine and dumped there, were also to blame.

The washroom was a terrible sight to behold.

Apart from the foul smell, water barely flowed through the pipes as the sinks appeared to be badly stained due to long neglect and no proper cleaning.

About the stadium

The stadium was originally built by the United African Company (UAC) in 1957, and inaugurated as a designated football pitch in 1959.

Its stands were constructed in 1971 before the entire stadium was rebuilt in 1977.

In 2004 under President John Agyekum Kufuor, it was renamed after Kumasi-born footballer, Baba Yara.

The last major work on the facility was in 2008 ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the CAN 2008 tournament.

Citi News had early on reported on the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, a multi-purpose sports facility for the national teams, which is now engulfed in filth, and has become an abode for reptiles including snakes.

Instead of grooming the next generation of sportsmen and women, the facility now has become a condemned piece of architecture good for refuse and reptiles.

More than 15 health facilities including referral hospitals worth $1 bn are currently not operating.

While some of the facilities have been completed yet not in use, others have stalled for many years with no immediate sign work on them will resume soon.

Among the projects is the $217 million University of Ghana Medica Center, an ultra-modern teaching hospital that is not operating due to a tussle over the management of the facility between the University and the Ministry of Heath.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Saturday inspected the abandoned 1,000-bed maternity & paediatric block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as part of his visit to the Ashanti Region.

The project has been neglected for the past 37 years after it started in 1974.

The construction firm, which is handling the project, Cymain Construction Limited, assured President Akufo-Addo that it could complete the project in two years with the requisite funding.

The architectural consultant for the project, Betsy Owusu-Antwi, told the President $75million was needed to complete the project.

According to her, $40 million of the amount will be for purchasing medical equipment, with the remaining $25 million needed for civil works on the project.

“We are hoping that if these monies are made available, we can finish roughly in two years,” the consultant said to the President.

The Chief Executive Office of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr. Joseph Akpaloo, also appealed to the President to help see to the completion of the project to address the hospital’s congestion issues.

“We just want the block to be finished as early as possible. For us, our cries are for the patients to have space and be comfortable, and for the workers to also feel free and to work from their hearts,” Dr. Akpaloo said.

In the meantime, an Israeli firm, Mitrelli Group of companies, has expressed interest in completing the abandoned project.

The Mitrelli group is currently in Ghana looking into the possibility of landing the legal contract to work on the project.
