{"id":90889,"date":"2015-02-12T05:49:20","date_gmt":"2015-02-12T05:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=90889"},"modified":"2015-02-12T11:46:29","modified_gmt":"2015-02-12T11:46:29","slug":"district-assembly-elections-limbo-ec-finally-receives-writ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=90889","title":{"rendered":"District Assembly elections in limbo; EC finally receives writ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed receipt of the writ seeking to annul the organisation of the impending\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/12\/10\/district-assembly-elections-set-march-2015\/#sthash.APXEBEp2.pPNQLNeC.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>District Assembly elections slated for March 3.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;NgkNEfJiJsBmtKhGAxbKjayIncZ4QOYg&#8221;]There now doubts over elections following <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/09\/fisherman-sues-ec-district-assembly-elections\/#sthash.TlQxSLxD.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>a writ<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>filed by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, acting for and on behalf of one Benjamin Eyi Mensah, a fisherman from Winneba in the Central Region.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Eyi Mensah said he was denied an opportunity to file his nomination to contest the elections despite meeting all conditions to be registered as a candidate because the EC closed nomination before the maturation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 85.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mensah\u00a0wanted to contest as an Assemblyman for the Eyipeh Electoral Area within the Effutu District.<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier interview with<strong> Citi News,\u00a0<\/strong>Afenyo-Markin said all attempts to get the EC to include his client in the process\u00a0proved futile, hence the decision to go to court.<\/p>\n<p>He accused the Commission of breaching the constitution with their refusal to adhere to the rules governing the conduct of the elections.<\/p>\n<p>But the EC has insisted it followed due process.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mensah thus wants the court to \u201corder the Electoral Commission to re-open nominations to enable the Plaintiff and other law abiding citizens\u2026to file their nomination forms to participate in the upcoming District Assembly Elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Director of Communications at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry has told <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the writ has been forwarded to the lawyers of the Commission for the necessary action to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been served with the writ and the lawyers know the processes so they will handle the matter,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<br \/>\n<a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/osamidan\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @osamidan<\/a><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed receipt of the writ seeking to annul the organisation of the impending\u00a0District Assembly elections slated for March 3.
