Elisabeth Moss’s stylist has revealed there was a hidden message “to the patriarchy” in the actress’s Emmy Awards outfit.

Moss won best actress in a drama series for The Handmaid’s Tale on Sunday.

But what no-one noticed was the message written on the bottom of her shoes.

Stylist Karla Welch posted a photo of one shoe with “Off” written on the sole. “You’ll have to guess what the other shoe says.” she wrote. “Our note to the patriarchy #teamresistance.”

Karla Welch Instagram post

That’s partly a reference to the dystopian drama for which Moss won her award, in which handmaids are slaves forced to bear children for powerful families.

They are given names combining “Of” with the first name of their male custodian – so the name of Moss’s character is Offred.

But most people have assumed the other shoe may have borne a word to send a message to a real-world patriarchy in Hollywood and beyond.

Speaking after her win, she said it was important for stories to be led by and made by women.

“It’s my bread and butter, it’s what I’m most interested in as a woman, shows that are about women,” she said.

Moss also said there’s “still a lot of work to be done”, adding: “There are still meetings you walk into and you wonder if they say ‘no’ because it’s a show or film led by a woman.”

Moss paired the customised Olgana Paris heels with a pale pink Prabal Gurung gown.

She also used the awards ceremony to send a more overt message to two women – firstly her mother, whom she credited in her acceptance speech with being “brave and strong and smart”.

Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley and author Margaret AtwoodMoss called author Margaret Atwood (right) “a champion, a heroine, a rebel, and a fighter”

Then the actress posted a message to author Margaret Atwood, whose 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale was adapted for TV.

Moss wrote: “She has provided a voice to so many who could not use their own, she has given us her heart and soul as readers, she has asked us to wake up and not only look around but to act and resist.

“She is a champion, a heroine, a rebel, and a fighter for freedom and equality.”

Meanwhile, hot on those heels, it was reported that Moss has signed to star in a film about an underground suburban network of women who provided safe abortions in the 1960s.

The actress will play a married Chicago woman who becomes pregnant in Call Jane, based on the true story of a 1960s movement called the Jane Collective, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 3,700-year-old burial chamber of a pharaoh’s daughter is believed to have been found near the remains of a recently-discovered pyramid in Egypt.

The ministry of antiquities said the chamber at the Dahshur royal necropolis, south of Cairo, contained a wooden box engraved with hieroglyphs.

Inside the box were four canopic jars filled with the organs of the deceased, likely a daughter of King Emnikamaw.

The ruler’s pyramid is about 600m (1,970ft) from the chamber.

Last month, archaeologists investigating the remains of the structure found a relief with 10 lines of hieroglyphs bearing Emnikamaw’s name.

They also uncovered the remnants of an anthropoid sarcophagus.

Dahshur is where King Sneferu of the 4th Dynasty built ancient Egypt’s first true smooth-sided pyramid, the 104m-high (341ft) Red Pyramid, about 4,600 years ago.

He also constructed an earlier version, the 105m-high Bent Pyramid, whose slopes change angle from 54 degrees to 43 degrees about halfway up.

Sneferu was succeeded by his son Khufu, renowned for the Great Pyramid at Giza, which – at 138m high – was a wonder of the ancient world.

Exclusive Events Ghana, organizers of the Miss Ghana Pageant, has launched a collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Ghana; 60 Years on Planning Committee to host 2016’s beauty pageant.

Speaking at the launch, Vice Chairperson of the planning committee, Abu Jinapor, said government is ready to support the pageant dubbed: Miss Ghana@60, The Diamond Jubilee,  by making the pageant an official celebration in connection with the country’s 60 years anniversary.

This, he said, is because of the various developmental projects undertaken by the beauty queens over the years which have been beneficial to the country.

Miss Ghana @ 60 has also been officially endorsed by President Nana Akufo-Addo as a platform that can be used to sell the Ghanaian brand, and called on cooperate bodies and private individuals to help raise funds to support the event.

