Manchester United beat Huddersfield to narrow the gap on rivals Manchester City to 13 points after the Premier League leaders were held to a draw by Burnley.

Romelu Lukaku put the hosts in front before Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal for the Red Devils, converting the rebound after his initial penalty was saved, and the visitors fell into the drop zone with a fourth straight defeat.

Earlier, Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored a late equaliser for Burnley as City failed to win for just the fourth time this season.

Danilo scored a superb, curling opener for Pep Guardiola’s side but the visitors failed to take their chances, with Raheem Sterling missing an open goal inside the six-yard box.

In the late match at the Emirates Stadium, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a debut goal and Aaron Ramsey netted his first hat-trick to give Arsenal a thrilling 5-1 victory over Everton.

Fellow January signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan also picked up a hat-trick of assists.

At the other end of the table, Southampton moved out of the relegation zone after holding on to beat bottom side West Brom 3-2 at The Hawthorns.

Ahmed Hegazi put the hosts ahead, only for Saints to score twice in three minutes before the break through Mario Lemina’s superb strike and Jack Stephens’ flick at the back post.

James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick made it 3-1 to the visitors and, although Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back, Alan Pardew’s side failed to level.

Swansea are just above the bottom three after a 1-1 draw with Leicester, with Federico Fernandez’s header cancelling out Jamie Vardy’s opener.

Elsewhere, Brighton moved up to 13th and level on points with opponents West Ham after a comfortable 3-1 victory. Javier Hernandez levelled after Glenn Murray’s opener but Jose Izquierdo scored a sublime second and Pascal Gross drilled in a third from 20 yards.

And Bournemouth came from a goal down to beat Stoke – Joshua King and Lys Mousset scoring for the Cherries after Xherdan Shaqiri put the visitors in front on five minutes.

In the Championship, Cardiff maintained their promotion push with a comprehensive 4-1 win at Leeds.

The Bluebirds remain fourth, two points behind Aston Villa, who secured their sixth successive win with a 3-2 victory over bottom side Burton.

Man City 4-0 Bournemouth:

Manchester City smashed Bournemouth to continue their record-breaking run with their 17th straight victory in the Premier League.

Sergio Aguero took his tally of Etihad Stadium goals past 100 with a double, as the top flight leaders swept past the Cherries.

Raheem Sterling also claimed his 16th goal of the season and Danilo his first for the club late on, as Pep Guardiola’s side took their 2017 tally to 101 goals.

City were not at their sparkling best but still had far too much for Bournemouth, who have now lost back-to-back games 4-0 after last week’s thrashing by Liverpool and are without a win in seven.

Another win moves Man City 14 points clear at the top of the table at the halfway stage of the season.

West Ham 2-3 Newcastle:

Newcastle came from behind and managed to hold on in a nervy finale to beat West Ham in a five-goal thriller at the London Stadium.

Marko Arnautovic continued his great run of form with the Hammers’ opening goal inside just six minutes, the former capitalising on a dreadful back-pass from  Henri Saivet.

But Saivet redeemed himself with a wonderful free-kick to pull the Magpies level just four minutes later, and David Moyes’ men then found themselves behind when Mohamed Diame netted early in the second-half.

Newcastle then went 3-1 up when Christian Atsu finished off a neat counter-attacking move, and made the most of some woeful West Ham defending.

Andre Ayew, who had earlier missed a penalty, found the net in the 69th minute to give West Ham hope, but Rafa Benitez’s side managed to hold on to claim a vital three points.

Victory lifts Newcastle to 15th, two points clear of the bottom-three, with West Ham slipping to 17th and just a point off the relegation zone.

Brighton 1-0 Watford:

The hopeless Hornets suffered their fifth defeat in six games as Pascal Gross’s second-half strike earned Brighton a home victory.

It was a vital win for the Seagulls, who ended their seven-game winless streak with a deserved three points.

Albion had not found the net from open play for more than ten-and-a-half hours when German midfielder Gross cut on to his right foot and let fly with a 64th-minute drive which flew under Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

The well-earned win was much needed for Seagulls manager Chris Hughton, ending a run of three points from a possible 27 while inflicting a fourth successive loss on the Hornets and putting a little more pressure on their boss Marco Silva.

