{"id":93510,"date":"2015-02-21T19:03:14","date_gmt":"2015-02-21T19:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=93510"},"modified":"2015-02-21T19:03:14","modified_gmt":"2015-02-21T19:03:14","slug":"unregulated-sale-of-farmlands-to-cause-severe-famine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=93510","title":{"rendered":"Unregulated sale of farmlands to cause severe famine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"itemIntroText\">\n<p>Ghanaians might experience severe famine if the sale of farmlands to\u00a0real estate developers\u00a0 goes unregulated, a Senior Policy Advisor of the USAID Agricultural Policy Support Project, Mr Kwaku Owusu-Baah has warned.<\/p>\n<p>He told the Graphic that the country faces danger as far as food production is concerned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FARMLANDS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93511\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/FARMLANDS.jpg\" alt=\"FARMLANDS\" width=\"500\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"itemFullText\">\n<p>&#8220;A few years ago, peri-urban farming provided enough vegetables to feed Accra, but today we import vegetables from Burkina Faso. It is a challenge we need to look at and deal with before it gets out of hand,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He therefore called on Parliament to take immediate steps to address the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>He made the appeal at a two-day training programming which gathered\u00a0participants from more than 20 media houses and agriculture-focused civil society organisations together.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of the country\u2019s dependency on its neighbours for food imports were on the wall during last year\u2019s Burkina Faso political crisis when some analysts warned of a potential food security crisis in Ghana, should the conflict escalate.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2009, Ghana\u2019s tomatoes imports from Burkina Faso stood at 180,000 tonnes.