“The President has officially endorsed this year’s pageant and has had the opportunity to meet the organizers. But to organize these kinds of events, we need funding and indeed the organizers of this event are even looking ahead of themselves and have couched a vision of hosting Miss World in our republic, right here in Accra, and we can all imagine the economic benefit to the country. So I have the duty to implore the private sector to chip into the coffers of the organizers of this year’s event,” Mr Jinapor said.

On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of Exclusive Events Ghana, Inna Mariam Patty, expressed her appreciation to the Ministry and the Committee for partnering to commemorate the event’s 60th anniversary.

“We cannot thank you enough because you have prioritized the belief we have in empowering the next generation despite time constraints, inadequate resources and economic restraints. However our journey has just begun and we shall be knocking on your door so we start the next hundred years together. The role of women in society keeps evolving. There is therefore the need for a platform to showcase the emerging and challenging roles of women today.”

Speaking for the Ministry, the sector Minister, Catherine Afeku, also reiterated the government’s support for this year’s pageant, and congratulated the efforts of past beauty queens in solving some social issues.

The oldest beauty pageant in the country, the Miss Ghana pageant, was started by Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1957, as an initiative to offer the Ghanaian woman a platform to positively impact society.

Google’s European boss has apologised after adverts from major firms and government agencies appeared next to extremist content on its YouTube site.

It came after Marks and Spencer became the latest firm to pull its online ads over the issue, joining others such as Audi, RBS and L’Oreal.

Google’s European chief, Matthew Brittin, promised to review the firm’s policies and strengthen enforcement.

But some questioned the company’s commitment to tackling the issue.

A recent investigation by the Times found adverts from a range of well-known firms and organisations had appeared alongside content from supporters of extremist groups on YouTube’s video site.

An advert appearing alongside a video earns the poster about £6 for every 1,000 clicks it generates, meaning brands may have unwittingly contributed money to extremists.

The Times said that rape apologists, anti-Semites and hate preachers were among those receiving payouts.

Analysis: Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC technology correspondent

There are two difficult issues for Google here – spotting videos that are illegal and should be removed from YouTube, and determining which are legal but not suitable for advertising.

Pressed by reporters on whether the firm would employ people to actively hunt down extremist videos, Matt Brittin was evasive, indicating that a combination of smart technology and user alerts to harmful content was a better option.

But his main challenge will be in providing more clarity to customers when it comes to deciding which videos are “ad-safe”.

Drawing the line won’t be easy – as he pointed out, news organisations put a lot of disturbing content online but need to earn money from advertising if they are to continue to invest in journalism.

Mr Brittin seems confident that by having a thorough look at its policies and showing advertisers how they can control where their messages appear, Google can regain their confidence.

But the company, which insists it’s a technology platform not a media business, is finding it ever harder to hold that line.

Media firms face tight regulation – and that is what may be coming Google’s way if it doesn’t clean up its act.Royal Navy ship

Last week, ministers summoned Google for talks at the Cabinet Office after imposing a temporary restriction on the government’s own adverts, including for military recruitment and blood donation campaigns.

And on Monday M&S joined a growing list of firms to suspend their advertising from both Google’s search engine and YouTube site. Others include McDonald’s, HSBC, Lloyds, the BBC, Channel 4 and the Guardian.

‘Not far enough’

Speaking at the Advertising Week Europe conference, Mr Brittin said: “I would like to apologise to our partners and advertisers who might have been affected by their ads appearing on controversial content.”

He also promised that Google would exert more control over where ads were placed and improve its record for reviewing questionable content. Further details are expected later this week.

However, Labour MP Yvette Cooper told the Guardian the apology had not gone far enough.

“They need to say whether they will be paying back any of that advertising revenue and to answer our questions on what more they are doing to root out extremism or illegal activity on YouTube because they are still failing to do enough to remove illegal or hate-filled content from YouTube.”