Southampton 1-1 Huddersfield:

Charlie Austin could face a suspension after his challenge on Jonas Lossl left the Danish goalkeeper with a blood-soaked face as Southampton drew 1-1 with Huddersfield at St Mary’s.

Austin fired Saints into the lead but later avoided sanction despite catching Huddersfield keeper Lossl in the nose in a bad-tempered south coast affair.

The striker could face retrospective punishment from the Football Association for his actions, with a three-match ban a possibility, while Lossl managed to play on undeterred after lengthy treatment.

Austin’s fifth strike in five starts was cancelled out by Laurent Depoitre’s third goal in as many games however, as the Terriers fought back for a share of the spoils.

Saints frontman Austin later hobbled off with a leg issue as injury cut short his mixed afternoon.

The draw left Southampton with just one win in 10 Premier League encounters, maintaining pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Stoke City 3-1 West Brom:

The pressure on Stoke manager Mark Hughes eased a little following a 3-1 home victory against West Brom.

Five defeats in the previous six Premier League matches had dragged Stoke towards the relegation battle, but Hughes said in the build-up to the game he did not feel defeat here would spell the end of his four and a half years in charge.

Chairman Peter Coates, however, described Saturday’s fixture against the second-from-bottom club as “one we need to win.”

It looked like Stoke would comfortably oblige after first-half goals from Joe Allen and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting put them firmly in control but West Brom rallied at the start of the second half and Salomon Rondon halved their deficit.

However, the Baggies were unable to get anything from the game and Alan Pardew is still looking for his first victory since taking over as manager five matches ago.

More worryingly, his group of players are without a Premier League win for 17 matches.

Swansea 1-1 Crystal Palace:

Leon Britton’s first game as Swansea caretaker manager ended in a 1-1 home draw against Crystal Palace.

Swansea had put club stalwart Britton in temporary charge after sacking Paul Clement on Wednesday, and there was a familiar feel about proceedings when Luka Milivojevic put Palace ahead on the hour.

But substitute Jordan Ayew rescued a point 13 minutes from time with a thunderous 20-yard drive – his second goal of the season, with his previous Premier League strike coming against Palace at Selhurst Park in August.

Britton – half the age of Palace boss Roy Hodgson – oversaw a vastly improved display from a Swansea side who had scored only 10 goals in 18 games under Clement this season.

But Swansea will still spend Christmas bottom of the league as they seek to make a swift managerial appointment.

Burnley 1-0 Watford

Scott Arfield stepped out of the shadows to become Burnley’s latest match-winner as the Clarets continued their eye-catching Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Watford.

Billed as a battle of wits between Sean Dyche and Marco Silva, two over-performing coaches who were heavily linked with the Everton job recently, it was the former who enhanced his growing reputation.

Marvin Zeegelaar’s 39th-minute red card for a studs-up challenge on Steven Defour played its part but it was Arfield, granted a first start since October 21 only because of Robbie Brady’s injury, who provided the decisive finish on the stroke of half-time.

Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes both saw efforts ruled out for offside as Watford stayed in the game, though two weak penalty appeals were as close as they came to nicking a point.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Bournemouth

Christian Benteke missed the opportunity to earn Crystal Palace a priceless win when he missed a stoppage time penalty in their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.

Jermain Defoe gave Bournemouth an early lead following a well worked corner before Luka Milivojević equalised from the spot.

Scott Dann turned the game on its head but Defoe’s sublime lob brought the visitors level just before the break.

Roy Hodgson’s side missed a host of chances before being awarded a penalty but Benteke fluffed his lines at the crucial moment.

Huddersfield 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Steve Mounie fired a first-half double as Huddersfield bounced back to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Brighton 2-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Club record signing Mounie, back in the starting line-up after recently returning to full fitness following injury, grabbed his first goal since the opening day early on and headed his second just before half-time to help the Terriers halt a four-game losing run.

Victory lifts David Wagner’s side above Brighton in the table and extends the south-coast club’s winless league run to five matches.

Tottenham 5-1 Stoke City

Tottenham got back to winning ways with a commanding win at home to Stoke.

Ryan Shawcross’ own goal broke the deadlock before Son Heung-Min doubled Spurs’ lead just after the break.

