The family of a 67-year-old woman lynched for allegedly being a witch, is appealing to the state for compensation to cater for her children.

The deceased, Yenboka Kenna, who was lynched in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region about a fortnight ago, left behind three children.

But the family has said it will be difficult supporting the children without government intervention.

[contextly_sidebar id=”lFicNKQ5LZ6aokMt9FRIR28T5JbSzuht”]Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson of the family, Emmanuel Seluk, said the future of the children could be jeopardized without any support.

“…We think that the government can still go ahead and take care of the children of the deceased because the woman left behind three children and they have to be catered for. We are saying that supporting the three children would be very nice and good,” he added.

63 suspects rounded up over lynching

The Bolgatanga Police Command has already rounded up 63 suspects in connection with the lynching.

The 63 were picked up in a swoop on Saturday at Pelungu and Tindongo communities, and are currently in the custody of the police.

Emmanuel Seluk also noted that, the swoop  has caused many to abandon their homes.

“The atmosphere in the area is very bad. Today is a market day which comes off every three days; but as I speak to you now, when you get into the town, you won’t notice it is a market day. Most of the residents have moved to Bolga, Tongo and Zuarungu; and others have also moved to the hillsides.”

He said “even some of the children have been unable to go to school,”adding that “yesterday [Sunday], some people had to sleep without food because they learnt police are coming to arrest more of them. A lot of people there don’t sleep in their homes especially the youth.”