Brian Wieser, an analyst at the brokerage Pivotal, meanwhile downgraded Google’s stock on Monday, saying the scandal would curtail its profits this year.

“Alphabet’s Google is facing a serious issue in the UK with brand safety issues, which has global repercussions,” he wrote in an analyst note.

Mark Mulligan, a media and technology consultant at Midia, told the BBC that the complaints against Google “were not new” and showed the internet was “still in its adolescence”.

“When the internet was founded, it was all about doing away with the gatekeeper. But now we’re facing fake news and inappropriate content and that clashes with business models like Google’s which are built on selling advertising.”

He said Google was likely to weather the storm, but that such incidents would weaken its dominance of the online advertising market.

“Every incident like this gives Facebook an opportunity to steal a march on Google,” he said.

A man believed to be in his early 30s was found bare-chested on a Monday morning hanging dead on a neem tree at the Ashaiman irrigation development site.

Residents in the area who spoke to Citi News, said the man was found hanging on the tree Monday morning when some of them woke up to attend to nature’s call in a nearby bush.

[contextly_sidebar id=”UntQxiLpwstO03VPHwZ05tNLpBmCaErB”]According to the residents, the man is unknown in the area. They could thus not tell where he came from, or what might have prompted him to take his life.

The Assembly member for the Nii Doku Electoral Area, Yusif Gariba, noted that “it was around 6:00am that I was called by one of the watchdog committee members in the area that a young man believed in his thirties has allegedly committed suicide on a neem tree at the Jericho Agric park.”

“So I rushed in quickly to see things for myself and indeed it was true. When I got there, I tried getting some of the area guys to identify the person but unfortunately, none of them could identify the face so I suspect he is not from the area, but rather he just came to commit the act here”

The Assembly member added that, he would lodge a formal complaint at the Lebanon police station at Ashaiman., for the body to be conveyed to the Tema General Hospital mortuary.

There have been a series of reported suicides in recent times, with many raising concerns about the need to pay attention to pay attention to mental health issues and depression.[contextly_sidebar id=”y19UCjsMbLIukT0OkX5X9DUnrl7IqyWH”]

Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star, Didier Drogba, paid a surprise visit to Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House today [Friday], February 10, 2017.

President Akufo-Addo posted a photo of himself and the two-time African Footballer of the Year at the Flagstaff House on Facebook on Friday evening, but did not explain what the purpose of the visit was.

Nana Addo, who speaks very fluent french, is believed to have held private discussions with the football legend.

Drogba was capped 104 times Ivory Coast between 2002 and 2014, scoring 65 goals, and is the nation’s all-time top goalscorer with 65 goals.

Much like the Black Stars in 2016, he led the Ivory Coast to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance in the tournament.

He was part of the Ivory Coast teams that reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006 and 2012, only to beaten on penalties on both occasions.

In Europe, Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 appearances for Chelsea in his first spell at the club, winning the UEFA Champions League with the London club in 2012.

He returned to the club for a year in 2014 and scored seven goals in 40 games.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in nominating his Policy Adviser for the 2016 election campaign, Boakye-Agyarko, for the Minister of Energy, asked him to ensure that the power crisis, which was christened ‘dumsor’, becomes a thing of the past.

President Akufo-Addo also indicated that, the Ministry of Power and Petroleum will now fall under the Ministry of Energy, and will be headed by Mr. Agyarko, pending parliamentary approval.

[contextly_sidebar id=”UMHHM6DwQRQnW6B1VBh5yGnimAx4wXBZ”]The Power Ministry was created in 2014 in a bid to resolve Ghana’s power crisis, which slowed economic growth and frustrated citizens with frequent power cuts and scheduled load-shedding popularly referred to as ‘dumsor’.

In a charge to Minister designate for Energy, President Akufo-Addo said the power crisis “has to be a thing of the past. We must find a way to be able to have a reliable supply of energy for our industries and enterprises and affordable for our consumers.”