Harry Kane scored two goals before Christian Eriksen made it 5-0.

Shawcross scored at the correct end this time with simple header ten minutes from time in a game Spurs dominated.

Swansea City 1-0 West Brom

Swansea climbed off the bottom of the Premier League as Wilfried Bony’s late winner eased the pressure on head coach Paul Clement.

The Swansea boss had insisted before West Brom’s visit that his future did not rest on the outcome of this game.

But Clement’s joy on the touchline was unconfined when Bony smashed home nine minutes from time in a crowded goalmouth to secure a 1-0 win

West Ham won for the first time under David Moyes as Marko Arnautovic’s first goal for the club proved enough to beat a disjointed Chelsea at London Stadium.

The Hammers scored the only goal after just six minutes when Arnautovic curled a deft strike into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Manuel Lanzini on the edge of the area.

Chelsea responded well before the break but were repelled by an organised West Ham defence and two solid saves from Adrian, retaining his spot in place of the dropped Joe Hart.

Both sides became increasingly ragged in the second half but West Ham desperately held on, with Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata firing wide when clean through late on.

Despite victory, the hosts remain in the bottom three, though they have drawn level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, who face fellow strugglers Swansea at 15:00 GMT.

Defeat means champions Chelsea will finish the weekend 14 points behind leaders Manchester City if Pep Guardiola’s side beat rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth said “things have to change quickly” at the club after their poor run continued with a 4-1 defeat at Southampton.

Saints striker Charlie Austin scored two second-half headers on his first league start of the season as the Toffees capitulated after half-time.

They have now won only once in seven games under Unsworth.

“It’s killing me,” said the 44-year-old former Everton defender, who urged the board to quickly appoint a permanent manager.

“I take responsibility, but we all have to as well. We’re in a tough place and things have to change quickly.”

Unsworth said the performance at St Mary’s was “not acceptable” and the team need to “get back to basics”.

He added: “Confidence is as low as it has ever been. The club has to decide and the sooner that happens the better. The players need this resolving.

“What I see is a happy squad but I’d rather have an unhappy squad that’s winning. I want what’s best for the club and I hope the players do too.”

Dusan Tadic gave the hosts an early lead but Everton’s record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled just before the break.

After Austin’s double, Steven Davis scored from the edge of the box to wrap up victory for the Saints, who had previously scored only six league goals at home this season.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men produced a vibrant attacking display that should lift the pressure on the Argentine after his side failed to muster a shot on target in the 3-0 defeat by Liverpool.

With Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares offering a constant threat down the flanks, and Austin intent on making his mark, the Saints could have scored more.

Austin hit the post after 11 minutes following tenacious work out wide from Soares, and defender Virgil van Dijk headed wide on 40 minutes following James Ward-Prowse’s corner.

Capitulation follows capitulation for Everton

Phil Jagielka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the final whistle.

Everton are now winless in 15 Premier League away games and remain two points above the bottom three

This defeat came just three days after a 5-1 loss to Atalanta in the Europa League, and ex-Everton striker Gary Lineker described the club as “a shambles” as they collapsed at St Mary’s.

The Toffees seem rudderless on and off the pitch, and former defender Unsworth has been unable to add any stability since Ronald Koeman was sacked in October.

Everton have now conceded 28 goals in the Premier League this season – their worst tally after 13 games since 1958-59.

Their only win under Unsworth came on 5 November against Watford, whose manager Marco Silva has been a target for the Toffees.

But, with the Portuguese seemingly now off the agenda, it is difficult to work out if the club had a plan for life after Koeman.

A worrying lack of clarity over their manager search is echoed on the pitch, where capitulation follows capitulation and the players’ body language looks increasingly forlorn.

Something has to give and fast – because they are playing like a side with very real prospects of going down.

Alexis Sanchez converted a stoppage-time penalty as Arsenal snatched all three points in a 1-0 win at Burnley.

Clarets defender James Tarkowski was penalised for his shove on Aaron Ramsey in the 91st minute and Sanchez made no mistake from the spot to clinch the Gunners just their second league win on the road this season.

