{"id":95817,"date":"2015-03-02T17:32:32","date_gmt":"2015-03-02T17:32:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=95817"},"modified":"2015-03-02T17:32:32","modified_gmt":"2015-03-02T17:32:32","slug":"suit-against-agric-ministry-over-gm-foods-set-for-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=95817","title":{"rendered":"Court case against Agric Ministry over GM foods set for Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The case involving a civil society group, Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is set for Tuesday, March 3, 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;UrzFqQzB3HX4RNCMDjgDCrz5qdBc4Xob&#8221;]<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/10\/group-sues-agric-ministry-gmos\/#sthash.9Yv2POw5.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>FSG \u00a0is seeking an injunction<\/strong><\/a><\/span> from the court to prevent the national biosafety committee, established under the Biosafety Act from commercializing the sale of Genetically Modified (GM) foods in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They claim the Ministry does not have the authority to commercialize such products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The group in a statement said, \u201cOur case is very simple. According to Section 13 of the Biosafety Act, 2011, Act 831\u2026only the National Biosafety Authority has such a power to authorize the commercial release of GM foods in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The case which was first heard on the February 17 was adjourned to the March 3, to enable the defendants put in their statement of case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>War against GM foods in Ghana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Various stakeholders have been waging\u00a0 a national war against <strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/03\/04\/group-to-demonstrate-on-march-6-against-gmo\/#sthash.bale9HZy.tQKY\" target=\"_blank\">attempts by government to approve<\/a><\/span><\/strong> the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They believe GMOs will undermine and damage the traditional farming practices and serve as unnecessary threat to public health, water resources, air and the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Godwin Allotey Akweiteh\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The case involving a civil society group, Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is set for Tuesday, March 3, 2015.