“Essentially what he has to do is to assure the Ghanaian people that dumsor is going to be a thing permanently of the past and that its head will not rear up again especially in Akufo-Addo’s time as President,” the President stated.

President Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence in Mr. Agyarko’s ability to fulfill his mandate, saying, “he is in a position to provide the leadership of this important sector of our national economy.”

Boakye Agyarko’s nomination was part of 12 other nominees by President Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House Tuesday. The 2nd and final ministerial appointments are expected on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Islamist terrorism is the biggest challenge facing Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel has said in her New Year message.

Referring to the deadly truck attack in Berlin by a Tunisian asylum seeker, she said it was “sickening” when acts of terror were carried out by people who had sought protection.

She said 2016 had been a year of “severe tests”.

But she also said she was confident Germany could overcome them.

“As we go about our lives and our work, we are saying to the terrorists: ‘You are hate-filled murderers, but you do not determine how we live and want to live. We are free, considerate and open’,” Mrs Merkel said.

Twelve people were killed when Anis Amri drove a truck at crowds at a Berlin Christmas market two weeks ago.

Earlier in the year, a teenage Afghan refugee wounded five people in an axe attack on a train in Wuerzburg and a Syrian whose asylum application had been refused blew himself up outside a bar in Ansbach, wounding 15 other people.

The attacks have led to some criticism of Mrs Merkel’s policy of admitting more than a million refugees and migrants last year.

But in her New Year message the chancellor said images of the devastation in the Syrian city of Aleppo, where Syrian government forces have forced out rebels after months of fighting, showed how “important and right” it was for Germany to take in those fleeing the conflict.

“All this is reflected in our democracy, rule of law and values. They are the opposite of the hate-filled world of terrorism and will prove stronger than it. Together we are stronger. Our state is stronger,” she said.

Mrs Merkel also denounced “distortions” that were leading people to believe that the EU and even parliamentary democracy were no longer working.

The EU was “slow and difficult”, had suffered a blow with the United Kingdom’s vote to leave and should focus on the things it “really can do better than the nation state”, she said.

“But no – we Germans should never be deceived into thinking that a happy future could ever lie in going it alone nationally,” she added.

Mrs Merkel is seeking a fourth term as chancellor in an election expected in September and has already said that she expects her toughest campaign yet.

The seventeen High Court judges who have been assigned to handle anticipated electoral disputes that may arise before the December 7, presidential and parliamentary elections are expected to hear cases on a day-to-day basis.

“By virtue of the powers conferred on her by order 79 of the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2004 (C.I 47), the Lady Chief Justice has also directed that the judges hear these election related cases on a day-to-day basis including weekends, but excluding public holidays from 9.00am to 6:00pm, until the cases are finally disposed of,” a statement signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Alex B. Poku-Acheampong said.

The Chief Justice has also directed that the hearing of all electoral cases should take precedence over all other cases pending before the courts.

The Judges are expected to further submit weekly status reports on all such cases pending before them.

“This authorization and directive from the Hon. Lady Chief Justice takes effect from Tuesday October 18, 2016 until otherwise varied or cancelled,” the statement added.

CJ designates 17 courts to handle electoral disputes

The directive comes barely a day after the Chief Justice designated 17 specialised courts to deal with electoral disputes that may arise before the general polls.

The appointed justices, according to Justice Poku-Acheampong, have been tasked to handle the cases expeditiously.

He gave the breakdown of the judges assigned as follows: Greater Accra, six; Ashanti and Western, two each, while Eastern, Central, Upper West, Upper East, Northern, Volta and Brong Ahafo have been assigned a judge each.

There are concerns that the electoral calendar could be negatively affected following the rising number of disputes between presidential aspirants and the Electoral Commission (EC), but the Judicial Secretary has allayed such fears, saying there is no cause for alarm.