It was cruel on Burnley. Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny struck a controversial winner in time added on in the corresponding fixture last season and Sanchez’s late spot-kick sank Sean Dyche’s side at the Emirates in January this year.

The Clarets began with the confidence expected of a side chasing a fourth straight top-flight win for the first time since 1968, and Robbie Brady’s excellent 10th-minute cross only just eluded the diving Ashley Barnes.

Burnley went even closer to taking a first-half lead when Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s shot was pushed on to a post by Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Arsenal served warning of their threat as Ramsey fired over following Alexandre Lacazette’s whipped ball in from the left. A flurry of corners from dead-ball specialist Brady put Arsenal under more pressure, but the visitors responded again through Nacho Monreal’s thumping low drive.

The Gunners, without a poorly Mesut Ozil, but otherwise fielding the same side which beat Tottenham in their previous league match, were predictably hustled out of their comfort zone.

Tarkowski’s timely block denied Sanchez a shooting chance as Arsenal got a foothold in the game around the half-hour mark and Monreal curled another effort over the crossbar.

Brady’s curling free-kick from 22 yards shortly before the interval was destined for the top corner, but lacked the zip to really test Cech, who comfortably pushed it away for a corner.

Burnley skipper Ben Mee bravely blocked Sead Kolasinac’s attempted shot and thwarted the Bosnian again soon after as Arsenal began the second half with more purpose.

Gudmundsson’s stinging low drive was saved by Cech, but the Gunners enjoyed a lot more of the ball and probed in Burnley’s half.

Lacazette’s effort was deflected wide and Ramsey lashed a shot over after Sanchez’s lofted pass into the area before Jack Wilshere made his third league appearance of the season when replacing the ineffectual Alex Iwobi in the 67th minute.

The home side were next to threaten, with Jeff Hendrick setting Stephen Ward free down the left and his low cross was fired straight at Koscielny by Brady.

Chris Wood was sent on for Steven Defour and Danny Welbeck replaced Lacazette with 11 minutes left and the game hanging in the balance.

By now roles were reversed from the first half. Arsenal hogged possession and Burnley waited for the counter, while Wilshere fired wide from the edge of the area and Mee put in another crucial block on Ramsey’s snap-shot.

But just when it appeared Burnley had taken another point off one of the Premier League’s top six – they won at Chelsea on the opening day and have drawn against Liverpool and Tottenham – Tarkowski’s push was spotted by referee Lee Mason and Sanchez condemned them to their third league defeat of the season.

Manager David Moyes felt West Ham’s crowd played a big part as the Hammers came from behind to earn a point against Leicester in his first home game in charge.

Marc Albrighton fired the Foxes ahead after Angelo Ogbonna failed to deal with Jamie Vardy’s low cross.

Vardy went close to doubling the lead with a curling attempt before Kouyate got on the end of Manuel Lanzini’s corner.

West Ham, roared on by the home fans, were the better side after the interval but could not force a second goal.

They remain in the relegation zone but are now level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, while Leicester move above Newcastle United into 11th.

‘A tough place to come with a tough crowd’

Moyes described the point as “a start” and said of the Hammers fans: “They got right behind the players and the players gave them something back.”

He added: “The fans were fantastic, after all the negatives we heard, it was the opposite.

“When you come to play West Ham over the years, it has been a tough place to come with a tough crowd and they did that tonight.”

Leicester have taken five points in Claude Puel’s first four league games in charge yet the Foxes boss believes it should be more.

“The only disappointment is that we didn’t win,” said the Frenchman.

“We play well with the ball on the floor, press our opponents well and create chances to score. Now we must start to be more clinical.

“It’s disappointing because we had a lot of opportunities in the first half and we should have killed the game.”

Hammers respond well to going behind

This was a spirited performance from the Hammers which will give Moyes hope of steering the struggling club out of the bottom three.

In the 2-0 defeat at Watford in his first game in charge, West Ham’s heads dropped after conceding in the 11th minute.

Yet there was a determination about the hosts after the Premier League’s worst defence conceded for the 26th time in the league this season.

Winston Reid’s failure to close Jamie Vardy down allowed the England striker to cross. Angelo Ogbonna should have cleared yet lost his footing to allow Albrighton to slide home.

