Policy think tank, IMANI Center for Policy and Education, has scored the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) 52.9% for partially fulfilling promises it made in its 2012 manifesto.

“The NDC for the past four years from our analysis had a final score of 52.9% and on our scale that is a fair performance,” Director of Technology at IMANI, Brian Dzansi, said at the launch of the report on Thursday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”mTT8iOyTw408UwYhcBOPwcHTd60tbiLr”]The latest report featured an assessment of the 2012 manifesto of the NDC dubbed ‘Advancing the Better Ghana Agenda’.

The aim of IMANI’s assessment was to evaluate the rate of execution of the programmes, policies and projects stated in the manifesto.

Brian Dzansi explained that, they collated all the 500 promises in the NDC’s 2012 manifesto, and collected data on them.

After going through the process, Dzansi said “we then did our analysis and we did the scoring and we went to validate this with the ministries, departments and agencies, and this is our final score.”

Mahama needs $24billion to fulfill 75% promises

President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the NDC, who is seeking a second term in office, launched the party’s manifesto last month, prior to the upcoming general elections.

According to IMANI, he would need close to $24 billion in order to fulfill more than half of the new promises in the manifesto.

The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has been taunting the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asking the leadership to just rehash its 2012 manifesto and present it to Ghanaians.

Barely three months to the December 7 general elections the NPP is yet to present its manifesto to Ghanaian.

According Mr. Nketia the NPP delayed the release of its manifesto because it does not have clear and achievable ideas to present to Ghanaians.

“…So they [NPP] can present their 2012 manifesto if they don’t have a new manifesto so that Ghanaians will assess them based on what they can offer. After all, they couldn’t be in power so they did not have that opportunity to implement that 2012 manifesto.

Although the NPP has announced it will launch the manifesto on October 9, 2016, the NDC General Secretary said the long delay obviously means the party is just bereft of ideas.

“If they actually believe in what is contained in it [2012 manifesto] they can still recycle it and present it and we don’t have any problem with them,” he on Thursday while addressing party supporters when he accompanied the Vice President,  Kwesi Amissah-Arthur to submit President Mahama’s nomination forms to the Electoral Commission.

NPP manifesto launch moved to Trade Fair

The NPP which had delayed the manifesto launch following claims that the NDC would copy their ideas moved from the launch of the document from Tamale to Accra.

The party said the launch will now be held at the Trade Fair Center in Accra on October 9.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has called on political parties to stop their game of promises, and rather focus on addressing issues that matter to the people in their campaigning.

The two leading parties in the country; the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been making many promises on the campaign trail.

The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo has so far promised to set up one factory in each of the 216 districts, and also to construct an irrigation dam in each village up north, if elected into government.

On the part of the NDC, it flagbearer, President John Mahama has promised to give each pupil a tablet, and also to establish farming mechanization centers with 10 tractors in each district if re-elected.

But, Executive Director of GII, Linda Ofori-Kwarfo urged the parties to promise doable initiatives since Ghanaians have become very discerning.

“Ghanaian voters are not people you can take for granted, we are enlightened and we want you to convince us with your promises, visions and not all those big gargantuan promises that every Ghanaian knows that cannot be accomplished.”

She further admonished the political parties to focus their attention on the issues that matter to Ghanaian electorates and shun the promises which in most cases are unrealistic.

“They should stop the blame game; I can see the political parties blaming each other. I think they are now in the business of I’m promising more than you so we should stop those things and convince the citizenry to vote for them based on their vision, based on what is doable and stop the promises, we are tired,” she added.
