{"id":93826,"date":"2015-02-23T11:12:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T11:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=93826"},"modified":"2015-02-24T15:13:56","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T15:13:56","slug":"govt-adopts-measures-to-reduce-nations-debt-stock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=93826","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t adopts measures to reduce nation\u2019s debt stock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Finance Minister, Seth Tekper says government has put in place measures to prevent the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/19\/ghana-debt-hits-67-1-percent-of-gdp\/#sthash.aSVEQpRt.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>country\u2019s debt<\/strong><\/a><\/span> from rising further.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghana\u2019s debt hit 67.1 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at by end of last year, 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) about a week ago warned that the country\u2019s debt will <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/10\/90193\/#sthash.vtvg9tsq.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>rise to about 70 percent of GDP<\/strong><\/a><\/span> by 2016 if measures are not put in place to check government\u2019s excessive borrowing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Responding to the issue on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>, Seth Tekper acknowledged the IEA\u2019s concerns, but assured that government has adopted a smart borrowing concept to check the debt situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUnlike the past statistics IEA is saying\u2026 we are putting a sinking fund in place from our oil revenue instead of consuming everything today and continue to take loan,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further added that government is also ensuring that that \u201cwhen we borrow for commercial project, the project should pay for the loan and we should not put it on the public debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is a policy approved by cabinet and parliament and we are saying there is a precedence.