Marc Albrighton scores for Leicester against West Ham
Marc Albrighton scored his first Premier League goal since 6 May

Kouyate headed the first Hammers goal of the Moyes reign from Lanzini’s corner, which lifted the atmosphere inside London Stadium.

West Ham fans spent the second half urging their team forward, substitute Andre Ayew going closest to a second with an overhead kick in stoppage time.

Ayew’s eventful cameo

Although he went close to scoring the winner in the dying moments, Ayew was involved in two controversial incidents after replacing the impressive Marko Arnautovic.

The former Swansea winger appeared to dive to try and win his side a penalty when challenged by Harry Maguire on the edge of the Leicester penalty area.

Referee Martin Atkinson waved play on, although Ayew was booked moments later after a late challenge on Demarai Gray, who was also cautioned for reacting and shoving his opponent.

Arsenal beat down claims of a north London power shift as goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez sealed a brilliant 2-0 win over rivals Tottenham.

Spurs have been hailed as the dominant force in this fiercest of rivalries of late, but the Gunners proved they are still a force to be reckoned with.

Arsenal grabbed both of their goals in an entertaining first-half, which also saw Harry Kane force a save from Petr Cech and Christian Eriksen hit the post for the visitors.

But overall, Spurs just weren’t at the races as the hosts controlled the game, with Mesut Ozil particularly impressive as Arsenal claimed their first north London derby victory in seven attempts.

However, headlines will surely be dominated by the performance of referee Mike Dean, whose decision-making was called into question for both of Arsenal’s goals.

Spurs were raging when Davinson Sanchez was adjudged to have fouled namesake Alexis, when it appeared to be a brilliantly-timed challenge. The resulting free-kick was whipped into the box by Ozil and Mustafi was there to loop a fine header beyond the reach of Hugo Loris and into the net.

The Gunners doubled their lead just five minutes later, as Chilean Sanchez lashed in from close-range following Alexandre Lacazette’s cutback, although replays suggested Lacazette may have been marginally offside when played through on the right flank.

But few could argue with the result as Arsene Wenger’s side beat Tottenham at their own game, showing themselves faster, stronger and hungrier than their opponents in every department.

The three points moves Arsene Wenger’s side up to fifth in the table, just one point behind Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

If Arsenal could produce this sort of ruthless performance more consistently, they would surely be title contenders.

Harry Kane wore a bandage around his right knee but he and Dele Alli, who both pulled out of England duty last week, were deemed fit enough to start although Harry Winks dropped to the bench.  Lloris shook off a groin strain and Danny Rose was a curious omission from the squad.

For Arsenal, Lacazette was handed a starting spot up front but Jack Wilshere and Alex Iwobi were only among the substitutes.

Arsenal were all over Spurs from the outset, with Eric Dier’s pass out under pressure falling straight to Sanchez but Lacazette fired over.

It was a warning of what was to come and while a mix-up between Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny allowed Kane a rare sight of goal, Arsenal were soon pulverising their opponents with wave after wave of attack.

Ben Davies seemed a particular target, with several openings coming down Tottenham’s left, as Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil both fired dangerous balls across the box.

It was no more comfortable for Davinson Sanchez on the opposite flank as he was harried into playing a limp back-pass to Lloris, who just scrambled away ahead of the chasing Lacazette.

Christian Eriksen, virtually anonymous until this point, clipped the post with a dragged shot but it was no surprise when Mustafi headed Arsenal in front in the 36th minute.

Arsenal were fortunate to win the free-kick for the slightest of shirt-pulls from Davinson Sanchez on Alexis Sanchez before Mustafi climbed above the rooted Jan Vertonghen to head in at the far post.

Tottenham were rattled but five minutes later they were two down. Lacazette nipped in between Vertonghen and Davies, squared to Sanchez, who bundled in at the near post.

Lacazette’s arm looked on replay to have just been offside and Spurs assistant Jesus Perez waited to give Dean an earful in the tunnel at half-time.

The visitors could hardly argue with the scoreline, however, although they came out with renewed impetus after the break. Kane wanted a penalty for Sead Kolasinac cutting across him and seconds later drew a last-ditch block from Mustafi.

But while Arsenal dropped deeper, content to allow their opponents more possession, Tottenham struggled to find a breakthrough.

Wenger’s decision to take off Lacazette was greeted by boos. However Pochettino hauling off both Kane and Alli prompted celebrations from the home support.

Dier’s header drew an acrobatic save from Petr Cech and substitute Son Heung-min could have created a nervy finish if he had done better with two half-volleys late on.

As it was, Arsenal played out a surprisingly comfortable victory.

Everton have sacked manager Ronald Koeman after Sunday’s 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal left them in the Premier League relegation zone.

A statement said the club “would like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the club over the past 16 months”.

The Toffees are 18th in the Premier League and have won just two of their nine league games this season.

“I still believe I can change the whole situation,” Koeman had said on Sunday.

Koeman became the third Premier League managerial casualty of the season after Frank de Boer left Crystal Palace and Craig Shakespeare was sacked by Leicester.

The 54-year-old Dutchman, who guided Everton to seventh place in his first season in charge last term, paid the price for a poor start to this season despite having spent £140m in the summer.

Harry Kane scored twice against Liverpool as Tottenham hammered their Premier League rivals 4-1 at Wembley.

It was a game to forget for Dejan Lovren, who made mistakes in the build-up to Spurs’ first two goals and he was hauled off after just 31 minutes.

He was not the only one guilty of kamikaze defending, though, with Simon Mignolet and Joel Matip both major contributors to Spurs’ goal flurry.

Kane and Son Heung-min took full advantage with an early double before Mohamed Salah pulled one back for Liverpool. Dele Alli and Kane, however, struck either side of half-time to put the result beyond doubt.

It is the third time in nine Premier League games Liverpool have now conceded three goals or more and this thrashing against a fellow top-four rival showed why only the most unlikely of transformations could see them challenge for the title this season.

Defeat leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side ninth, 12 points behind Manchester City already, while Tottenham cut the gap to five after moving level on 20 points with Manchester United.

For Spurs, this was also a statement win at Wembley, perhaps their best here since adopting their new home, and in front of a Premier League record crowd of 80,827. The attendance topped the 76,098 that watched Manchester United beat Blackburn 4-1 at Old Trafford in March 2007.

The only blip on Mauricio Pochettino’s afternoon came in the 87th minute as Kane had to be substituted. The striker went off holding his hamstring.

Liverpool were chasing a third consecutive clean sheet but any suggestion their problems at the back have eased were extinguished in the first 12 minutes.

salah-goal

Trippier caused chaos with a speculative chip forward as Lovren was caught out of position, Mignolet rushed out but failed to intercept, and Kane simply steered the ball away from the goalkeeper. He cushioned into an empty net for his 16th goal in 13 games.

It was a dreadful goal to concede but the next eight minutes later was worse. Hugo Lloris caught James Milner’s cross and tossed the ball downfield. Lovren missed the header, allowing Kane to sprint free and square to Son, who duly slotted home.

Tottenham should have made it three. Son was involved again, latching onto a straight ball between Lovren and Matip – but his half-volley this time crashed against the crossbar.

A frenetic opening half an hour, however, took another unexpected turn as Liverpool pulled a goal back.

Kane was unfortunate not be awarded a foul after being kicked in the leg but one pass from Jordan Henderson freed the lightning-quick Salah. The Egyptian outpaced Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier before scuffing past Lloris.

Son and Kane were still nipping in behind Liverpool’s back-line almost at will and Lovren paid the price by coming off. If injury was the cause it was not obvious.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced him and Joe Gomez pushed inside to centre-half, with Emre Can dropping into right-back.

There was still time for one more individual error just before half-time, however, as Matip nodded Eriksen’s free-kick straight to Alli and the midfielder volleyed in for his first league goal since August.

Liverpool started the second half a bit brighter but it was not long before their defensive frailties were exposed again.

This time Mignolet was at fault as he flapped at Trippier’s cross and while Vertonghen’s effort was cleared off the line by Roberto Firmino, Kane was on hand to slam in the rebound.

klopp

Liverpool pushed for a consolation and Lloris made two excellent saves to push a curling Philippe Coutinho shot onto the post and deny Salah a second with his legs.

Kane hobbled off late on but showed little discomfort when he re-entered the pitch to congratulate his team-mates after full-time.
